| Shalok, First Mehl: |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਾ ਇਕ ਰਥ ਇਕ ਰਥਵਾਹ ॥ |
| Nĝnak mer sarīr kĝ ik rath ik rathvĝhu. |
| O Nanak, the soul of the body has one chariot and one charioteer. |
| ਜਗ ਜਗ ਫੇਰਿ ਵਟਾਈਅਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬਝਹਿ ਤਾਹਿ ॥ |
| Jug jug fer vatĝ▫ī▫ah gi▫ĝnī bujẖėh ṯĝhi. |
| In age after age they change; the spiritually wise understand this. |
| ਸਤਜਗਿ ਰਥ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਧਰਮ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹ ॥ |
| Saṯjug rath sanṯokẖ kĝ ḝẖaram agai rathvĝhu. |
| In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, contentment was the chariot and righteousness the charioteer. |
| ਤਰੇਤੈ ਰਥ ਜਤੈ ਕਾ ਜੋਰ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹ ॥ |
| Ŧareṯai rath jaṯai kĝ jor agai rathvĝhu. |
| In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yuga, celibacy was the chariot and power the charioteer. |
| ਦਆਪਰਿ ਰਥ ਤਪੈ ਕਾ ਸਤ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹ ॥ |
| Ḏu▫ĝpur rath ṯapai kĝ saṯ agai rathvĝhu. |
| In the Brass Age of Dwaapar Yuga, penance was the chariot and truth the charioteer. |
| ਕਲਜਗਿ ਰਥ ਅਗਨਿ ਕਾ ਕੂੜ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹ ॥੧॥ |
| Kaljug rath agan kĝ kūṛ agai rathvĝhu. ॥1॥ |
| In the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, fire is the chariot and falsehood the charioteer. ॥1॥ |
| ਮਃ ੧ ॥ |
| Mėhlĝ 1. |
| First Mehl: |
| ਸਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਸੇਤੰਬਰ ਸਆਮੀ ਸਚ ਮਹਿ ਆਛੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹੇ ॥ |
| Sĝm kahai seṯambar su▫ĝmī sacẖ mėh ĝcẖẖai sĝcẖ rahe. |
| The Sama Veda says that the Lord Master is robed in white; in the Age of Truth, everyone desired Truth, abided in Truth, |
| ਸਭ ਕੋ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ |
| Sabẖ ko sacẖ samĝvai. |
| and was merged in the Truth. |
| ਰਿਗ ਕਹੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ |
| Rig kahai rahi▫ĝ bẖarpūr. |
| The Rig Veda says that God is permeating and pervading everywhere; |
| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਦੇਵਾ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਰ ॥ |
| Rĝm nĝm ḝevĝ mėh sūr. |
| among the deities, the Lord's Name is the most exalted. |
| ਨਾਇ ਲਇਝ ਪਰਾਛਤ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ |
| Nĝ▫e la▫i▫ai parĝcẖẖaṯ jĝhi. |
| Chanting the Name, sins depart; |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਤਉ ਮੋਖੰਤਰ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ |
| Nĝnak ṯa▫o mokẖanṯar pĝhi. |
| O Nanak, then, one obtains salvation. |
| ਜਜ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਰਿ ਛਲੀ ਚੰਦਰਾਵਲਿ ਕਾਨਹਹ ਕਰਿਸਨ ਜਾਦਮ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| Juj mėh jor cẖẖalī cẖanḝrĝval kĝnĥ krisan jĝḝam bẖa▫i▫ĝ. |
| In the Jujar Veda, Kaan Krishna of the Yaadva tribe seduced Chandraavali by force. |
| ਪਾਰਜਾਤ ਗੋਪੀ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਬਿੰਦਰਾਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੰਗ ਕੀਆ ॥ |
| Pĝrjĝṯ gopī lai ĝ▫i▫ĝ binḝrĝban mėh rang kī▫ĝ. |
| He brought the Elysian Tree for his milk-maid, and revelled in Brindaaban. |
| ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਬੇਦ ਅਥਰਬਣ ਹੂਆ ਨਾਉ ਖਦਾਈ ਅਲਹ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| Kal mėh beḝ atharbaṇ hū▫ĝ nĝ▫o kẖuḝĝ▫ī alhu bẖa▫i▫ĝ. |
| In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Atharva Veda became prominent; Allah became the Name of God. |
| ਨੀਲ ਬਸਤਰ ਲੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਤਰਕ ਪਠਾਣੀ ਅਮਲ ਕੀਆ ॥ |
| Nīl basṯar le kapṛe pahire ṯurak paṯẖĝṇī amal kī▫ĝ. |
| Men began to wear blue robes and garments; Turks and Pat'haans assumed power. |
| ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ ਹੋਝ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥ |
| Cẖĝre veḝ ho▫e sacẖiĝr. |
| The four Vedas each claim to be true. |
| ਪੜਹਿ ਗਣਹਿ ਤਿਨਹਹ ਚਾਰ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥ |
| Paṛėh guṇėh ṯinĥ cẖĝr vīcẖĝr. |
| Reading and studying them, four doctrines are found. |
| ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਨੀਚ ਸਦਾਝ ॥ |
| Bẖĝ▫o bẖagaṯ kar nīcẖ saḝĝ▫e. |
| With loving devotional worship, abiding in humility, |
| ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖੰਤਰ ਪਾਝ ॥੨॥ |
| Ŧa▫o Nĝnak mokẖanṯar pĝ▫e. ॥2॥ |
| O Nanak, salvation is attained. ॥2॥ |

| Pauree: |
| ਸਤਿਗਰ ਵਿਟਹ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਤ ਮਿਲਿਝ ਖਸਮ ਸਮਾਲਿਆ ॥ |
| Saṯgur vitahu vĝri▫ĝ jiṯ mili▫ai kẖasam samĝli▫ĝ. |
| I am a sacrifice to the True Guru; meeting Him, I have come to cherish the Lord Master. |
| ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨ ਦੀਆ ਇਨਹਹੀ ਨੇਤਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥ |
| Jin kar upḝes gi▫ĝn anjan ḝī▫ĝ inĥī neṯrī jagaṯ nihĝli▫ĝ. |
| He has taught me and given me the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom, and with these eyes, I behold the world. |
| ਖਸਮ ਛੋਡਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੇ ਡਬੇ ਸੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ॥ |
| Kẖasam cẖẖod ḝūjai lage dube se vaṇjĝri▫ĝ. |
| Those dealers who abandon their Lord and Master and attach themselves to another, are drowned. |
| ਸਤਿਗਰੂ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥ |
| Saṯgurū hai bohithĝ virlai kinai vīcẖĝri▫ĝ. |
| The True Guru is the boat, but few are those who realize this. |
| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੩॥ |
| Kar kirpĝ pĝr uṯĝri▫ĝ. ॥13॥ |
| Granting His Grace, He carries them across. ॥13॥ |

| Shalok, First Mehl: |
| ਸਿੰਮਲ ਰਖ ਸਰਾਇਰਾ ਅਤਿ ਦੀਰਘ ਅਤਿ ਮਚ ॥ |
| Simmal rukẖ sarĝ▫irĝ aṯ ḝīragẖ aṯ mucẖ. |
| The simmal tree is straight as an arrow; it is very tall, and very thick. |
| ਓਇ ਜਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਆਸ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੇ ਕਿਤ ॥ |
| O▫e jė ĝvahi ĝs kar jĝhi nirĝse kiṯ. |
| But those birds which visit it hopefully, depart disappointed. |
| ਫਲ ਫਿਕੇ ਫਲ ਬਕਬਕੇ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਪਤ ॥ |
| Fal fike ful bakbake kamm na ĝvahi paṯ. |
| Its fruits are tasteless, its flowers are nauseating, and its leaves are useless. |
| ਮਿਠਤ ਨੀਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗਣ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਤਤ ॥ |
| Miṯẖaṯ nīvī nĝnkĝ guṇ cẖang▫ĝ▫ī▫ĝ ṯaṯ. |
| Sweetness and humility, O Nanak, are the essence of virtue and goodness. |
