Chakki is a Punjabi term that refers to a implement which consists of 2 millstones used to grind corn into flour. It was a tradition before 1950s for most households in Punjab to have a "Chakki". It is a name given to a home appliance or a commercial appliance involving two round stones to mill grains to a powder or flour called Atta in the native tongue. In those olden times the grain used to ground as and when it was required resulting in freshly ground flour which was used to make chappatis (flat bread), rotis, naans or parohtas, etc.
With the advent of commercial flour mills in Punjab, this tradition of having a Chakki in every household just like we have a microwave oven in every house has disappeared.
