Sayth Nanak on Dance Part-II: Relevant Extracts from Prof Sahib Singh's DARPAN

Angg 74: Dance through the endless cycle of death and rebirth

• ਮੈਂ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਹਿਲਵਾਨ ਸਾਂ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਦੁਮਾਲੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ। I was an amateurish wrestler of Lord TRUTH, who through Gurbani's grace became a high ranking professional.

• ਜਗਤ-ਅਖਾੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਆ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ , ਤੇ (ਇਸ ਅਖਾੜੇ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਬੈਠਾ ਵੇਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।17। Spectators across the world have gathered and Lord TRUTH is presiding over all.

• ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਢੋਲ ਵੱਜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਨਗਾਰੇ ਵੱਜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭਜ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ) ਪਹਿਲਵਾਨ ਆ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, (ਪਿੜ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ, ਜਗਤ-ਅਖਾੜੇ ਵਿਚ) ਫੇਰੀਆਂ ਲੈ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।Loud music and heavy drums are beating (i.e all are indulging in a rat race for wealth). Wrestlers have gathered and they are posing/showing off their strength by going around the ring.

• ਮੇਰੀ ਪਿੱਠ ਉੱਤੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਥਾਪੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ (ਵਿਰੋਧੀ) ਪੰਜੇ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਜੁਆਨ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਲਏ ।18।Lord TRUTH lovingly patted on my back and I arrested my five opponents(Sexual lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego) in one go.

• ਸਾਰੇ (ਨਰ ਨਾਰ) ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਏ ਹਨ, ਪਰ (ਇੱਥੇ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਪਰਲੋਕ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ ।All have landed on this earth in human form, however they will be reborn in varied non human forms.

• ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਇੱਥੋਂ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ) ਨਫ਼ਾ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । Those who walk the path shown by Gurbani leave this world with Lord TRUTH's TRUE Name to their credit.

• ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਭੀ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਹਿਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਭਲੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਵੀ ਮੰਦ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ।19।However those who live life chasing their own will loose even their their principal credit of good deeds.

• ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਰੰਗ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਚਿਹਨ-ਚੱਕਰ ਹਨ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ, ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੂੰ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ)।O Lord TRUTH! though you have no specific color or physical attributes still you are clearly seen through the world around us.

• ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰੈ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।Your worshipers listen to your magnanimity and remember you.

• ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈਂ । You are a treasure of knowledge and wisdom.

• ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।20।Your Sikhs remain engrossed in your love.

• ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ) ਫਾਹੀ ਕੱਟ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।O Nanak! Gurbani has broken my shackles of love for worldly wealth and now I am always engrossed in your service and worship.

• (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਢੂੰਢ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ) ਮੌਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਇਸ ਜਗਤ-ਅਖਾੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਫਿਰਾਂਗਾ।21।2।29।Through Gurbani's grace and after a thorough search I have acquired an opportunity of Lord TRUTH's worship. Hereafter I will not have to dance around this worldly wrestling arena of death and rebirth.

Angg 121 through 124: 'TRUE Dance Form' Defined

• ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਗਤੀ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਹੁਲਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਧਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ) । Progressively as one gets committed to Lord TRUTH's worship, his heart(not body) swings with ecstasy,

• (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਸਧਾਰੀਆ ਰਾਸ ਪਾਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਰਾਗ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।3।as if a Hindu worshiper is physically dancing before his Deity. Thus detached from the worldly wealth and engrossed in Gurbani, he partakes in true 'dance form'.

• ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਸੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਟਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤੱਕ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ । ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੀ ਨਚਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਛਲ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।4। However, one who gets into a trance, yells and throws tantrums, is in the grip of love for wealth; that is what makes him dance. The messenger of intellectual death shall hunt him down. The deceit within makes him suffer in pain.

• ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰੇ ਸਾਜ਼ ਵਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਮਾਣ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਪਿੜ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਨੱਚਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਨਾਚ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ) ।6। Further, one who plays musical instruments and dances to their tune, is neither listening to Gurbani, nor can he grasp any wisdom contained therein. Tied in the shackles of love for wealth, he suffers in pain.(through such a dance he can not relish any peace within himself).

• ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ । My soul is a sacrifice to one who gets committed to Gurbani and thus makes his life worthwhile.

• ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ) ਹੁਲਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ।1।ਰਹਾਉ। Such a person who is TRUE to Gurbani, Sings and partakes in 'True Dance Form'

Angg 142: Yearnings for power, Wealth and Ego Make One 'Dance Shamelessly'

• (ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਬੰਦਗੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।He alone is considered truly alive, whose mind is filled with the Lord TRUTH. O Nanak! no one else devoid of Lord TRUTH's Name(Gurbani) is alive.

• ਜੇ ਨਾਮ-ਵਿਹੂਣਾ (ਵੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ) ਜੀਊਂਦਾ (ਭੀ) ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਏਥੋਂ) ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕੁਝ (ਏਥੇ) ਖਾਂਦਾ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰਾਮ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । Devoid of Lod TRUTH's Name(Gurbani), one who merely lives shall depart in dishonor. Everything he eats is impure.

• ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ, ਮਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਬੇ-ਸ਼ਰਮ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨੱਚਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਭਾਵ, ਮੱਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਕੜਦਾ ਹੈ)One, who is sunk into lust for power and wealth, gets intoxicated with these pleasures and dances about(makes a grand show of his ego and selfishness) shamelessly.

• ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਲੁੱਟਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।1। O Nanak! such a person gets deluded and defrauded. He leaves the world with utmost disgrace.

Angg 159: TRUTH Can Not be Realized Through Reckless Dancing

• ਮੂਰਖ ਲੋਕ ਰਾਸਾਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਗਟ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਰਾਸਾਂ ਪਾਣ ਵੇਲੇ) ਨੱਚ ਨੱਚ ਕੇ ਟੱਪਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।The fools perform devotional worship by showing off. They dance recklessly and jump around. However, this way (consequent to their egoistic and self willed acts) they only suffer in terrible pain .

• ਨੱਚਣ ਟੱਪਣ ਨਾਲ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। TRUTH can not be realized through reckless dancing.

• ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਵਲੋਂ, ਹਉਮੈ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।3। He alone can realize the blessings of Lord TRUTH, who gets committed to obedience of Gurbani after killing his (ego and) 'self' (will).

Angg 169: My mind should dance to the tune of 'TRUE dance form'(Angg 121 through 124)

• ਹੇ ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਦਾਤਿ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼। O Merciful! O savior of those who seek Your Sanctuary! I beg of You; please bless me with your Name (Gurbani).

• ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖ ਤਾਂ ਜੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਸਦਾ ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੇ (ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਰਹੇ) ।3।Make me a slave of your slaves, so that my mind dances to the tune of 'TRUE dance form' (love for you and your Name).
