'NIHANG' means WHAT????

I do not know who is writing these articles with the above tone but Sikhs were against all intoxicants of the time that were not deemed spiritual. Yes some will abuse opium and cannabis but noble men did things properly in that time and age. The holy book nor the teachings of the Gurus explicitly prohibit cannabis. It is a relatively new political phenomena to stigmatise, moralise the use of cannabis and opium when it was once a natural legal substance in the West. Real Indians in India see these products of nature differently.

I am not sure the tone of Sikhi Wiki is entirely respectful of the Sikh history and the wars that were fought by truly noble men for the peace of all men.

We do not hold to religion to think we are better or narrow a persons view. Nor are the ancient facets of sikism to be moralised by ignorance or prejudice.

5th guru's first shabad, quoted in the article, does NOT glorify Nihangs. Here is the translation of the complete Shabad :-

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:Pg 391-19

Becoming a king, the mortal wields his royal authority;
oppressing the people, he gathers wealth.
Gathering it and collecting it, he fills his bags.
But God takes it away from him, and gives it to another. ||1||

The mortal is like an unbaked clay pot in water;
indulging in pride and egotism, he crumbles down and dissolves.  ||1||Pause||

Being fearless, he  becomes NIHANG, (meaning unrestrained/rebellious/shameless/defiant)
He does not think of the Creator, who is ever with him.
He raises armies, and collects arms.
But when the breath leaves him, he turns to ashes. ||2||

(Prof sahib Singh in SGGS Darpan uses punjabi words 'Dheeth'& 'Ninsang'for eng words 'unrestrained/... etc' used above),.

He has lofty palaces, mansions and queens,
elephants and pairs of horses, delighting the mind;
he is blessed with a great family of sons and daughters.
But, engrossed in attachment, the blind fool wastes away to death.  ||3||

The One who created him destroys him.
Enjoyments and pleasures are like just a dream.
He alone is liberated, and possesses regal power and wealth,
O Nanak, whom the Lord Master blesses with His Mercy. ||4||35||86||

ਭੰਗ ਪੀਣੇ ਨਿਹੰਗਾ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਹੀ ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਗੱਲ ਅਕਲ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਵੇ। ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀਆਂ ਲਾਡਲੀਆਂ ਫੌਜਾਂ ਅਖਵਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਦੁਮਾਲੇ ਬੰਨ ਕੇ, ਦਿਮਾਗ ਸੁੰਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ਕਮਾ ਰਹੇ ਨੇ। ਗੁਰੂ ਵਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ। ਨਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਅਕਲੋਂ ਪੈਦਲ, ਭੰਗ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਖਾ ਪੀ ਕੇ, ਟਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ। ਗੁਰੂ ਵਲੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਲੜ੍ਹ ਲਗੱਣ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਇਹ ਅਖੌਤੀ ਦਸਮ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਜਿਹੇ ਕੂੜ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ... ਕਿਹੜਾ ਕੰਮ ਇਹ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ??? ਆ ਸੁਣ ਲਉ ਅਖੌਤੀ ਨਿਹੰਗ ਬਾਬਾ ਬਲੀ ਸਿੰਘ, ਬਾਬਾ ਬਕਾਲਾ ਦਲ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੀ ਬਚਨ, ਅਖੇ "ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ" ਦੇਵੀ ਦੀ ਹੈ, "ਕੇਸ" ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਹਨ, "ਕਛਿਹਰਾ" ਹਨੂਮਾਨ ਦਾ ਹੈ, "ਕੜਾ" ਸ਼ਿਵਜੀ ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ "ਕੰਘਾ" ਬਾਬਾ ਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਹੈ....

1. ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਫਿਰਕਾ, ਜੋ ਸੀਸ ਪੁਰ ਫਰਹਰੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਉੱਚਾ ਦਮਾਲਾ, ਚਕ੍ਰ, ਤੋੜਾ, ਖੰਡਾ, ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ, ਗਜਗਾਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਰ ਨੀਲਾ ਬਾਣਾ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਿਹੰਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਰਣ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੰਕਾ ਤਿਆਗਕੇ ਹਰਵੇਲੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦੀ ਪਾਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ.
2. ਬਹੁਤ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬਜ਼ਾਦਾ ਫਤੇ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਵਿਲਾਸ ਕਰਦੇਹੋਏ ਸੀਸ ਤੇ ਦਮਾਲਾ ਸਜਾਕੇ ਦਸ਼ਮੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਹਜੂਰ ਆਏ, ਜਿਸ ਪੁਰ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਫਰਮਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਬਾਣੇ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਨਿਹੰਗਪੰਥ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ.
3. ਕਈ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਜਦ ਕਲਗੀਧਰ ਨੇ ਉੱਚ- ਪੀਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਨੀਲਾ ਬਾਣਾ ਅਗਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾੜਿਆ, ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਇੱਕ ਲੀਰ ਕਟਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਨੀਲਾਂਬਰੀ ਸੰਪ੍ਰਦਾਯ ਚੱਲੀ, ਜੇਹਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਈ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਨ- (ਗੁਪ੍ਰਸੂ)
4. ਭਾਈ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਇਹ ਭੀ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਵਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਿਹੰਗ ਪੰਥ ਚੱਲੇਗਾ, ਯਥਾ-#"ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਬਰ ਦੇਵਤ ਜੋਵੈ।
5. ਪੰਥ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਮੇ ਤਵ ਹੋਵੈ।
6. ਤੁਝ ਸਮ ਬੇਖ¹ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਬਿਸਾਲੀ।
7. ਨਾਮ ਨਿਹੰਗ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਕਾਲੀ." (ਗੁਪ੍ਰਸੂ)
8. ਬਹੁਤ ਨਿਹੰਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਹ ਭੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਸ੍ਵਾਮੀ ਨੇ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੀਸ ਦਮਾਲੇ ਦਾ ਫਂਰਹਰਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਥਾਪਿਆ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੁਪੁਰ- ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਵ੍ਰਿੱਧ ਵਿਵੇਕਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਅਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰੀ ਦੇ ਕਥਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਬਾਬਾ ਨੈਣਾ ਸਿੰਘ (ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਸਿੰਘ) ਨੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਫ਼ੌਜ ਦੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਚੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਪਰ ਦਮਾਲਾ ਸਜਾਕੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਦਾ ਫਰਹਰਾ ਝੁਲਾਇਆ, ਤਾਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਵੇਹਲੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੀ ਚਲਾ ਸਕੇ.
