ਗੋਰਾਂ ਸੇ ਨਿਮਾਣੀਆ ਬਹਸਨਿ ਰੂਹਾਂ ਮਲਿ ॥

Gorĝʼn se nimĝṇī▫ĝ bahsan rūhĝʼn mal.

They remain there, in those unhonored graves.

ਆਖੀਂ ਸੇਖਾ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਚਲਣ੝ ਅਜ੝ ਕਿ ਕਲਿ ॥੯੭॥

Ākẖīʼn sekẖĝ banḝagī cẖalaṇ aj kė kal. (97)

O Shaykh, dedicate yourself to God; you will have to depart, today or tomorrow. (97)

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮਉਤੈ ਦਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਝਵੈ ਦਿਸੈ ਜਿਉ ਦਰੀਆਵੈ ਢਾਹਾ ॥

Farīḝĝ ma▫uṯai ḝĝ bannĝ evai ḝisai ji▫o ḝarī▫ĝvai dẖĝhĝ.

Fareed, the shore of death looks like the river-bank, being eroded away.

ਅਗੈ ਦੋਜਕ੝ ਤਪਿਆ ਸ੝ਣੀਝ ਹੂਲ ਪਵੈ ਕਾਹਾਹਾ ॥

Agai ḝojak ṯapi▫ĝ suṇī▫ai hūl pavai kĝhĝhĝ.

Beyond is the burning hell, from which cries and shrieks are heard.

ਇਕਨਾ ਨੋ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਆਈ ਇਕਿ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥

Iknĝ no sabẖ sojẖī ĝ▫ī ik firḝe veparvĝhĝ.

Some understand this completely, while others wander around carelessly.

ਅਮਲ ਜਿ ਕੀਤਿਆ ਦ੝ਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਓਗਾਹਾ ॥੯੮॥

Amal jė kīṯi▫ĝ ḝunī vicẖ se ḝargėh ohĝgĝ. (98)

Those actions which are done in this world, shall be examined in the Court of the Lord. (98)

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਰੀਆਵੈ ਕੰਨ੝ਹ੝ਹੈ ਬਗ੝ਲਾ ਬੈਠਾ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇ ॥

Farīḝĝ ḝarī▫ĝvai kanĥai bagulĝ baiṯẖĝ kel kare.

Fareed, the crane perches on the river bank, playing joyfully.

ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇਦੇ ਹੰਝ ਨੋ ਅਚਿੰਤੇ ਬਾਜ ਪਝ ॥

Kel kareḝe hanjẖ no acẖinṯe bĝj pa▫e.

While it is playing, a hawk suddenly pounces on it.

ਬਾਜ ਪਝ ਤਿਸ੝ ਰਬ ਦੇ ਕੇਲਾਂ ਵਿਸਰੀਆਂ ॥

Bĝj pa▫e ṯis rab ḝe kelĝʼn visrī▫ĝʼn.

When the Hawk of God attacks, playful sport is forgotten.

ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਚੇਤੇ ਸਨਿ ਸੋ ਗਾਲੀ ਰਬ ਕੀਆਂ ॥੯੯॥

Jo man cẖiṯ na cẖeṯe san so gĝlī rab kī▫ĝʼn. (99)

God does what is not expected or even considered. (99)

ਸਾਢੇ ਤ੝ਰੈ ਮਣ ਦੇਹ੝ਰੀ ਚਲੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਨਿ ॥

Sĝdẖe ṯarai maṇ ḝehurī cẖalai pĝṇī ann.

The body is nourished by water and grain.

ਆਇਓ ਬੰਦਾ ਦ੝ਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਤਿ ਆਸੂਣੀ ਬੰਨ੝ਹ੝ਹਿ ॥

Ā▫i▫o banḝĝ ḝunī vicẖ vaṯ ĝsūṇī banėh.

The mortal comes into the world with high hopes.

ਮਲਕਲ ਮਉਤ ਜਾਂ ਆਵਸੀ ਸਭ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਭੰਨਿ ॥

Malkal ma▫uṯ jĝʼn ĝvsī sabẖ ḝarvĝje bẖann.

But when the Messenger of Death comes, it breaks down all the doors.

