Below are some of the finest quotations from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib:
(English translation may have been changed to improve readability and the authors personal understanding of the original Gurmukhi script as found in the Guru Granth Sahib)
The God of all is one; there is no other at all!
There is One God of all; there is no other at all |
By walking His path
By thinking, thoughts cannot result, even by thinking thousands of times. By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained, even by remaining continuously absorbed within. |
Beautiful gates, houses and palaces
Ḏar gẖar mėhlā sohṇe pake kot hajār. Hasṯī gẖoṛe pākẖre laskar lakẖ apār. Kis hī nāl na cẖali▫ā kẖap kẖap mu▫e asār. ॥3॥ |
Beautiful gates, houses and palaces, solidly built forts, elephants, saddled horses, hundreds of thousands of uncounted armies - |
You may gather gold and silver
Su▫inā rupā sancẖī▫ai māl jāl janjāl. Sabẖ jag mėh ḏohī ferī▫ai bin nāvai sir kāl. Pind paṛai jī▫o kẖelsī baḏfailī ki▫ā hāl. ॥4॥ |
You may gather gold and silver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement. You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, |
When you face extreme hardship
When you are confronted with terrible hardships, and no one offers you any support, when your friends turn into enemies, and even your relatives have deserted you, |
Where the Name of the Lord is chanted
Jithai nām japī▫ai parabẖ pi▫āre. Se asthal so▫in cẖa▫ubāre. ॥1॥ |
Where the Naam, the Name of God the Beloved is chanted - those barren places become mansions of gold.
Where the Naam, the Name of my Lord of the Universe is not chanted-those towns are like the barren wilderness. ॥1॥ |
Meeting the Beloved, true peace is found
Saṯgur kī sevā aṯ sukẖālī jo icẖẖe so fal pā▫e. Jaṯ saṯ ṯap paviṯ sarīrā har har man vasā▫e. Saḏā anand rahai ḏin rāṯī mil parīṯam sukẖ pā▫e. ॥3॥ |
Serving the True Guru brings a deep and profound peace, and one's desires are fulfilled. Abstinence, truthfulness and self-discipline are obtained, and the body is purified; the Lord, Har, Har, comes to dwell within the mind. |
