Mata Ganga Ji asked her husband Guru Arjan for the gift of a son, for he granted the wishes of so many Sikhs he would surely answer her’s as well. Guru Arjan told Mata Ganga to go and seek Baba Budha Ji’s blessing. Mata Ganga had her helpers prepare delicious foods and took a procession on chariot to see Baba Budha. When Mata Ji asked Baba Ji’s for his blessing, Baba Ji replied that he was a simple grass cutter and didn’t have such noble ability. Mata Ji the left scene disappointed and narrated the events to her husband. Guru Arjan explained that if she wanted blessings, she should have gone alone; gone to see Baba ji on foot and should have herself lovingly cooked a simple meal to take with her.
She did this the next day and obviously Baba ji was very pleased. He took hold of an onion in the palm of his left hand and said; “Your son will be the Master of Masters, he will be the King of his people and he will break the rule of the tyrants as I break this onion under my fist.” - smash!!
At the age of 11, young Guru Har Gobind was nominated by his father, Guru Arjan as the sixth Guru. The Sikhs celebrate this auspicious day, every year, on July 5th. Guru Arjan sent a message to his son;
“Let him sit fully armed on the throne and maintain an army to the best of his ability”
The first phase of Guru Hargobind’s life was devoted to building the morale of the Sikh community, Guru’s mission was to make the Sikh community self-reliant and brave for the critical times ahead. In addition to participation in Congregational prayer and acceptance of God’s will. The Guru was the first Sikh master to emphasised proficiency in martial arts and also wore the two swords Miri and Piri representing secular sovereignty and spiritual authority. He maintained a fully trained army which later on fought several battles.
