Saka Chamkaur is a Kissa (episode or short poem) written by Babu Rajab Ali which tells of the Saka (a battle of honor) at Chamkaur where Guru Gobind Singhji, his two eldest sons Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh, and some fourty Sikhs including some of the Panj Pyare, fought a battle against a vastly superior, in numbers, force of allied Gujjars, Ranghhars and Mughals.

A poet whose works knew no bounds of religion or country, Babu Rajab Ali wrote about 1 dozen kissas and long poems about everything from Hindu mythology-- Puran Bhagat, KaullaN, Ramayan, Raja Rattan Sainn, to about 15 kissa covering Muslim heroes and historic figures like Hassan Hussain, Hazrat Mohammad and Dahood Badshah to 15 kissas about Sikh history and heroes like Shaheedi Guru Arjun Dev among others.

He also wrote almost an episode or a kissa about every known Punjabi folktale like Heer Ranjha, Dulla Bhatti, Mirza, and Bhagat Singh. The breadth of the subjects chosen indicates how open hearted and secular a poet Babu Rajab Ali was. Interestingly, most of his kissas related to Hindu heroes and figures were written during his life in Pakistan.

His love for Punjab and Punjabi was unconditional and not bound by walls of religions or nationalities.

Nexus

The Battle of Chamkaur and the events of the days, weeks and months, before and after, are a nexus or central point in Sikh History--the last years of the human Gurus of the Sikhs, the Installation of the SGGS as their Earthly Guru and the epic struggles and sacrifices that the Sikhs would endure during their struggles against the oppressive Mughal Empire and their Indian allies.
