A boat is a watercraft designed to float on, and provide transport over, water. Usually this water will be inland or in protected coastal areas.. In this article the boat is considered as life and death.

Guru Nanak Dev

ਨਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਾ ਤ੝ਲਹੜਾ ਨਾ ਪਾਈਝ ਪਿਰ੝ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥
ना बेड़ी ना तढ़लहड़ा ना पाईझ पिरढ़ दूरि ॥१॥
Nĝ bėṛī nĝ ṯulhaṛĝ nĝ pĝ­ī­ai pir ḝūr. ||1||
No boat or raft can take you to Him. Your Husband Lord is far away. ||1||

Page 17, Line 13 ਗ੝ਰ੝ ਪਉੜੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਗ੝ਰ੝ ਤ੝ਲਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
गढ़रढ़ पउड़ी बेड़ी गढ़रू गढ़रढ़ तढ़लहा हरि नाउ ॥
Gur pa­oṛī bėṛī gurū gur ṯulhĝ har nĝ­o.
The Guru is the Ladder, the Guru is the Boat, and the Guru is the Raft to take me to the Lord's Name.

गढ़रढ़ सरढ़ सागरढ़ बोहिथो गढ़रढ़ तीरथढ़ दरीआउ ॥
Gur sar sĝgar bohitho gur ṯirath ḝarī­ĝ­o.
The Guru is the Boat to carry me across the world-ocean; the Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Holy River.

नानक बेड़ी सच की तरीझ गढ़र वीचारि ॥
Nĝnak bėṛī sacẖ kī ṯarī­ai gur vīcẖĝr.
O Nanak, the Boat of Truth will ferry you across; contemplate the Guru.

आपे सागरढ़ बोहिथा आपे पारढ़ अपारढ़ ॥
Āpė sĝgar bohithĝ ĝpė pĝr apĝr.
You Yourself are the ocean and the boat. You Yourself are this shore, and the one beyond.

Those who fail to embark upon that boat shall be beaten in the Court of the Lord.

पथर की बेड़ी जे चड़ै भर नालि बढ़डावै ॥४॥
Pathar kī bėṛī jė cẖaṛai bẖar nĝl budĝvai. ||4||
If someone embarks on a boat of stone, he shall drown with its cargo. ||4||

False is sweetness, false is honey; through falsehood, boat-loads of men have drowned.

Without the boat, one is drowned in the sea of fear, O Beloved; how can I reach the distant shore? ||1||Pause||

हम डोलत बेड़ी पाप भरी है पवणढ़ लगै मतढ़ जाई ॥
Ham dolaṯ bėṛī pĝp bẖarī hai pavaṇ lagai maṯ jĝ­ī.
My boat is wobbly and unsteady; it is filled with sins. The wind is rising - what if it tips over?


Page 990, Line 1 ਭਉ ਬੇੜਾ ਜੀਉ ਚੜਾਊ ॥
भउ बेड़ा जीउ चड़ाऊ ॥
Bẖa­o bėṛĝ jī­o cẖaṛĝ­ū.
So let the Fear of God be the boat to carry your soul across.

कहढ़ नानक देवै काहू ॥४॥२॥

Bohith jal sir ṯar tikai sĝcẖĝ vakẖar jiṯ.
The boat crosses over the water, carrying the true merchandise.


Page 1009, Line 11 ਬਿਖ੝ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਦੀਆ ਸਮ੝ੰਦ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥
बिखढ़ बोहिथा लादिआ दीआ समढ़ंद मंझारि ॥
Bikẖ bohithĝ lĝḝi­ĝ ḝī­ĝ samunḝ manjẖĝr.
The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea.


