Comments from Sikhchic[1]

Ranbir Singh Khalsa: Prof Darshan Singh Ji Khalsa is one of the greatest leaders of Khalsa Panth. His deep knowledge of gurbani and way of viakhya is really amazing. There is a long force of Sikh youths who supports Prof Sahib. We are ready to sacrifice our lives for him. Those fools who excommunicated him from Panth will find their name written on the black pages of the Sikh history.

Binder Mandur (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) Prof. Darshan Singh ji is certainly all that has been said of him in the comments already given above. And, he is more than that. He is today the 'Brave Voice of Reason' - giving direction to the Guru Khalsa Panth to bow to only Guru Granth Sahib as our One and only Guru. This stand takes great courage as the proponents of rival granths and enemies of the panth are many and powerful. I admire him for being brave and taking the bull by the horns - in 1984 he was the vocal conscience of the Sikh Panth - today, he is the voice of reason to take back our religion from the brink of sinking in the abyss of manmatt-ism/ brahminism. He definitely is a Panth Rattan. I wish him well.

Arvinder Singh (London, U.K.) Great article by T. Sher Singh. Touched me deeply and brought back some memories. I think we need to still learn a lot form this great soul who is a great source of wisdom and knowledge. Also, his sacrifices for the Sikh Nation have yet to be fully appreciated. Thanks to the Guru for Professor Sahib.

Taranjit Singh (U.K.) Professor Darshan Singh ji's kirtan has always blown me away. I have only ever heard him live once, and it was beautiful. He truly is a heera of the panth. You are so lucky.

Amrit (India) The question is not only of melody, but also of the amount of preparation one puts into the kirtan and the pleasure one derives from reciting a shabad. This difference puts Prof. Darshan Singh totally on a different plane from the others. Then, there is the question of faith in what the shabad says, and fearlessness in dealing with difficult topics. In recent times, we've enjoyed the presence of a formidable trio - Prof. Darshan Singh, Giani Sant Singh Maskeen and Bhai Jasbir Singh Khannewale - but never benefited from their full potential. I hope that we'll learn as much as we can from those who are still amongst us.

M. S. Uppal (Delhi, India) Really, words are not capable of explaining all the great qualities of this extraordinary man, Prof. Darshan Singh. He sings Gurbani with so much enjoyment and enthusiasm. He also selects shabads and topics which connect well with real, day-to-day events. He is clear and manages to explain the finer points of difficult topics by making them so simple. And, he displays courage and fearlessness, when it is needed. It is a pity that the community has not found a way of benefiting from him more fully. I do believe we would've done better under his leadership, instead of the ones we are suffering from today.

Bobby Khanna (USA) I was looking for some information on Prof. Darshan Singh when I stumbled upon this page. You have portrayed him just the way I too would have liked to portray him: he is indeed a true legend. I am one of his many ardent fans. I say this because I am just like any other, average person who goes to the gurdwara, listens to the shabad kirtan but then, in the end, says to himself: "I wish I could understand it!" When Prof. Darshan Singh does kirtan, all-of-a-sudden all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place and the words begin to make sense. It's like a 'duh' moment, each time. Thank you for posting such a wonderful article and making me feel good.

Davinder Pal singh (Village Khera, Jalandhar, India) Prof. Darshan Singh has truly been an insiration for my family and I. What a wonderful article on this much respected individual of the Sikh community. We are fortunate to have such a personality amongst us who provides us deep insights into Gurbani. I wish we had many more scholars like him.

Satbir Kaur (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) Wow! I also listen to him on TV sometimes on the weekends. He's amazing. I love his facility with language when he does Gurbani viyakhya. He's ... well, I don't have the words ...

Giani Maskeen Singh ji on Prof. Darshan Singh ji Giani Maskeen Singh ji on Prof. Darshan Singh Singh==Previous comments== You are correct. It's a typo.--Gaganji 02:28, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

{reflist} problem.

So the issue is that you have to login to sikhwiki to view the {reflist}, otherwise you are unable to see it.

Can someone help fix it?

Controversy about Dasam Granth

Dear All

I would ask everyone not to get involved in the controversy about the authenticity of parts of the Dasam Granth that has continued in the media for many decades. We know that our Guru is Guru Granth Sahib - The holy Granth offers sufficient guidance for most people to last their life time; so unless you are an academic studying the Dasam Granth; please do not get involved in this discussion on SikhiWiki as this is not the right platform for such things.

