Background of Charitropakhyan
Charitropakhyan is conversation between a wise adviser (minister or "manteree" ਮੰਤਰੀ s ) to Raja (king) Chitar Singh; each charitar or trick is mainly in connection with the wiles of women (plus a few connected with men) and other worldly tales of life, in order to save his handsome son Hanuvant from the false accusations of one of the younger ranis (queens). The minister tries to explain to the Raja that there can be trickery in human behaviour and that one needs to analyse the situation carefully before drawing any quick conclusions. Charitar means Function or behavior
Guru Gobind Singh has given these "opakhyan" (already told) stories to Khalsa, as a guide to upholding morality. The tales highlight Human psychology and behavior, by people driven by desires, lust, jealousy and/or greed, ignorance etc. and tell how these evil doers can utilize tricks or deception or charm or other activity to cover their tracks. The purpose of the stories is for us to learn about negative(Manmat) and positive(Gurmat) human behaviour by people who are driven by evil intent. One needs to tread carefully in life and understand the many negative traits exist in some evil doers. These Charitars includes Male and Female Charitars.

The first part of Charitropakhyan is Chandi Charitar. This is the writing of Guru Gobind Singh describing the positive Charitars of Chandi (Vivek Budhi) and asking for blessing of Almighty before the rest of this bani is narrated. The second tale, Charitar 2 is the narration of the conversation between the The Wise Minister and Raja Chiter Singh. He has a long communication with his Minister on Charitropakhyan lasting for many days. The First charitar ends with ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਖ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਚੰਡੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਧ੍ਯਾਇ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੧॥੪੮॥ਅਫਜੂੰ॥ (iti sree charitr pakhyaanay chandee charitray pratham thhyaai samaapatam (ends)- satu subham satu ॥1॥48॥afjoon॥) which means "Here Sri Charitr-pakhyan's Chandi Charitar the first citation ends - true good and true". All the other charitars end with ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਖ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੂਪ ਸੰਬਾਦੇ ਦੁਤਿਯ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੨॥੭੮॥ਅਫਜੂੰ॥ (iti sree charitr pakhyaanay triyaa charitray mantree (minister) bhoop (king) sanbaathay (between) thutiy charitr samaapatam (ends) - satu subham satu ॥2॥78॥afjoon॥) which means "Here Sri Charitr-pakhyan's Triyaa Charitar between Minister and King duality trickery ends - true good and true" This itself shows that these Charitars from number 2 onwards were the discourse between King Chitra Singh and his minister. Charitar number 2 tells us how a foolish and quick decision which a person takes with their eyes closed, without analysing the situation and not going into the fact of reality; acting foolishly according to the words of their wives, girl-friends or other loved ones can lead to serious injustice and distortion of the truth. Guru Ram Das said such person is foolish - ਜੋਰਾ ਦਾ ਆਖਿਆ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਸੇ ਅਪਵਿਤ ਅਮੇਧ ਖਲਾ ॥ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਕੁਸੁਧ ਨਰ ਸੇ ਜੋਰਾ ਪੁਛਿ ਚਲਾ ॥ Jorā ḏā ākẖi▫ā purakẖ kamāvḏe se apviṯ ameḏẖ kẖalā.Kām vi▫āpe kusuḏẖ nar se jorā pucẖẖ cẖalā. Men who dance to the orders of overbearing women are impure, filthy and foolish. Enslaved by lust, these impure men walk according to their women's wishes. |
The Tale
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
ਕਥਾ ਚਤਰਦਸ ਮੰਤਰ ਬਰ ਨਰਿਪ ਸੌ ਕਹੀ ਬਖਾਨਿ ॥
Thus the Minister narrated the fourteenth parable to the Raja.
ਸਨਤ ਰੀਝਿ ਕੇ ਨਰਿਪ ਰਹੇ ਦਿਯੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਿਹ ਦਾਨ ॥੧॥
The Raja was extremely pleased and made the Minister very rich by giving him money.(l)
ਝਕ ਬਿਮਾਤਰਾ ਭਾਨ ਕੀ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਪਰ ਬੀਚ ॥
A widow used to live in the city of Ramdaspur.
ਬਹ ਪਰਖਨ ਸੌ ਰਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਊਚ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਨੀਚ ॥੨॥
She would offer love to various people with no discrimination of caste.(2)
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪਤਿ ਮਰਿ ਗਯੋ ਜਬੇ ਤਾਹਿ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਅਵਧਾਨ ॥
Her spouse had died soon after she became pregnant and, shy of
ਅਧਿਕ ਹਰਿਦੈ ਭੀਤਰ ਡਰੀ ਲੋਕ ਲਾਜ ਜਿਯ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੩॥
people’s abashment, she was worried.(3)
ਚੌਪਈ ॥
ਭਾਨ ਮਤੀ ਤਿਹਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖਨਿਯਤ ॥ ਬਡੀ ਛਿਨਾਰਿ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਜਨਿਯਤ ॥
Her name was Bhaanmati and she was known as a charlatan.