Page 1009, Line 12 ਵੰਝੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਖੇਵਟੂ ਜਲ੝ ਸਾਗਰ੝ ਅਸਰਾਲ੝ ॥੧॥
वंझी हाथि न खेवटू जलढ़ सागरढ़ असरालढ़ ॥१॥
vanjẖī hĝth na kẖėvtū jal sĝgar asrĝl. ||1||
There are no oars, nor any boatmen, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||

Abandoning all evil actions, he crosses over in the boat of Truth. ||7||

they all come and go; they cannot remain. They are like boatloads of passengers embarking. ||2||

I have seen them crossing over there, on the boat of the True Guru. ||6||

सतिगढ़रढ़ बोहिथढ़ आदि जढ़गादी राम नामि निसतारा हे ॥८॥
Saṯgur bohith ĝḝ jugĝḝī rĝm nĝm nisṯĝrĝ hė. ||8||
From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, the True Guru has been the boat; through the Lord's Name, He carries us across. ||8||

The Guru is the boat, the ship, the raft; meditating on the Lord in your mind, you shall be carried across to the other side. ||1||

झ मन मेरिआ बिनढ़ बेड़ी पारि न अढ़मबड़ै राम ॥
Ė man mėri­ĝ bin bėṛī pĝr na ambṛai rĝm.
O my mind, without a boat, you shall not reach the other shore.

राम नामढ़ जपि बेड़ा बांधहढ़ दइआ करहढ़ दइआला ॥१॥
Rĝm nĝm jap bėṛĝ bĝʼnḝẖahu ḝa­i­ĝ karahu ḝa­i­ĝlĝ. ||1||
Chant the Name of the Lord. Build your boat, and pray, "O Merciful Lord, please be merciful to me."||1||

जे तूं पड़िआ पंडितढ़ बीना दढ़इ अखर दढ़इ नावा ॥
Jė ṯūʼn paṛi­ĝ pandiṯ bīnĝ ḝu­ė akẖar ḝu­ė nĝvĝ.
If you are a learned and wise religious scholar, then make a boat of the letters of the Lord's Name.


Page 1287, Line 15 ਬੰਧ੝ ਤ੝ਟਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾ ਤ੝ਲਹਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਥ ॥
बंधढ़ तढ़टा बेड़ी नही ना तढ़लहा ना हाथ ॥
Banḝẖ ṯutĝ bėṛī nahī nĝ ṯulhĝ nĝ hĝth.
The dam has burst. There is no boat. There is no raft. The water's depth is unfathomable.


Page 1290, Line 18 ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ੝ ਬੋਹਿਥ੝ ਬੇੜ੝ ਸਚਾ ਰਖਸੀ ॥
सतिगढ़रढ़ बोहिथढ़ बेड़ढ़ सचा रखसी ॥
Saṯgur bohith bėṛ sacẖĝ rakẖsī.
So climb aboard the boat of the True Guru, and the True Lord will rescue you.


Page 1332, Line 14 ਸਾਇਰ ਸਪਤ ਭਰੇ ਜਲ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਉਲਟੀ ਨਾਵ ਤਰਾਵੈ ॥
साइर सपत भरे जल निरमलि उलटी नाव तरावै ॥
Sĝ­ir sapaṯ bẖarė jal nirmal ultī nĝv ṯarĝvai.
The seven seas are overflowing with the Immaculate Water; the inverted boat floats across.


Page 1410, Line 10 ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ ਸਿਉ ਆਲਾਇ ਬੇੜੇ ਡ੝ਬਣਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਉ ॥੪॥
सतिगढ़र सिउ आलाइ बेड़े डढ़बणि नाहि भउ ॥४॥
Saṯgur si­o ĝlĝ­ė bėṛė dubaṇ nĝhi bẖa­o. ||4||
If you cry out for help from the True Guru, you have nothing to fear - your boat will not sink. ||4||

Saṯgur sacẖĝ hai bohithĝ sabḝė bẖavjal ṯarṇĝ. ||6||
The True Guru is the Boat of Truth; in the Word of the Shabad, we cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||6||

Make the Lord's Name your boat, and install the Word of the Shabad as the boatman.

