| ਨੰਗਾ ਦੋਜਕਿ ਚਾਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਦਿਸੈ ਖਰਾ ਡਰਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| Nangĝ ḝojak cẖĝli▫ĝ ṯĝ ḝisai kẖarĝ darĝvaṇĝ. |
| He goes to hell naked, and he looks hideous then. |
| ਕਰਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਣਾ ॥੧੪॥ |
| Kar a▫ugaṇ pacẖẖoṯĝvaṇĝ. ॥14॥ |
| He regrets the sins he committed. ॥14॥ |

| Salok mėhlĝ 1. |
| Shalok, First Mehl: |
| ਦਇਆ ਕਪਾਹ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸੂਤ ਜਤ ਗੰਢੀ ਸਤ ਵਟ ॥ |
| Ḏa▫i▫ĝ kapĝh sanṯokẖ sūṯ jaṯ gandẖī saṯ vat. |
| Make compassion the cotton, contentment the thread, modesty the knot and truth the twist. |
| ਝਹ ਜਨੇਊ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਹਈ ਤ ਪਾਡੇ ਘਤ ॥ |
| Ėhu jane▫ū jī▫a kĝ ha▫ī ṯa pĝde gẖaṯ. |
| This is the sacred thread of the soul; if you have it, then go ahead and put it on me. |
| ਨਾ ਝਹ ਤਟੈ ਨ ਮਲ ਲਗੈ ਨਾ ਝਹ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
| Nĝ ehu ṯutai nĝ mal lagai nĝ ehu jalai na jĝ▫e. |
| It does not break, it cannot be soiled by filth, it cannot be burnt, or lost. |
| ਧੰਨ ਸ ਮਾਣਸ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੋ ਗਲਿ ਚਲੇ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| Ḏẖan so mĝṇas nĝnkĝ jo gal cẖale pĝ▫e. |
| Blessed are those mortal beings, O Nanak, who wear such a thread around their necks. |
| ਚਉਕੜਿ ਮਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਬਹਿ ਚਉਕੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ |
| Cẖa▫ukaṛ mul aṇĝ▫i▫ĝ bahi cẖa▫ukai pĝ▫i▫ĝ. |
| You buy the thread for a few shells, and seated in your enclosure, you put it on. |
| ਸਿਖਾ ਕੰਨਿ ਚੜਾਈਆ ਗਰ ਬਰਾਹਮਣ ਥਿਆ ॥ |
| Sikẖĝ kann cẖaṛĝ▫ī▫ĝ gur barĝhmaṇ thi▫ĝ. |
| Whispering instructions into others' ears, the Brahmin becomes a guru. |
| ਓਹ ਮਆ ਓਹ ਝੜਿ ਪਇਆ ਵੇਤਗਾ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥ |
| Oh mu▫ĝ oh jẖaṛ pa▫i▫ĝ veṯgĝ ga▫i▫ĝ. ॥1॥ |
| But he dies, and the sacred thread falls away, and the soul departs without it. ॥1॥ |

| First Mehl: |
| ਲਖ ਚੋਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਜਾਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਲਖ ਗਾਲਿ ॥ |
| Lakẖ cẖorī▫ĝ lakẖ jĝrī▫ĝ lakẖ kūṛī▫ĝ lakẖ gĝl. |
| He commits thousands of robberies, thousands of acts of adultery, thousands of falsehoods and thousands of abuses. |
| ਲਖ ਠਗੀਆ ਪਹਿਨਾਮੀਆ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ |
| Lakẖ ṯẖagī▫ĝ pahinĝmī▫ĝ rĝṯ ḝinas jī▫a nĝl. |
| He practices thousands of deceptions and secret deeds, night and day, against his fellow beings. |
| ਤਗ ਕਪਾਹਹ ਕਤੀਝ ਬਾਮਹਹਣ ਵਟੇ ਆਇ ॥ |
| Ŧag kapĝhahu kaṯī▫ai bĝmĥaṇ vate ĝ▫e. |
| The thread is spun from cotton, and the Brahmin comes and twists it. |
| ਕਹਿ ਬਕਰਾ ਰਿੰਨਹਹਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ |
| Kuhi bakrĝ rinniĥ kẖĝ▫i▫ĝ sabẖ ko ĝkẖai pĝ▫e. |
| The goat is killed, cooked and eaten, and everyone then says, "Put on the sacred thread". |
| ਹੋਇ ਪਰਾਣਾ ਸਟੀਝ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਝ ਹੋਰ ॥ |
| Ho▫e purĝṇĝ sutī▫ai bẖī fir pĝ▫ī▫ai hor. |
| When it wears out, it is thrown away, and another one is put on. |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਤਗ ਨ ਤਟਈ ਜੇ ਤਗਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਰ ॥੨॥ |