ਜਬ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਰਹਿ ਗਯੋ ਅਧਾਨਾ ॥ ਤਬ ਅਬਲਾ ਕੋ ਹਰਿਦੈ ਡਰਾਨਾ ॥੪॥
She was very much apprehensive of her pregnancy.( 4)
ਅੜਿਲ ॥
ਤਿਨ ਪਰਸਾਦ ਹੂ ਕਿਯ ਬਹ ਪਰਖ ਬਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
She conducted a sacrificial feast and called numerous people.
ਤਿਨ ਦੇਖਤ ਰਹੀ ਸੋਇ ਸ ਖਾਟ ਡਸਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
Before their arrival, she had put herself to sleep on a bed.
ਚਮਕਿ ਠਾਢ ਉਠਿ ਭਈ ਚਰਿਤਰ ਮਨ ਆਨਿ ਕੈ ॥
She stood up abruptly with deceiving intention,
ਹੋ ਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ ॥੫॥
And started to cry aloud repeating the name of her husband.(5)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
ਜਾ ਦਿਨ ਮੋਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਮਰੇ ਮੋ ਸੌ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬਲਾਇ ॥
‘The day my husband expired, he told me
ਜੇ ਅਬ ਤੂੰ ਮੋ ਸੌ ਜਰੈ ਪਰੈ ਨਰਕ ਮੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
“If you immolate with my (dead) body you will go to hell.”(6)
ਅੜਿਲ ॥
ਭਾਨ ਲਰਿਕਵਾ ਰਹੈ ਸੇਵ ਤਿਹ ਕੀਜਿਯੈ ॥
“Bhanu (my son) is still a child,
ਪਾਲਿ ਪੋਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਡੋ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਜਿਯੈ ॥
you will have to look after him and bring him up.
ਆਪ ਜਦਿਨ ਵਹ ਖੈ ਹੈ ਖਾਟਿ ਕਮਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
“When he starts to earn his livelihood,
ਹੋ ਤਦਿਨ ਸਪਨਿ ਤਹਿ ਦੈਹੋ ਹੌ ਹੂੰ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥੭॥
I will come, then, and meet you in the dream.”(7)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
ਭਾਨ ਕਰੋ ਕਰਤੇ ਬਡੋ ਸਪਨ ਦਿਯੋ ਪਤਿ ਆਇ ॥
‘Bhanu is now big enough now and my husband has come into my dream.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਹੌ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਜਰਤ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪਰ ਜਾਇ ॥੮॥
‘Consequently I am going to Kiratpur of (Guru) Har Rai and immolate myself.(8)
ਅੜਿਲ ॥
ਲੋਗ ਅਟਕਿ ਬਹ ਰਹੇ ਨ ਤਿਨ ਬਚ ਮਾਨਿਯੋ ॥
People tried to dissuade her but she did not listen to anyone.
ਧਨ ਲਟਾਇ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੀ ਘਨੋ ਹਠ ਠਾਨਿਯੋ ॥
Stubbornly she laundered all her wealth and commenced her mission.
ਰਾਮ ਦਾਸ ਪਰ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪਰ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥
Leaving Ramdaspur, she came to Keeratpur
ਹੋ ਇਕ ਪਗ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਰੀ ਮਰਿਦੰਗ ਬਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੯॥
and with the beat of the drum, and standing on one leg she immolated herself.(9)
ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥
ਬਹ ਲੋਗਨ ਦੇਖਤ ਜਰੀ ਇਕ ਪਗ ਠਾਢੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
When many people saw her immolating herself.
