ਗਰਦਆਰਾ ਸਰੀ ਬਾਰਠ ਸਾਹਿਬ, ਆਦਿ ਗਰੂ, ਗਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਸਪੱਤਰ ਬਾਬਾ ਸਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਕਹਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਹੈ। ਬਾਬਾ ਸਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਜੀ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਸੰਪਰਦਾ ਦੇ ਸੰਚਾਲਕ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਸਾਲ ਇਨਹਾਂ ਬਾਰਠ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਤਾਝ। ਪੰਚਮ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਸਰੀ ਗਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਵੀ 'ਸੱਚ ਧਰਮ' ਦਾ ਪਰਚਾਰ-ਪਰਸਾਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ, ਇਥੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਬਾਰਕ ਚਰਨ ਪਾਝ। ਉਦਾਸੀ ਸੰਪਰਦਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਲਿਬਾਸ ਵਿਚ 'ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪੰਥ' ਦਾ ਪਰਚਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਬੀਤਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੇ ਗਰਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ ਵਿਚ ਦੂਰੀ ਵਧਦੀ ਗਈ। ਇਸ ਦੂਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਘਟਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਬਾਬਾ ਸਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਗਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਬਾਬਾ ਗਰਦਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ। ਗਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਬਾਰਠ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਅਸਥਾਨ 'ਤੇ ਬਾਬਾ ਸਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਪੱਤਰ (ਬਾਬਾ) ਗਰਦਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਸੌਂਪ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਜੋ ਬਾਬਾ ਸਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਸੰਪਰਦਾ ਦੇ ਮਖੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਗਰਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ ਦਾ ਪਰਚਾਰ-ਪਰਸਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੇ।
ਇਸ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਦਾ ਬਹਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਪਰਬੰਧ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਸੰਪਰਦਾ ਪਾਸ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ। ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਰਾਜ ਕਾਲ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਕਝ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਗਰਦਆਰਾ ਬਾਰਠ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਲਗਵਾਈ। ਹਣ ਇਸ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਦਾ ਪਰਬੰਧ ਸ਼ਰੋਮਣੀ ਗਰਦਆਰਾ ਪਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਸਰੀ ਅੰਮਰਿਤਸਰ ਪਾਸ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਦੇ ਨਜ਼ਦੀਕ ਹੀ ਗਰਦਆਰਾ ਬਾਉਲੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇ ਗਰਦਆਰਾ ਥੰਮ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇਖਣ ਯੋਗ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਅਸਥਾਨ 'ਤੇ ਸਰੀ ਗਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਗਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਆਗਮਨ ਗਰਪਰਬ ਤੇ ਬਾਬਾ ਸਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਵੱਡੀ ਪੱਧਰ 'ਤੇ ਮਨਾਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
