Bhai Ram Kanwar recieved Khande-ki-pahul (baptism by the dagger) from Guru Gobind Singh himself, and on that occasion became known as Bhai Gurbaksh Singh. He was a lineal descendant of Bhai Buddha ji, and survived Guru Gobind Singh by 25 years. He dictated the history of the 10th Guru to Bhai Sahib Singh and it are these writings, though no longer extant, that Bhai Santokh Singh based alot of the Suraj Parkash on.

The genealogy of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh is as follows:

Bhai Buddha -> Bhana -> Sarwan -> Jalal -> Jhanda -> Gurditta -> Bhai Ram Kanwar (Gurbaksh Singh)
