He bestows good sense, spiritual wisdom and meditation,

ਜਨ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਮ੝ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥

Jan ḝĝs nĝm ḝẖi▫ĝvahi se▫e.
|Sagal paro▫ī apunai sūṯ.

ਰੂਪ੝ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੰਗ੝ ਕਿਛ੝ ਤ੝ਰਿਹ੝ ਗ੝ਣ ਤੇ ਪ੝ਰਭ ਭਿੰਨ ॥
Rūp na rekẖ na rang kicẖẖ ṯarihu guṇ ṯe parabẖ bẖinn.
He has no form, no shape, no color; God is beyond the three qualities.
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਬ੝ਝਾਝ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਸ੝ ਹੋਵੈ ਸ੝ਪ੝ਰਸੰਨ ॥੧॥
Ŧisėh bujẖĝ▫e nĝnkĝ jis hovai suparsan. ((1))
They alone understand Him, O Nanak, with whom He is pleased. ((1))
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥

Ashtapadee:
ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪ੝ਰਭ੝ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖ੝ ॥
Abẖinĝsī parabẖ man mėh rĝkẖ.
Keep the Immortal Lord God enshrined within your mind.
ਮਾਨ੝ਖ ਕੀ ਤੂ ਪ੝ਰੀਤਿ ਤਿਆਗ੝ ॥
Mĝnukẖ kī ṯū parīṯ ṯi▫ĝg.
Renounce your love and attachment to people.
ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਪਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛ੝ ਕੋਇ ॥
Ŧis ṯe parai nĝhī kicẖẖ ko▫e.
Beyond Him, there is nothing at all.
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਝਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥
Sarab niranṯar eko so▫e.
The One Lord is pervading among all.
ਆਪੇ ਬੀਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ॥
Āpe bīnĝ ĝpe ḝĝnĝ.
He Himself is All-seeing; He Himself is All-knowing,
ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ੝ ਗਹੀਰ੝ ਸ੝ਜਾਨਾ ॥
Gahir gambẖīr gahīr sujĝnĝ.
Unfathomable, Profound, Deep and All-knowing.
ਪਾਰਬ੝ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸ੝ਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥
Pĝrbarahm parmesur gobinḝ.
He is the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord, the Lord of the Universe,
ਕ੝ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਬਖਸੰਦ ॥
Kirpĝ niḝẖĝn ḝa▫i▫ĝl bakẖsanḝ.
the Treasure of mercy, compassion and forgiveness.
ਸਾਧ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਚਰਨੀ ਪਾਉ ॥
Sĝḝẖ ṯere kī cẖarnī pĝ▫o.
To fall at the Feet of Your Holy Beings -
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਇਹ੝ ਅਨਰਾਉ ॥੧॥
Nĝnak kai man ih anrĝ▫o. ((1))
this is the longing of Nanak's mind. ((1))
ਮਨਸਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਰਨਾ ਜੋਗ ॥
Mansĝ pūran sarnĝ jog.
He is the Fulfiller of wishes, who can give us Sanctuary;
ਜੋ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਹੋਗ੝ ॥
Jo kar pĝ▫i▫ĝ so▫ī hog.
that which He has written, comes to pass.
ਹਰਨ ਭਰਨ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨੇਤ੝ਰ ਫੋਰ੝ ॥
Haran bẖaran jĝ kĝ neṯar for.
He destroys and creates in the twinkling of an eye.
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮੰਤ੝ਰ੝ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਹੋਰ੝ ॥
Ŧis kĝ manṯar na jĝnai hor.
No one else knows the mystery of His ways.
ਅਨਦ ਰੂਪ ਮੰਗਲ ਸਦ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥
Anaḝ rūp mangal saḝ jĝ kai.
He is the embodiment of ecstasy and everlasting joy.
ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਸ੝ਨੀਅਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥
Sarab thok sunī▫ah gẖar ṯĝ kai.
I have heard that all things are in His home.
ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਜ੝ ਜੋਗ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ॥
Rĝj mėh rĝj jog mėh jogī.
