He said using caste as surnames is voilation of sikh rehat maryada as he said that sikhism does not support casteism. Guru Gobind Singh gave one caste one surname to all thats singh, But Media still using Makkar as his surname.
 
After his election, Makkar, while thanking Badal, said he would ensure the smooth functioning of the SGPC.
 
The SGPC election this time was considered politically important as Punjab assembly polls are due in Feb 2007 and the SGPC is said to be controlling a large Sikh vote bank.
