1 Heading 'Mool Mantar' be replaced with 'ONE ETERNAL TRUTH'

unproven anecdotes etc. are not needed

The real power of the japji is in the message, NOT IN ANY CHANTING without reflection to the meaning. The gurus did not intend on the japji to be recited as a Hindu Mantar. I am deleting the hogwash entries regarding the "sound" of the words changing someone at the cellular or molecular level.

These may be unproven anecdotes for you but many have experienced the power of sound - The Guru refers to Naad, which stands for sound or vibration in Gurbani at many junctures; why do you think the Guru mention the importance of sound?

In Japji the Guru says: "The Guru's Word is the Sound-current of the Naad; the Guru's Word is the Wisdom of the Vedas; the Guru's Word is all-pervading." (SGGS p 2) and in the same vein, the Guru says "Gurbani is the sound current of the Naad, the Vedas, everything." (SGGS p 879) and yet again "The Gurmukh vibrates the Naad, the sound current of the Guru's Bani" (SGGS p 1058). All these tuks tell us about the connection of Naad and Gurbani.

Further, Gurbani informs us that: "Sing the Glorious Praises of the Immaculate True Lord forever, and the Immaculate Sound-current of the Naad shall vibrate within. (2)" (SGGS p 121) Here we can see how the Guru has placed importance of singing the praises of the Lord and how this gives rise to the internal Naad.

And later in the Guru Granth Sahib, the Guru tells us: "This is my life's purpose, to sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, and listen to the vibrations of the sound current of the Naad." (SGGS p 818) how the reciting and singing of kirtan is important and life's purpose!

Finally. in the following tuk, the Guru explains how the ears that cannot hear the sound current can be considered deaf! - "The ears which do not hear the Sound-current of the Naad - those ears might just as well be plugged." (SGGS p 1362)

Mantar Mool does appear - I don't knoe if this helps?

Respected Amita Singh ji, WKWF

The word mantar mool and mool mantar do?? appear in SGGS from a very quick scan via Srigranth (please confirm in original Gurmukhi as I have not checked this??):

Page 156, Line 3 -- Guru Nanak Dev O mind, there is only the One medicine, mantra and healing herb - center your consciousness firmly on the One Lord. a-ukhaDh mantar mool man aykai jay kar darirh chit keejai ray.

Page 675, Line 1 -- Guru Arjan Dev The Mul Mantra, the Root Mantra, is the only cure for the mind; I have installed faith in God in my mind. a-ukhaDh mantar mool man aykai man bisvaas parabh Dhaari-aa.

Page 1040, Line 19 -- Guru Nanak Dev Chanting the Mool Mantra, and the Name of the Lord, the source of nectar, says Nanak, I have found the Perfect Lord. ||5|| mool mantar har naam rasaa-in kaho naanak pooraa paa-i-aa. ||5||

I don't knoe if this makes a difference to your view on this, but I think that most people recognise what the "mool mantar" is when we mention these words. I don't think they would recognise anything if you said "ONE TRUTH ETERNAL"

I think sometimes these old names stick and it is very difficult to change the mind set.

A Sikh is always learning

Brother Amita Singh Ji,

I don't think I can be a guide to anyone - I have no qualities - only the Gurus are our guide and totally dependable. We as Sikhs are all on a path of eternal learning. So please I have no merits in this sphere; only by the blessing to our Guru can we find the correct path. So I think that it only thro Gurbani and by dwelling on the Guru's words can we move forward in life. All the spiritual gifts are from the Bani. -- Hari Singh 19:48, 5 Oct 2005 (Central Daylight Time)