This article is to inform others about the person, Professor Darshan Singh Khalsa and not to put fuel on the fire of this controversy. It will be much appreciated if all users can try and take this line; I will be most grateful to you. Kind regards, Hari Singhtalk 14:04, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Re to Hari Singh Ji

Dear Sir

Sikhiwiki is an informative website which deals with true information. We all know that Guru Granth Sahib is our Guru. but it doesn't mean that someone will point finger to other granths of sikhism. they have pointed Dasam Granth then they will point Janamsakhis then Rehatnamas then you never know Guru Granth Sahib too.

Ok Ok i don't have academic study on Dasam Granth Sahib or this person but Wiki websites are purely based on References and How this man So called Darshan Singh could preach such things? The persons who even kicked Akal takhat Hukmnamas many times. When we talk about Aurangzeb we also write his Negative impact on Sikhism so how could we leave such person? (Lucky 17:03, 9 December 2009 (UTC))

Reliable and established information on Sikhi

Dear Lucky ji,

Many thanks for your comments. I accept that Sikhiwiki is a site to provide information about Sikhi but at the same time we are not a research paper; we cannot get involved in controversies about each and every piece of information on the various "sacred writings" and history about our faith; also this is not a newspaper.

We are here to provide only established and confirmed Sikh beliefs and history that has been accepted by the whole of the panth. We are about giving a positive and consistent message of Guru Nanak and not about creating a rift in the panth; or creating doubt in the sangat. The central message of Sikhi is in the Guru Granth Sahib; really, that is the only message that we need to convey to the cyber-sangat.

In deciding any question ask yourself what Guru Nanak would have wanted done; follow only that answer that you get from this analysis. We do not need to give a blow-by-blow detail of every controversy talking place about matters at the fringes of our beliefs and not of real interest to a practising Sikh.

There are a huge amount of issues in the sacred Granth which we have not covered; why go on to the Dasam Granth which was never given any status by any Sikh Guru when a lot of work remains to be done yet in relation of the holy Granth. The Sikh only believes in the writings in the Granth as his or her true spiritual living Guru. If there is doubt about any point mentioned in the holy Granth, then you may refer to the other texts; Dasam Granth; Bhai Gurdas. Bhai Nand Lal, etc. Tell me, what points are there in life where the Guru Granth has not provided an answer?

Further, in my opinion, Bhai Gurdas ji's varan have a higher value as Guru Arjan Dev vetted them as "the key" to the holy Granth. Gurbani was honoured by every Guru; the Granth was respected by all Gurus since its creation by Guru Arjan Dev; Guru Gobind Singh told us the it was the "living Guru" from 1708 onwards. Now which Guru has said anything about the Dasam Granth? None! In fact it was created after 1708; there is no reliable records and so I believe that it would be dangerous for a Sikh to get too involved in this controversy. In fact there is no need to get involved at all; it is an academic struggle for research scholars and should be left for them only.

However; wrongly, it appears to be drawing interest from all sorts of people - people who are looking for something new even when there house is full to the brim. The Gurus call Gurbani "the jewel of life"; why look elsewhere; everything is in the holy Granth; seek it there!

So for us non-academics, the right thing to do is to let the academics carry on with their research. Whatever is decided will have little effect on any practising Sikh as the status of the Dasam Granth can never be enhanced as the holy Granth was by our Gurus; the dasam granth is a compilation of the Sikhs; not a compilation by the Gurus; the first granth was created by the Gurus during their time physically here on earth; the dasam granth was created after them; so this second granth will never have that same "seal of the Guru". Should we then be getting diverted by this debate? Sorry if I have said anything hurtful; it not meant to be negative. Forgive me and please correct me. Kind regards, Hari Singhtalk 09:17, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Sir Ji, There is nothing to hurt in your reply, you said let academics carry on with there research and we should follow Guru Granth Sahib only.

But if this research da silsila will not end then We will not able to read Jaap sahib(Dasam Granth), Tav Parsaad, Chopayi Sahib etc.

Even we would not tell our friends with sure that GUru Gobind Singh wrote Zafarnama.