ਤਿਨ੝ਹ੝ਹਾ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਭਾਈਆਂ ਅਗੈ ਦਿਤਾ ਬੰਨ੝ਹ੝ਹਿ ॥

Ŧinĥĝ pi▫ĝri▫ĝ bẖĝ▫ī▫ĝʼn agai ḝiṯĝ banėh.

It binds and gags the mortal, before the eyes of his beloved brothers.

ਵੇਖਹ੝ ਬੰਦਾ ਚਲਿਆ ਚਹ੝ ਜਣਿਆ ਦੈ ਕੰਨ੝ਹ੝ਹਿ ॥

vekẖhu banḝĝ cẖali▫ĝ cẖahu jaṇi▫ĝ ḝai kaʼnniĥ.

Behold, the mortal being is going away, carried on the shoulders of four men.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਅਮਲ ਜਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਦ੝ਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਆਝ ਕੰਮਿ ॥੧੦੦॥

Farīḝĝ amal jė kīṯe ḝunī vicẖ ḝargėh ĝ▫e kamm. (100)

Fareed, only those good deeds done in the world will be of any use in the Court of the Lord. (100)

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਨ੝ਹ੝ਹ ਪੰਖੀਆ ਜੰਗਲਿ ਜਿੰਨ੝ਹ੝ਹਾ ਵਾਸ੝ ॥

Farīḝĝ ha▫o balihĝrī ṯinĥ pankẖī▫ĝ jangal jinĥĝ vĝs.

Fareed, I am a sacrifice to those birds which live in the jungle.

ਕਕਰ੝ ਚ੝ਗਨਿ ਥਲਿ ਵਸਨਿ ਰਬ ਨ ਛੋਡਨਿ ਪਾਸ੝ ॥੧੦੧॥

Kakar cẖugan thal vasan rab na cẖẖodan pĝs. (101)

They peck at the roots and live on the ground, but they do not leave the Lord's side. (101)

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰ੝ਤਿ ਫਿਰੀ ਵਣ੝ ਕੰਬਿਆ ਪਤ ਝੜੇ ਝੜਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

Farīḝĝ ruṯ firī vaṇ kambi▫ĝ paṯ jẖaṛe jẖaṛ pĝhi.

Fareed, the seasons change, the woods shake and the leaves drop from the trees.

ਚਾਰੇ ਕ੝ੰਡਾ ਢੂੰਢੀਆਂ ਰਹਣ੝ ਕਿਥਾਊ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧੦੨॥

Cẖĝre kundĝ dẖūʼndẖī▫ĝʼn rahaṇ kithĝ▫ū nĝhi. (102)

I have searched in the four directions, but I have not found any resting place anywhere. (102)

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਪਾੜਿ ਪਟੋਲਾ ਧਜ ਕਰੀ ਕੰਬਲੜੀ ਪਹਿਰੇਉ ॥

Farīḝĝ pĝṛ patolĝ ḝẖaj karī kamblaṛī pahire▫o.

Fareed, I have torn my clothes to tatters; now I wear only a rough blanket.

ਜਿਨ੝ਹ੝ਹੀ ਵੇਸੀ ਸਹ੝ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੇਈ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਉ ॥੧੦੩॥

Jinĥī vesī saho milai se▫ī ves kare▫o. (103)

I wear only those clothes which will lead me to meet my Lord. (103)

Mėhlĝ 3.

Third Mehl:

ਕਾਇ ਪਟੋਲਾ ਪਾੜਤੀ ਕੰਬਲੜੀ ਪਹਿਰੇਇ ॥

Kĝ▫e patolĝ pĝṛ▫ṯī kamblaṛī pahire▫e.

Why do you tear apart your fine clothes, and take to wearing a rough blanket?

ਨਾਨਕ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਸਹ੝ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੇ ਨੀਅਤਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧੦੪॥

Nĝnak gẖar hī baiṯẖi▫ĝ saho milai je nī▫aṯ rĝs kare▫i. (104)

O Nanak, even sitting in your own home, you can meet the Lord, if your mind is in the right place. (104)

Mėhlĝ 5.

Fifth Mehl:

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਗਰਬ੝ ਜਿਨ੝ਹ੝ਹਾ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਧਨਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਆਗਾਹ ॥

Farīḝĝ garab jinĥĝ vaḝi▫ĝ▫ī▫ĝ ḝẖan joban ĝgĝh.