Among kings, He is the King; among yogis, He is the Yogi.
ਤਪ ਮਹਿ ਤਪੀਸਰ੝ ਗ੝ਰਿਹਸਤ ਮਹਿ ਭੋਗੀ ॥
Ŧap mėh ṯapīsar garihsaṯ mėh bẖogī.
Among ascetics, He is the Ascetic; among householders, He is the Enjoyer.
ਧਿਆਇ ਧਿਆਇ ਭਗਤਹ ਸ੝ਖ੝ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Ḏẖi▫ĝ▫e ḝẖi▫ĝ▫e bẖagṯah sukẖ pĝ▫i▫ĝ.
By constant meditation, His devotee finds peace.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸ੝ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਕਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਅੰਤ੝ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
Nĝnak ṯis purakẖ kĝ kinai anṯ na pĝ▫i▫ĝ. ((2))
O Nanak, no one has found the limits of that Supreme Being. ((2))
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ਕੀ ਮਿਤਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Jĝ kī līlĝ kī miṯ nĝhi.
There is no limit to His play.
ਸਗਲ ਦੇਵ ਹਾਰੇ ਅਵਗਾਹਿ ॥
Sagal ḝev hĝre avgĝhi.
All the demigods have grown weary of searching for it.
ਪਿਤਾ ਕਾ ਜਨਮ੝ ਕਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਪੂਤ੝ ॥
Piṯĝ kĝ janam kė jĝnai pūṯ.
What does the son know of his father's birth?
ਸਗਲ ਪਰੋਈ ਅਪ੝ਨੈ ਸੂਤਿ ॥
Sagal paro▫ī apunai sūṯ.
All are strung upon His string.
ਸ੝ਮਤਿ ਗਿਆਨ੝ ਧਿਆਨ੝ ਜਿਨ ਦੇਇ ॥
Sumaṯ gi▫ĝn ḝẖi▫ĝn jin ḝe▫e.
He bestows good sense, spiritual wisdom and meditation,
ਜਨ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਮ੝ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥
Jan ḝĝs nĝm ḝẖi▫ĝvahi se▫e.
on His humble servants and slaves who meditate on the Naam.
ਤਿਹ੝ ਗ੝ਣ ਮਹਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਭਰਮਾਝ ॥
Ŧihu guṇ mėh jĝ ka▫o bẖarmĝ▫e.
He leads some astray in the three qualities;
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਝ ॥
Janam marai fir ĝvai jĝ▫e.
they are born and die, coming and going over and over again.
ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਅਸਥਾਨ ॥
Ūcẖ nīcẖ ṯis ke asthĝn.
The high and the low are His places.
ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਾਵੈ ਤੈਸਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਨ ॥੩॥
Jaisĝ janĝvai ṯaisĝ Nĝnak jĝn. ((3))
As He inspires us to know Him, O Nanak, so is He known. ((3))
ਨਾਨਾ ਰੂਪ ਨਾਨਾ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ॥
Nĝnĝ rūp nĝnĝ jĝ ke rang.
Many are His forms; many are His colors.
ਨਾਨਾ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਇਕ ਰੰਗ ॥
Nĝnĝ bẖekẖ karahi ik rang.
Many are the appearances which He assumes, and yet He is still the One.
ਨਾਨਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ੝ ॥
Nĝnĝ biḝẖ kīno bisthĝr.
In so many ways, He has extended Himself.
ਪ੝ਰਭ੝ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਝਕੰਕਾਰ੝ ॥
Parabẖ abẖinĝsī ekankĝr.
The Eternal Lord God is the One, the Creator.
ਨਾਨਾ ਚਲਿਤ ਕਰੇ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
Nĝnĝ cẖaliṯ kare kẖin mĝhi.
He performs His many plays in an instant.
ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਪੂਰਨ੝ ਸਭ ਠਾਇ ॥
Pūr rahi▫o pūran sabẖ ṯẖĝ▫e.
The Perfect Lord is pervading all places.
ਨਾਨਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਨਤ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
Nĝnĝ biḝẖ kar banaṯ banĝ▫ī.