ਹੇਰਿ ਰੀਝਿ ਰੀਝਿਕ ਰਹੇ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਜਾਨਤ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੦॥
They were satisfied with her sincerity but they did not realize the truth.(10)
ਸਕਲ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਜੇ ਪਰਖ ਤਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਸਵਾਸ ॥
One who trust (such) a woman,
ਸਾਤਿ ਦਿਵਸ ਭੀਤਰ ਤਰਤ ਹੋਤ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਨਾਸ ॥੧੧॥
within seven days he destroys himself.(11)
ਜੋ ਨਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਤਰਿਯਾ ਕੋ ਦੇਤ ਆਪਨੋ ਚਿਤ ॥
One who discloses his secret to (such) a lady,
ਤਾ ਨਰ ਕੌ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਹੋਤ ਖਆਰੀ ਨਿਤ ॥੧੨॥
he always degrades himself.(l2)
ਇਤਿ ਸਰੀ ਚਰਿਤਰ ਪਖਯਾਨੇ ਤਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤਰੇ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਭੂਪ ਸੰਬਾਦੇ ਪੰਦਰਸਮੋ ਚਰਿਤਰ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤ ਸਭਮ ਸਤ ॥੧੫॥੨੬੫॥ਅਫਜੂੰ॥

What This Charitar Teaches
- No Blind Trust: Anti Dasam people often Questions that This charitaris against woman, but in actual this charitar is not against woman at all. Kindly read these lines:
ਸਕਲ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਜੇ ਪਰਖ ਤਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਸਵਾਸ ॥
One who trust(such) a woman,
ਸਾਤਿ ਦਿਵਸ ਭੀਤਰ ਤਰਤ ਹੋਤ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਨਾਸ ॥੧੧॥
within seven days he destroys himself.(11)
The Charitar itself shows that people blindly trusted that woman without going in depth. This is not attitude of Khalsa. In Homes, mother in law and daughter in law fights, but when the males of that homes blindly trust Daughter in law or mother in law then they will oviously take wrong decision. So If you trust such woman then you will destroy yourself, and how actually you destroy yourself, Guru Granth Sahib clears it ਜੋਰਾ ਦਾ ਆਖਿਆ ਪਰਖ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਸੇ ਅਪਵਿਤ ਅਮੇਧ ਖਲਾ ॥ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਕਸਧ ਨਰ ਸੇ ਜੋਰਾ ਪਛਿ ਚਲਾ ॥ . This is not to degrade woman but to degrade such persons which take wrong decisions just by listening to their women and not in 7 days but in one day you destroy yourself.
- Don't Give Heart to World, Walk in Command of God: Now this is most sensitive thing and is context with Gurmat.
ਜੋ ਨਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਤਰਿਯਾ ਕੋ ਦੇਤ ਆਪਨੋ ਚਿਤ ॥
One who discloses his secret to (such) a lady,
ਤਾ ਨਰ ਕੌ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਹੋਤ ਖਆਰੀ ਨਿਤ ॥੧੨॥ he always degrades himself.(l2)
ਦੇਤ ਆਪਨੋ ਚਿਤ(ਦਿਲ) Those people who attach their consciousness with woman, to them Gurbani itself says ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਕਹਹ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਇ ॥ . The Chit is for God only and In God's Hukam. ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਝਕਸ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਇ ॥ .O my mind, focus your consciousness on the One. ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗਰ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਇ ॥.
ਚਿਤ is not for woman or for world Chit is only for Gurbani for God and person who have ਚਿਤ for God knows how to treat with woman how to Take decisions rationally. Both Man and Woman should have one decisions than they are called DHANN PIR, but if man blindly take actions acc. to woman's order and so woman are doing then you are degrading from spirituality. Read following Shabads which are saying not to tangle with Woman only, wether yours or others....
- ਮਾਨਸ ਕੋ ਜਨਮ ਲੀਨ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਹ ਨਿਮਖ ਕੀਨ ॥
You obtained this human life, but you have not remembered the Lord in meditation, even for an instant.
ਦਾਰਾ ਸਖ ਭਇਓ ਦੀਨ ਪਗਹ ਪਰੀ ਬੇਰੀ ॥੧॥
For the sake of pleasure, you have become subservient to your woman, and now your feet are bound. ||1||
- ਸਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਅਨੇਕ ਬਹਤ ਰੰਗ ਅਰ ਵੇਸ ॥
You may have children, a wife and many mistresses; you may enjoy all sorts of pleasures and fine clothes.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਵਸਈ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਲੇਖਿ ॥੧॥
And yet, if the Name of the Lord does not abide within the heart, none of it has any use or value. ||1||
- ਇਆ ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਅਰ ਸਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਪੇਖਨ ਕਉ ਜ ਦਇਓ ॥
This wealth, youth, children and spouse which the Lord has given you - this is all just a passing show.
ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਅਟਕਿ ਜੋ ਉਰਝੇ ਇੰਦਰੀ ਪਰੇਰਿ ਲਇਓ ॥੩॥
Those who are caught and entangled in these are carried away by sensual desire. ||3||
- ਧਨ ਦਾਰਾ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗਰੇਹ ॥
Wealth, spouse, property and household-
ਕਛ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਸਮਝ ਲੇਹ ॥੨॥
none of them shall go along with you; you must know that this is true! ||2||