| Nĝnak ṯag na ṯut▫ī je ṯag hovai jor. ॥2॥ |
| O Nanak, the thread would not break, if it had any real strength. ॥2॥ |

| Mėhlĝ 1. |
| First Mehl: |
| ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਝ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚ ਸੂਤ ॥ |
| Nĝ▫e mani▫ai paṯ ūpjai sĝlĝhī sacẖ sūṯ. |
| Believing in the Name, honor is obtained. The Lord's Praise is the true sacred thread. |
| ਦਰਗਹ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਈਝ ਤਗ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਪੂਤ ॥੩॥ |
| Ḏargėh anḝar pĝ▫ī▫ai ṯag na ṯūtas pūṯ. ॥3॥ |
| Such a sacred thread is worn in the Court of the Lord; it shall never break. ॥3॥ |

| Mėhlĝ 1. |
| First Mehl: |
| ਤਗ ਨ ਇੰਦਰੀ ਤਗ ਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ |
| Ŧag na inḝrī ṯag na nĝrī. |
| There is no sacred thread for the sexual organ, and no thread for woman. |
| ਭਲਕੇ ਥਕ ਪਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਦਾੜੀ ॥ |
| Bẖalke thuk pavai niṯ ḝĝṛī. |
| The man's beard is spat upon daily. |
| ਤਗ ਨ ਪੈਰੀ ਤਗ ਨ ਹਥੀ ॥ |
| Ŧag na pairī ṯag na hathī. |
| There is no sacred thread for the feet, and no thread for the hands; |
| ਤਗ ਨ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਤਗ ਨ ਅਖੀ ॥ |
| Ŧag na jihvĝ ṯag na akẖī. |
| no thread for the tongue, and no thread for the eyes. |
| ਵੇਤਗਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਤੈ ॥ |
| veṯgĝ ĝpe vaṯai. |
| The Brahmin himself goes to the world hereafter without a sacred thread. |
| ਵਟਿ ਧਾਗੇ ਅਵਰਾ ਘਤੈ ॥ |
| vat ḝẖĝge avrĝ gẖaṯai. |
| Twisting the threads, he puts them on others. |
| ਲੈ ਭਾੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਆਹ ॥ |
| Lai bẖĝṛ kare vī▫ĝhu. |
| He takes payment for performing marriages; |
| ਕਢਿ ਕਾਗਲ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹ ॥ |
| Kadẖ kĝgal ḝase rĝhu. |
| reading their horoscopes, he shows them the way. |
| ਸਣਿ ਵੇਖਹ ਲੋਕਾ ਝਹ ਵਿਡਾਣ ॥ |
| Suṇ vekẖhu lokĝ ehu vidĝṇ. |
| Hear, and see, O people, this wondrous thing. |
| ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਜਾਣ ॥੪॥ |
| Man anḝẖĝ nĝ▫o sujĝṇ. ॥4॥ |
| He is mentally blind, and yet his name is wisdom. ॥4॥ |
| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ |
| Pa▫oṛī. |
| Pauree: |
| ਸਾਹਿਬ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਸੀ ॥ |
| Sĝhib ho▫e ḝa▫i▫ĝl kirpĝ kare ṯĝ sĝ▫ī kĝr karĝ▫isī. |
| One, upon whom the Merciful Lord bestows His Grace, performs His service. |
| ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹਕਮ ਮਨਾਇਸੀ ॥ |
| So sevak sevĝ kare jis no hukam manĝ▫isī. |
| That servant, whom the Lord causes to obey the Order of His Will, serves Him. |
| ਹਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਝ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕਾ ਮਹਲ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
Hukam mani▫ai hovai parvĝṇ ṯĝ kẖasmai kĝ mahal pĝ▫isī. |
| Obeying the Order of His Will, he becomes acceptable, and then, he obtains the Mansion of the |
| Lord's Presence. |
| ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਹ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਫਲ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥ |
| Kẖasmai bẖĝvai so kare manhu cẖinḝi▫ĝ so fal pĝ▫isī. |
| One who acts to please His Lord and Master, obtains the fruits of his mind's desires. |
| ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇਸੀ ॥੧੫॥ |
| Ŧĝ ḝargėh paiḝẖĝ jĝ▫isī. ॥15॥ |
| Then, he goes to the Court of the Lord, wearing robes of honor. ॥15॥ |
| ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ |
| Salok mėhlĝ 1. |
| Shalok, First Mehl: |
| ਗਊ ਬਿਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਉ ਕਰ ਲਾਵਹ ਗੋਬਰਿ ਤਰਣ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ |
| Ga▫ū birĝhmaṇ ka▫o kar lĝvhu gobar ṯaraṇ na jĝ▫ī. |
| They tax the cows and the Brahmins, but the cow-dung they apply to their kitchen will not save them. |
| ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਧਾਨ ਮਲੇਛਾਂ ਖਾਈ ॥ |
| Ḏẖoṯī tikĝ ṯai japmĝlī ḝẖĝn malecẖẖĝʼn kẖĝ▫ī. |
| They wear their loin cloths, apply ritual frontal marks to their foreheads, and carry their rosaries, but they eat food with the Muslims. |
| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਸੰਜਮ ਤਰਕਾ ਭਾਈ ॥ |
| Anṯar pūjĝ paṛėh kaṯebĝ sanjam ṯurkĝ bẖĝ▫ī. |
| O Siblings of Destiny, you perform devotional worship indoors, but read the Islamic sacred texts, and adopt the Muslim way of life. |
| ਛੋਡੀਲੇ ਪਾਖੰਡਾ ॥ |
| Cẖẖodīle pĝkẖandĝ. |
| Renounce your hypocrisy! |
| ਨਾਮਿ ਲਇਝ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਰੰਦਾ ॥੧॥ |
| Nĝm la▫i▫ai jĝhi ṯaranḝĝ. ॥1॥ |
| Taking the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you shall swim across. ॥1॥ |
| ਮਃ ੧ ॥ |
| Mėhlĝ 1. |
| First Mehl: |
| ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥ |
| Mĝṇas kẖĝṇe karahi nivĝj. |
| The man-eaters say their prayers. |
| ਛਰੀ ਵਗਾਇਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਗਲਿ ਤਾਗ ॥ |
| Cẖẖurī vagĝ▫in ṯin gal ṯĝg. |
| Those who wield the knife wear the sacred thread around their necks. |
| ਤਿਨ ਘਰਿ ਬਰਹਮਣ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਨਾਦ ॥ |
| Ŧin gẖar barahmaṇ pūrėh nĝḝ. |
| In their homes, the Brahmins sound the conch. |
| ਉਨਹਹਾ ਭਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਓਈ ਸਾਦ ॥ |
| Unĥĝ bẖė ĝvahi o▫ī sĝḝ. |
| They too have the same taste. |
| ਕੂੜੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੂੜਾ ਵਾਪਾਰ ॥ |
| Kūṛī rĝs kūṛĝ vĝpĝr. |
| False is their capital, and false is their trade. |
| ਕੂੜ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਹਾਰ ॥ |
| Kūṛ bol karahi ĝhĝr. |
| Speaking falsehood, they take their food. |
| ਸਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥ |
| Saram ḝẖaram kĝ derĝ ḝūr. |
| The home of modesty and Dharma is far from them. |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ |
| Nĝnak kūṛ rahi▫ĝ bẖarpūr. |
| O Nanak, they are totally permeated with falsehood. |
| ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੇੜਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਕਖਾਈ ॥ |
| Mathai tikĝ ṯeṛ ḝẖoṯī kakẖĝ▫ī. |
| The sacred marks are on their foreheads, and the saffron loin-cloths are around their waists; |
| ਹਥਿ ਛਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਕਾਸਾਈ ॥ |
| Hath cẖẖurī jagaṯ kĝsĝ▫ī. |
| in their hands they hold the knives - they are the butchers of the world! |
