ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
Sabẖnā kā parabẖ ek hai ḏūjā avar na ko▫e.
There is One God of all; there is no other at all


By walking His path

ਸੋਚੈ ਸੋਚਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸੋਚੀ ਲਖ ਵਾਰ ॥ ਚੁਪੈ ਚੁਪ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਲਾਇ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੀ ਜੇ ਬੰਨਾ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਭਾਰ ॥ ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਲਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਤ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
ਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ ॥ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥

Socẖai socẖ na hova▫ī je socẖī lakẖ vār. Cẖupai cẖup na hova▫ī je lā▫e rahā liv ṯār.

Bẖukẖi▫ā bẖukẖ na uṯrī je bannā purī▫ā bẖār. Sahas si▫āṇpā lakẖ hohi ṯa ik na cẖalai nāl.
Kiv sacẖi▫ārā ho▫ī▫ai kiv kūrhai ṯutai pāl. Hukam rajā▫ī cẖalṇā Nānak likẖi▫ā nāl. ॥1॥

By thinking, thoughts cannot result, even by thinking thousands of times.

By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained, even by remaining continuously absorbed within.
The hunger of the hungry cannot be quenched, even by piling up loads of worldly goods.
Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but even one will not go along with you in the end.
So how can you become truthful? And how can the veil of illusion be torn away?
O Nanak, it is written that by obeying the Hukam (Will of the Lord) and by walking His path. ॥1॥

Beautiful gates, houses and palaces

ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਕੇ ਕੋਟ ਹਜਾਰ ॥ ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰੇ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਸਾਰ ॥੩॥

Ḏar gẖar mėhlā sohṇe pake kot hajār. Hasṯī gẖoṛe pākẖre laskar lakẖ apār.

Kis hī nāl na cẖali▫ā kẖap kẖap mu▫e asār. ॥3॥

Beautiful gates, houses and palaces, solidly built forts,

elephants, saddled horses, hundreds of thousands of uncounted armies -
none of these will go along with anyone in the end, and yet,
the fools bother themselves to exhaustion with these, and then die. ॥3॥

You may gather gold and silver

ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਮਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥

ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੋਹੀ ਫੇਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਜੀਉ ਖੇਲਸੀ ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੪॥

Su▫inā rupā sancẖī▫ai māl jāl janjāl.

Sabẖ jag mėh ḏohī ferī▫ai bin nāvai sir kāl. Pind paṛai jī▫o kẖelsī baḏfailī ki▫ā hāl. ॥4॥

You may gather gold and silver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement.

You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world,
but without the Remembrance of the Lord (Naam), death hovers over your head.
When the body falls, the play of life is over; what shall be the condition of the evil-doers then? ॥4॥

When you face extreme hardship

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਮੁਸਕਲੁ ਅਤਿ ਬਣੈ ਢੋਈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥ ਲਾਗੂ ਹੋਏ ਦੁਸਮਨਾ ਸਾਕ ਭਿ ਭਜਿ ਖਲੇ ॥

ਸਭੋ ਭਜੈ ਆਸਰਾ ਚੁਕੈ ਸਭੁ ਅਸਰਾਉ ॥ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਓਸੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਤਤੀ ਵਾਉ ॥੧॥

Jā ka▫o muskal aṯ baṇai dẖo▫ī ko▫e na ḏe▫e.Lāgū ho▫e ḏusmanā sāk bẖė bẖaj kẖale.

Sabẖo bẖajai āsrā cẖukai sabẖ asrā▫o. Cẖiṯ āvai os pārbarahm lagai na ṯaṯī vā▫o. ॥1॥

When you are confronted with terrible hardships, and no one offers you any support,

when your friends turn into enemies, and even your relatives have deserted you,
and when all support has given way, and all hope has been lost -
if you then come to remember the Supreme Lord God, even the hot wind shall not touch you. ॥1॥


Where the Name of the Lord is chanted

ਜਿਥੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ ਸੇ ਅਸਥਲ ਸੋਇਨ ਚਉਬਾਰੇ ॥ ਜਿਥੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੀਐ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਇਦਾ ਸੇਈ ਨਗਰ ਉਜਾੜੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
Jithai nām japī▫ai parabẖ pi▫āre. Se asthal so▫in cẖa▫ubāre. Jithai nām na japī▫ai mere go▫iḏā se▫ī nagar ujāṛī jī▫o. ॥1॥
Where the Naam, the Name of God the Beloved is chanted - those barren places become mansions of gold.

Where the Naam, the Name of my Lord of the Universe is not chanted-those towns are like the barren wilderness. ॥1॥


Meeting the Beloved, true peace is found

ਸਤਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਅਤਿ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਜੋ ਇਛੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਤਪੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
Saṯgur kī sevā aṯ sukẖālī jo icẖẖe so fal pā▫e. Jaṯ saṯ ṯap paviṯ sarīrā har har man vasā▫e. Saḏā anand rahai ḏin rāṯī mil parīṯam sukẖ pā▫e. ॥3॥
Serving the True Guru brings a deep and profound peace, and one's desires are fulfilled.

Abstinence, truthfulness and self-discipline are obtained, and the body is purified; the Lord, Har, Har, comes to dwell within the mind.
Such a person remains blissful forever, day and night. Meeting the Beloved, peace is found. ॥3॥


How do you recognise the Society of Saints?

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥ ਜਿਥੈ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
Saṯsangaṯ kaisī jāṇīai. Jithai eko nām vakẖāṇīai.
How do you recognise the Society of Saints?

For there, only the Name of the One is remembered.


Do Seva in this world and reserve a seat in Heaven

ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥ ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
vicẖ ḏunīā sev kamāīai. Ŧā ḏargėh baisaṇ pāīai.
Do Seva in this world and reserve a seat in Heaven
or

In the midst of this world, do seva, and you shall be given a place of honor in the Court of the Lord.
