Sikhism does not endorse caste based distinctions in society that lead to unequal opportunities for some people. In fact, Sikhism completely rejects class or race based distinctions between humans, that leads us to make an inequitable society. Such distinctions have surfaced only due to ill interests of certain section of people, who, on the pretext of making a society more manageable through these classifications, eventually paved the way to an unequal grouping within the human race. The Sikh Ramgarhia (Lohar: the term is sometimes considered a synonym for blacksmith) was regarded as a backward caste in pre-Sikh times as compared to the Brahmins and Kshatriyas classes. In modern times, Sikhi does not recognise any castes and as such it is incorrect to refer to a Sikh as a Ramgarhia Sikh! The Ramgarhias are a Northern Indian ethnic tribe that inhabits the Punjab and are also linked to Vishwakarma "God". In Old Era they were mainly carpenters and metal workers. In more recent period in Punjab Ramgarhia professions were Civil Engineer, Electrical Engineering, Mechanic, Architecture, etc. Although some stratification still remains in Sikhs in the Punjab, this has predominately disappeared in Sikh communities abroad.