| ਸਭ ਕੋ ਨਿਵੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਨਿਵੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| Sabẖ ko nivai ĝp ka▫o par ka▫o nivai na ko▫e. |
| Everyone bows down to himself; no one bows down to another. |
| ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੂ ਤੋਲੀਝ ਨਿਵੈ ਸ ਗਉਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| Ḏẖar ṯĝrĝjū ṯolī▫ai nivai so ga▫urĝ ho▫e. |
| When something is placed on the balancing scale and weighed, the side which descends is heavier. |
| ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਦੂਣਾ ਨਿਵੈ ਜੋ ਹੰਤਾ ਮਿਰਗਾਹਿ ॥ |
| Aprĝḝẖī ḝūṇĝ nivai jo hanṯĝ miragĝhi. |
| The sinner, like the deer hunter, bows down twice as much. |
| ਸੀਸਿ ਨਿਵਾਇਝ ਕਿਆ ਥੀਝ ਜਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਕਸਧੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ |
| Sīs nivĝ▫i▫ai ki▫ĝ thī▫ai jĝ riḝai kusuḝẖe jĝhi. ॥1॥ |
| But what can be achieved by bowing the head, when the heart is impure? ॥1॥ |
| ਮਃ ੧ ॥ |
| Mėhlĝ 1. |
| First Mehl: |
| ਪੜਿ ਪਸਤਕ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਬਾਦੰ ॥ |
| Paṛ pusṯak sanḝẖi▫ĝ bĝḝaʼn. |
| You read your books and say your prayers, and then engage in debate; |
| ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਬਗਲ ਸਮਾਧੰ ॥ |
| Sil pūjas bagul samĝḝẖaʼn. |
| you worship stones and sit like a stork, pretending to be in Samaadhi. |
| ਮਖਿ ਝੂਠ ਬਿਭੂਖਣ ਸਾਰੰ ॥ |
| Mukẖ jẖūṯẖ bibẖūkẖaṇ sĝraʼn. |
| With your mouth you utter falsehood, and you adorn yourself with precious decorations; |
| ਤਰੈਪਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥ |
| Ŧaraipĝl ṯihĝl bicẖĝraʼn. |
| you recite the three lines of the Gayatri three times a day. |
| ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਿਲਾਟੰ ॥ |
| Gal mĝlĝ ṯilak lilĝtaʼn. |
| Around your neck is a rosary, and on your forehead is a sacred mark; |
| ਦਇ ਧੋਤੀ ਬਸਤਰ ਕਪਾਟੰ ॥ |
| Ḏu▫e ḝẖoṯī basṯar kapĝtaʼn. |
| upon your head is a turban, and you wear two loin cloths. |
| ਜੇ ਜਾਣਸਿ ਬਰਹਮੰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥ |
| Je jĝṇas barahmaʼn karmaʼn. |
| If you knew the nature of God, |
| ਸਭਿ ਫੋਕਟ ਨਿਸਚਉ ਕਰਮੰ ॥ |
| Sabẖ fokat niscẖa▫o karmaʼn. |
| you would know that all of these beliefs and rituals are in vain. |
| ਕਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ |
| Kaho Nĝnak nihcẖa▫o ḝẖi▫ĝvai. |
| Says Nanak, meditate with deep faith; |
| ਵਿਣ ਸਤਿਗਰ ਵਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ |
| viṇ saṯgur vĝt na pĝvai. ॥2॥ |
| without the True Guru, no one finds the Way. ॥2॥ |
| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ |
| Pa▫oṛī. |
| Pauree: |
| ਕਪੜ ਰੂਪ ਸਹਾਵਣਾ ਛਡਿ ਦਨੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| Kapaṛ rūp suhĝvaṇĝ cẖẖad ḝunī▫ĝ anḝar jĝvṇĝ. |
| Abandoning the world of beauty, and beautiful clothes, one must depart. |
| ਮੰਦਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| Manḝĝ cẖanga ĝpṇĝ ĝpe hī kīṯĝ pĝvṇĝ. |
| He obtains the rewards of his good and bad deeds. |
| ਹਕਮ ਕੀਝ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਰਾਹਿ ਭੀੜੈ ਅਗੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| Hukam kī▫e man bẖĝvḝe rĝhi bẖīṛai agai jĝvṇĝ. |
| He may issue whatever commands he wishes, but he shall have to take to the narrow path hereafter. |