सबदढ़ खेवटढ़ विचि पाझ हरि आपि लघाझ इन बिधि दढ़तरढ़ तरीझ ॥
Sabaḝ kẖėvat vicẖ pĝ­ė har ĝp lagẖĝ­ė in biḝẖ ḝuṯar ṯarī­ai.
With the Shabad installed as the boatman, the Lord Himself shall take you across. In this way, the difficult ocean is crossed.

Page 509, Line 14 ਪਥਰ ਪਾਪ ਬਹ੝ ਲਦਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਝ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
पथर पाप बहढ़ लदिआ किउ तरीझ तारी ॥
Pathar pĝp baho laḝi­ĝ ki­o ṯarī­ai ṯĝrī.
Loaded with so very many stones of sin, how can the boat cross over?

आपे सागरढ़ आपे बोहिथा आपे ही खेवाटढ़ ॥
Āpė sĝgar ĝpė bohithĝ ĝpė hī kẖėvĝt.
He Himself is the ocean, He Himself is the boat, and He Himself is the boatman.

Nĝm raṯĝ saṯgurū hai kalijug bohith ho­ė.
The True Guru is imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord; He is the boat in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga.

Page 603, Line 9 ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਉ ਬੇੜਾ ਨਾਉ ਤ੝ਲਹੜਾ ਭਾਈ ਜਿਤ੝ ਲਗਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਜਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥੯॥
नानक नाउ बेड़ा नाउ तढ़लहड़ा भाई जितढ़ लगि पारि जन पाइ ॥४॥९॥
Nĝnak nĝ­o bėṛĝ nĝ­o ṯulhaṛĝ bẖĝ­ī jiṯ lag pĝr jan pĝ­ė. ||4||9||
O Nanak, the Name of the Lord is the boat, and the Name is the raft, O Siblings of Destiny; setting out on it, the Lord's humble servant crosses over the world-ocean. ||4||9||

Bẖa­ojal pĝr uṯĝri­an bẖĝ­ī saṯgur bėṛai cẖĝṛ. ||2||
They got on board the boat of the True Guru, who carried them across the terrifying world-ocean, O Siblings of Destiny. ||2||

Page 1089, Line 16 ਕਾਗਉ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਊਜਲਾ ਲੋਹੇ ਨਾਵ ਨ ਪਾਰ੝ ॥
कागउ होइ न ऊजला लोहे नाव न पारढ़ ॥
Kĝga­o ho­ė na ūjlĝ lohė nĝv na pĝr.
The crow does not become white, and an iron boat does not float across.

Page 1279, Line 3 ਮੂਲ੝ ਰਹੈ ਗ੝ਰ੝ ਸੇਵਿਝ ਗ੝ਰ ਪਉੜੀ ਬੋਹਿਥ੝ ॥
मूलढ़ रहै गढ़रढ़ सेविझ गढ़र पउड़ी बोहिथढ़ ॥
Mūl rahai gur sėvi­ai gur pa­oṛī bohith.
Serving the Guru, his capital is preserved. The Guru is the ladder and the boat.

Page 1417, Line 4 ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰਿ ਬੋਹਿਥੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਚੜੈ ਤੇ ਭਉਜਲਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇ ॥੩੪॥
नानक सतिगढ़रि बोहिथै वडभागी चड़ै ते भउजलि पारि लंघाइ ॥३४॥
Nĝnak saṯgur bohithai vadbẖĝgī cẖaṛai ṯė bẖa­ojal pĝr langẖĝ­ė. ||34||

Without meeting with the True Guru, no one is transformed into gold. The self-willed manmukh sinks like iron, while the boat is very close. ||3||

When the Lord, the Boat to carry us across, bestows His Glance of Grace, even for an instant, the mortal contemplates the Shabad within his heart; unfulfilled sexual desire and unresolved anger are eradicated.
