This article highlights Shabads in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib connected with the great social problem of debt.


ਸਾਕਤ ਕਉ ਦਿਨ ਰੈਨਿ ਅੰਧਾਰੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਫਾਥੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲ ॥ ਖਿਨ੝ ਪਲ੝ ਹਰਿ ਪ੝ਰਭ੝ ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਵਸਿਓ ਰਿਨਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਬਹ੝ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਾਲ ॥੨॥

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਤਿ ਬ੝ਧਿ ਪਾਈ ਹਉ ਛੂਟੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਜਾਲ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਾਨਾ ਗ੝ਰਿ ਕੀਝ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੩॥

Sĝkaṯ ka­o ḝin rain anḝẖĝrī mohi fĝthė mĝ­i­ĝ jĝl. Kẖin pal har parabẖ riḝai na vasi­o rin bĝḝẖė baho biḝẖ bĝl.(2)

Saṯsangaṯ mil maṯ buḝẖ pĝ­ī ha­o cẖẖūtė mamṯĝ jĝl. Har nĝmĝ har mīṯẖ lagĝnĝ gur kī­ė sabaḝ nihĝl.(3)

Dark are the days and nights of the faithless cynics; they are caught in the trap of attachment to Maya.

The Lord God does not dwell in their hearts, even for an instant; every hair of their heads is totally tied up in debts.(2)
Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, wisdom and understanding are obtained, and one is released from the traps of egotism and possessiveness.
The Lord's Name, and the Lord, seem sweet to me. Through the Word of His Shabad, the Guru has made me happy.(3)