In so many ways, He created the creation.
ਅਪਨੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਈ ॥
Apnī kīmaṯ ĝpe pĝ▫ī.
He alone can estimate His worth.
ਸਭ ਘਟ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਠਾਉ ॥
Sabẖ gẖat ṯis ke sabẖ ṯis ke ṯẖĝ▫o.
All hearts are His, and all places are His.
ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥
Jap jap jīvai Nĝnak har nĝ▫o. ((4))
Nanak lives by chanting, chanting the Name of the Lord. ((4))
ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਜੰਤ ॥
Nĝm ke ḝẖĝre sagle janṯ.
The Naam is the Support of all creatures.
ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਖੰਡ ਬ੝ਰਹਮੰਡ ॥
Nĝm ke ḝẖĝre kẖand barahmand.
The Naam is the Support of the earth and solar systems.
ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਸਿਮ੝ਰਿਤਿ ਬੇਦ ਪ੝ਰਾਨ ॥
Nĝm ke ḝẖĝre simriṯ beḝ purĝn.
The Naam is the Support of the Simritees, the Vedas and the Puraanas.
ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਸ੝ਨਨ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ॥
Nĝm ke ḝẖĝre sunan gi▫ĝn ḝẖi▫ĝn.
The Naam is the Support by which we hear of spiritual wisdom and meditation.
ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਆਗਾਸ ਪਾਤਾਲ ॥
Nĝm ke ḝẖĝre ĝgĝs pĝṯĝl.
The Naam is the Support of the Akaashic ethers and the nether regions.
ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਸਗਲ ਆਕਾਰ ॥
Nĝm ke ḝẖĝre sagal ĝkĝr.
The Naam is the Support of all bodies.
ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਪ੝ਰੀਆ ਸਭ ਭਵਨ ॥
Nĝm ke ḝẖĝre purī▫ĝ sabẖ bẖavan.
The Naam is the Support of all worlds and realms.
ਨਾਮ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਸ੝ਨਿ ਸ੝ਰਵਨ ॥
Nĝm kai sang uḝẖre sun sarvan.
Associating with the Naam, listening to it with the ears, one is saved.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸ੝ ਆਪਨੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਝ ॥
Kar kirpĝ jis ĝpnai nĝm lĝ▫e.
Those whom the Lord mercifully attaches to His Naam -
ਨਾਨਕ ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਮਹਿ ਸੋ ਜਨ੝ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਝ ॥੫॥
Nĝnak cẖa▫uthe paḝ mėh so jan gaṯ pĝ▫e. ((5))
O Nanak, in the fourth state, those humble servants attain salvation. ((5))
ਰੂਪ੝ ਸਤਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਸਤਿ ਅਸਥਾਨ੝ ॥
Rūp saṯ jĝ kĝ saṯ asthĝn.
His form is true, and true is His place.
ਪ੝ਰਖ੝ ਸਤਿ ਕੇਵਲ ਪਰਧਾਨ੝ ॥
Purakẖ saṯ keval parḝẖĝn.
His personality is true - He alone is supreme.
ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
Karṯūṯ saṯ saṯ jĝ kī baṇī.
His acts are true, and true is His Word.
ਸਤਿ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਸਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
Saṯ purakẖ sabẖ mĝhi samĝṇī.
The True Lord is permeating all.
ਸਤਿ ਕਰਮ੝ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਸਤਿ ॥
Saṯ karam jĝ kī racẖnĝ saṯ.
True are His actions; His creation is true.
ਮੂਲ੝ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਉਤਪਤਿ ॥
Mūl saṯ saṯ uṯpaṯ.
His root is true, and true is what originates from it.
ਸਤਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲੀ ॥
Saṯ karṇī nirmal nirmalī.
True is His lifestyle, the purest of the pure.
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਬ੝ਝਾਝ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਭ ਭਲੀ ॥
Jisahi bujẖĝ▫e ṯisėh sabẖ bẖalī.
All goes well for those who know Him.
ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮ੝ ਪ੝ਰਭ ਕਾ ਸ੝ਖਦਾਈ ॥
Saṯ nĝm parabẖ kĝ sukẖ▫ḝĝ▫ī.
The True Name of God is the Giver of peace.
ਬਿਸ੝ਵਾਸ੝ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗ੝ਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ॥੬॥
Bisvĝs saṯ Nĝnak gur ṯe pĝ▫ī. ((6))
Nanak has obtained true faith from the Guru. ((6))
ਸਤਿ ਬਚਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਉਪਦੇਸ ॥
Saṯ bacẖan sĝḝẖū upḝes.
True are the Teachings, and the Instructions of the Holy.
ਸਤਿ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਪ੝ਰਵੇਸ ॥
Saṯ ṯe jan jĝ kai riḝai parves.
True are those into whose hearts He enters.
ਸਤਿ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਇ ॥
Saṯ niraṯ būjẖai je ko▫e.
One who knows and loves the Truth -
ਨਾਮ੝ ਜਪਤ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
Nĝm japaṯ ṯĝ kī gaṯ ho▫e.
chanting the Naam, he obtains salvation.
ਆਪਿ ਸਤਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਭ੝ ਸਤਿ ॥
Āp saṯ kī▫ĝ sabẖ saṯ.
He Himself is True, and all that He has made is true.
ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਪਨੀ ਮਿਤਿ ਗਤਿ ॥
Āpe jĝnai apnī miṯ gaṯ.
He Himself knows His own state and condition.
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਸ੝ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸ੝ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰ੝ ॥
Jis kī sarisat so karṇaihĝr.
He is the Creator Lord of His world.
ਅਵਰ ਨ ਬੂਝਿ ਕਰਤ ਬੀਚਾਰ੝ ॥
Avar na būjẖ karaṯ bīcẖĝr.
No one else understands Him, although they may try.
ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀ ਮਿਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੀਆ ॥
Karṯe kī miṯ na jĝnai kī▫ĝ.
The created cannot know the extent of the Creator.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸ੝ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਵਰਤੀਆ ॥੭॥
Nĝnak jo ṯis bẖĝvai so varṯī▫ĝ. ((7))
O Nanak, whatever pleases Him comes to pass. ((7))
ਬਿਸਮਨ ਬਿਸਮ ਭਝ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ ॥
Bisman bisam bẖa▫e bismĝḝ.
Gazing upon His wondrous wonder, I am wonder-struck and amazed!
ਜਿਨਿ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਤਿਸ੝ ਆਇਆ ਸ੝ਵਾਦ ॥
Jin būjẖi▫ĝ ṯis ĝ▫i▫ĝ savĝḝ.
One who realizes this, comes to taste this state of joy.
ਪ੝ਰਭ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਚਿ ਜਨ ਰਹੇ ॥
Parabẖ kai rang rĝcẖ jan rahe.
God's humble servants remain absorbed in His Love.
ਗ੝ਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲਹੇ ॥
Gur kai bacẖan paḝĝrath lahe.
Following the Guru's Teachings, they receive the four cardinal blessings.
ਓਇ ਦਾਤੇ ਦ੝ਖ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰ ॥
O▫e ḝĝṯe ḝukẖ kĝtanhĝr.
They are the givers, the dispellers of pain.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥
Jĝ kai sang ṯarai sansĝr.
In their company, the world is saved.
ਜਨ ਕਾ ਸੇਵਕ੝ ਸੋ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
Jan kĝ sevak so vadbẖĝgī.
The slave of the Lord's servant is so very blessed.
ਜਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਝਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
Jan kai sang ek liv lĝgī.
In the company of His servant, one becomes attached to the Love of the One.
ਗ੝ਨ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਕੀਰਤਨ੝ ਜਨ੝ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
Gun gobiḝ kīrṯan jan gĝvai.
His humble servant sings the Kirtan, the songs of the glory of God.
ਗ੝ਰ ਪ੝ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਲ੝ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧੬॥
Gur parsĝḝ Nĝnak fal pĝvai. ((8)(16))
By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, he receives the fruits of his rewards. ((8)(16))