Guru Granth Sahib is Guru but Dasam Granth is also prestigious Granth of Panth.

If you think it an academic struggle then i think we should stop Ardas too, we should stop singing ""Mittar Pyare nu"".

these people are doing academics on Dasam Granth one day they will start this with GUru Granth Sahib too. (Lucky 17:49, 11 December 2009 (UTC

Is there any proof that the 'Hukumnama declaring him tankhaiya was made before hand by GS Lamba. Later Akal Takht Sahib added date and signatures. ' as stated in the article? Why is sikhiwiki allowing these comments made without references? We can all watch the episodes on jus punjabi tv with the akal takath jathedar, sardar gurcharanjit singh lamba. we all know prof darshan was allowed to clear his points but he didnt. please show references! (comment by user Tojfauj)

The Proof is here

The Proof is here.

Darshan Singh didn't say anything against Guru Gobind Singh, Lamba edited it. I have seen the 70 or so minutes long video. SunnySinghDoad 21:41, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

That is not proof

That is not proof. Just allegations on a blog. The accusation of editing has also been addressed. There is a difference between 'editing' and showing parts. Is it possible to show a more than hour long diwan on a talk show host? All the issues have already been addressed. Many other people have also seen the more than hour long diwan. Sikhiwiki just take a panthic stance and not run without references or proofs. Tojfauj

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Recently, he got Tankhya from Takhat Jathedars for not presenting himself before them. Due to his ego he did not appear before jathedars and remain sat in Akal Takhat. He wanted that decision should be before people, but this maryada is not following by takhat since 10 years. The Hukumnama declaring him tankhaiya was made before hand by GS Lamba. Later Akal Takht Sahib added date and signatures. This shows that there is a big conspiracy to shut the mouths of people speaking up against Dasam Granth. He want that Judge should come before Mujlim to solve the case. He also attacked nitnem banis.

It is extremely distasteful, biased and insulting. Which Takhat Jathedaars are you talking about? They are masands who have encroached upon our Takhats with help of Badal and company. Those Jathedars who follow manmat and have let Bachchitar Natak a.k.a Dasam Granth be kept at par with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in Patna Sahib and Hazur Sahib. These Jathedaars do not have the courage or the leadership ability to lead the Panth. We are not cattle who would follow orders of these Masands. We are Guru's Sikhs and will fight against this attempt to degrade a fellow Gursikh.

I did not find an edit button to modify the description otherwise I would have done it myself. Request you to refrain from publishing such biased content. Please remove these distasteful comments.

Dear Ishmeet Singh ji, Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh

Many thanks for you email and comment on the article - Professor Darshan Singh Khalsa.

However, emails are not the normal way of making a comment on any article on a Wiki. Please, in future can you register on the website and then make your comments on the discussion page which is available at the article page. That way the person who made those changes will be able to address you directly if they wish.

Bhai sahib, as you know many users add to the website on a daily basis and the Professor has many controversial involvements surrounding him. In this regards, I have searched the website and refer you to the links at the end of my email.

I do not know which user has added this paragraph but I am sure that this has been taken from a reliable source based on my brief research of cyber-space. I agree that the guardians of the Takhat may not be following the pathic norms and that is why a fair discussion is needed on SikhiWiki so everyone using the site can be involved.

I will transfer your comments to the discussion page and add my comments there. Please check the link after a few hours:

SikhiWiki's position regarding SGGS

I would like to make it very clear that I completely agree with you that the Supreme position of Guru Granth Sahib cannot be challenged. The position of Sikhiwiki is that Guru Granth Sahib is the ONLY current Sikh Guru (spiritual guide) of all Sikhs and anyone else who wishes to take advantage of this unique Granth; nothing else can match this scripture. Absolutely NO OTHER scripture can approach the high status of this holy Granth.

It is accepted that we do respect other text like Bhai Gurdas ji dea Varan, Dasam Granth, Bhai Nand Lal's hymns, etc. but they all come second when compared to the holy Granth. No other text should be accorded the same high respect that we give to our Guru; I believe it is contrary to Gurmat to give the same treatment to any other text apart from the holy Granth.