Fareed, those who are very proud of their greatness, wealth and youth,

ਖਾਲੀ ਚਲੇ ਧਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਟਿਬੇ ਜਿਉ ਮੀਹਾਹ੝ ॥੧੦੫॥

Kẖĝlī cẖale ḝẖaṇī si▫o tibe ji▫o mīhahu. (105)

shall return empty-handed from their Lord, like sandhills after the rain. (105)

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਮ੝ਖ ਡਰਾਵਣੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਓਨ੝ ਨਾਉ ॥

Farīḝĝ ṯinĝ mukẖ darĝvaṇe jinĝ visĝri▫on nĝ▫o.

Fareed, the faces of those who forget the Lord's Name are dreadful.

ਝਥੈ ਦ੝ਖ ਘਣੇਰਿਆ ਅਗੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥੧੦੬॥

Aithai ḝukẖ gẖaṇeri▫ĝ agai ṯẖa▫ur na ṯẖĝ▫o. (106)

They suffer terrible pain here, and hereafter they find no place of rest or refuge. (106)

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਪਿਛਲ ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਗਿਓਹਿ ਜੀਵਦੜੋ ਮ੝ਇਓਹਿ ॥

Farīḝĝ picẖẖal rĝṯ na jĝgi▫ohi jīvaḝ▫ṛo mu▫i▫ohi.

Fareed, if you do not awaken in the early hours before dawn, you are dead while yet alive.

ਜੇ ਤੈ ਰਬ੝ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਤ ਰਬਿ ਨ ਵਿਸਰਿਓਹਿ ॥੧੦੭॥

Je ṯai rab visĝri▫ĝ ṯa rab na visari▫ohi. (107)

Although you have forgotten God, God has not forgotten you. (107)

Mėhlĝ 5.

Fifth Mehl:

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੰਤ੝ ਰੰਗਾਵਲਾ ਵਡਾ ਵੇਮ੝ਹਤਾਜ੝ ॥

Farīḝĝ kanṯ rangvĝlĝ vadĝ vemuhṯĝj.

Fareed, my Husband Lord is full of joy; He is Great and Self-sufficient.

ਅਲਹ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਝਹ੝ ਸਚਾਵਾਂ ਸਾਜ੝ ॥੧੦੮॥

Alah seṯī raṯi▫ĝ ehu sacẖĝvĝʼn sĝj. (108)

To be imbued with the Lord God - this is the most beautiful decoration. (108)

Mėhlĝ 5.

Fifth Mehl:

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦ੝ਖ੝ ਸ੝ਖ੝ ਇਕ੝ ਕਰਿ ਦਿਲ ਤੇ ਲਾਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ੝ ॥

Farīḝĝ ḝukẖ sukẖ ik kar ḝil ṯe lĝhi vikĝr.

Fareed, look upon pleasure and pain as the same; eradicate corruption from your heart.

ਅਲਹ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਭਲਾ ਤਾਂ ਲਭੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ੝ ॥੧੦੯॥

Alah bẖĝvai so bẖalĝ ṯĝʼn labẖī ḝarbĝr. (109)

Whatever pleases the Lord God is good; understand this, and you will reach His Court. (109)

Mėhlĝ 5.

Fifth Mehl:

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦ੝ਨੀ ਵਜਾਈ ਵਜਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਵਜਹਿ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

Farīḝĝ ḝunī vajĝ▫ī vajḝī ṯūʼn bẖī vajėh nĝl.

Fareed, the world dances as it dances, and you dance with it as well.

ਸੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਨ ਵਜਦਾ ਜਿਸ੝ ਅਲਹ੝ ਕਰਦਾ ਸਾਰ ॥੧੧੦॥

So▫ī jī▫o na vajḝĝ jis alhu karḝĝ sĝr. (110)

That soul alone does not dance with it, who is under the care of the Lord God. (110)

Fifth Mehl:

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਿਲ੝ ਰਤਾ ਇਸ੝ ਦ੝ਨੀ ਸਿਉ ਦ੝ਨੀ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ਕੰਮਿ ॥

Farīḝĝ ḝil raṯĝ is ḝunī si▫o ḝunī na kiṯai kamm.

Fareed, the heart is imbued with this world, but the world is of no use to it at all.