It must be remembered that the holy Granth was the only scripture which was created, nurtured and endorsed whole-heartedly by our Ten Sikh Gurus; no other text has such unique pedigree and such unity in its creation! The Dasam Granth on the other hand was created by Sikhs not by the Gurus! - Guru Gobind Singh did not create the Dasam Granth; it cannot have the same high reverence in the minds of the Sikhs as the holy Granth; we respect the Dasam Granth but it is not our Guru - It is another guide like others - it is not unique like the holy Granth!

Gur Fateh ji,

Thank you veerji for posting the English translation of the letter written by Prof. Darshan Singh. --

Thank you. Hari Singh and Allenwalla ji.

Gur fateh veerji, Thank you for locking this page. It becomes a mere game of cat and mouse to keep this page in check. Is there a way to fix the references, as they don't show up anymore. Thank you ji. --ਇਕਾ ਬਾਣੀ ਇਕ੝ ਗ੝ਰ੝ ਇਕੋ ਸਬਦ੝ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ (eikaa baanee eik gur eiko sabadh veechaar.) 19:04, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Please Update the Following Paragraph

Prof. Darshan Singh Khalsa (also referred to as Singh Sahib - his title when in seva at Shri Akal Takhat) is a well known Sikh keertani (performer of Kirtan), lecturer (katha performer) and a prolific author. An ex-Jathedar of the Shri Akal Takhat Sahib, he is married to Bibi Manjit Kaur and currently resides in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Sangat usually refers to him as professor due to his past experience as a teacher of raag kirtan, in addition to his style of discourse. < ref name=campbio2010>Prof. D. S. Khalsa, public presentation, August, 2010</ref > He is a strong supporter of the Guru Granth Sahib as the only Guru (spiritual guide) of the Sikhs and does not support the idea of any other Granth being given the same stage or prominence as the Sikh holy Granth.

All References are From Prof. Darshan Singh's academy and his follower academies

Why not you attach Hukamnama of Akal Takhat here? (Lucky 15:46, 16 October 2010 (EDT))

I agree.

I agree with Hpt Lucky.

I think we should also attach the letter's from the Jathedar's about his Tankha. They are facts behind the story. People need to know what they said exactly. --ਇਕਾ ਬਾਣੀ ਇਕ੝ ਗ੝ਰ੝ ਇਕੋ ਸਬਦ੝ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ (eikaa baanee eik gur eiko sabadh veechaar.) 05:19, 21 October 2010 (EDT)

By Dilpreet Singh to Sikhiwiki

WJKK WJKF bhai sahib i dont think its wise to say something here as there is so much talk going on already but still couldn't resist it. we should respect the akal takht hukamnama this much atleast that professor darshan singh shouldn't be refered as khalsa anymore. and no matter what those people are still the jathedars not some officials and they got this jathedari through the same seva professor darshan singh has done. as per dasam granth, most of the people only hear one side's opinion and that is professor darshan singh's who likes to express it in his own way ofcourse. all those questions these anti-dasam people bring up have already been answered but dont know it is so hard for them to accept it. just last thing, dasam granth was not created after 1708 but it was brought up together after 1708 and that too as we all know by shahid bhai mani singh ji who was more sikh and singh and khalsa by anyone we know today. bhul chuk di khima, WJKK WJKF

Guru Manyo Granth - Darshan Singh's Admirer, to Dilpreet Singh

Did Akal Takhat bestow the name "Khalsa" onto you?

Gur Fateh Dilpreet Singh ji,

Akal Takhat is merely an association of maintaining the administration. It was never bestowed as a judiciary committee upon the Sikh Panth. The only judiciary committee that exists is the Sikh Panth; no few mortals can make those decisions, that is considered a dictatorship.

Akat Takhat cannot TAKE anything from the Sikh for which it has not bestowed. Akat Takhat cannot take away your Sikhi from you, that is a naive and frankly "un-Sikh" proclamation. If you have a problem with Prof. Darshan Singh Khalsa, don't endorse him or go to his programs.

Please do not try to put powers into an association that does not need any.

If the Akal Takhat had bestowed you or I "Khalsa" behind our names then it's their every right to take it from me, if that's their authority. I signed up to the Guru Granth Sahib's judiciary committee, and Karam is the best judge, jury and executioner that is needed.

Gur Fateh ji.
