Incarnation 19

ਅਥ ਚੰਦ੝ਰ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਨੰ ॥

Now begins the description of Chandra Incarnation:

ਸ੝ਰੀ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਜੀ ਸਹਾਇ ॥

Let Sri Bhaguti Ji (The Primal Lord) be helpful.

ਦੋਧਕ ਛੰਦ ॥ दोधक छंद ॥ DODHAK STANZA

ਫੇਰਿ ਗਨੋ ਨਿਸਰਾਜ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥ ਜੈਸ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਮ੝ਰਾਰਾ ॥

Now I think about Chandrama, how did Vishnu manifest as Chandra incarnation?

ਬਾਤ ਪ੝ਰਾਤਨ ਭਾਖਿ ਸ੝ਨਾਊਂ ॥ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਕਬਿ ਕ੝ਲ ਸਰਬ ਰਿਝਾਊਂ ॥੧॥

I an narriating a very ancient story, hearing which all the poets will be pleased.1.

ਦੋਧਕ ॥

DODHAK STANZA

ਨੈਕ ਕ੝ਰਿਸਾ ਕਹ੝ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਭੂਖਨ ਲੋਗ ਮਰੈ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ॥

There was not even a little farming anywhere and the people were dying with hunger.

ਅੰਧਿ ਨਿਸਾ ਦਿਨ ਭਾਨ੝ ਜਰਾਵੈ ॥ ਤਾਤੇ ਕ੝ਰਿਸ ਕਹੂੰ ਹੋਨ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

The nights were full of darkness and during the day the sun blazed, therefore nothing grew anywhere.2.

ਲੋਗ ਸਭੈ ਇਹ ਤੇ ਅਕ੝ਲਾਨੇ ॥ ਭਾਜਿ ਚਲੇ ਜਿਮ ਪਾਤ ਪ੝ਰਾਨੇ ॥

For this reason all the beings were agitated and they were destroyed like the old leaves.

ਭਾਂਤ ਹੀ ਭਾਂਤ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ॥ ਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਪ੝ਰਸੰਨਿ ਭਝ ਗ੝ਰਦੇਵਾ ॥੩॥

Everyone worshipped, adored and served in various ways and the Supreme Preceptor (i.e. the Lord) was pleased.3.

ਨਾਰਿ ਨ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੈਂ ਨਿਜ ਨਾਥੰ ॥ ਲੀਨੇ ਹੀ ਰੋਸ੝ ਫਿਰੈਂ ਜੀਅ ਸਾਥੰ ॥

(This was the situation at that time) that the wife did no service to her husband and ever remained displeased with him.

ਕਾਮਿਨਿ ਕਾਮ੝ ਕਹੂੰ ਨ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥ ਕਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਊ ਕਾਮ੝ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੪॥

The lust did not overpower the wives and in the absence of sexual instinct, all the works for the growth of the world had ended.4.

ਤੋਮਰ ਛੰਦ ॥

TOMAR STNAZA

ਪੂਜੇ ਨ ਕੋ ਤ੝ਰੀਯਾ ਨਾਥ ॥ ਝਂਠੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਜੀਅ ਸਾਥ ॥

No wife worshipped her husband and always remained in her pride.

ਦ੝ਖਵੈ ਨ ਤਿਨ ਕਹ੝ ਕਾਮ ॥ ਤਾਤੇ ਨ ਬਿਨਵਤ ਬਾਮ ॥੫॥

She had no grief and did not suffer because of the sexual instinct, therefore, there was no desire for supplication in them.5.

ਕਰ ਹੈ ਨ ਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ॥ ਪੂਜੈ ਨ ਗ੝ਰ ਗ੝ਰਦੇਵ ॥

Neither she served her husband, nor worshipped and abored the preceptors.

ਧਰ ਹੈਂ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਧਯਾਨ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਹੈਂ ਨ ਨਿਤ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥੬॥

Neither she meditated on Lord-God nor she ever took bath.6.

ਤਬ ਕਾਲ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਬ੝ਲਾਇ ॥ ਬਿਸਨੈ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥

Then the Immanent Lord called Vishnu and giving instruction to him, told, him that,

ਸਸਿ ਕੋ ਧਰਹ੝ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥ ਨਹੀ ਆਨ ਬਾਤ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੭॥

Without taking any other thing into consideration, he should manifest himself as Chandra incarnation.7.

ਤਬ ਬਿਸਨ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਇ ॥ ਕਰਿ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਹੀ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

Then Vishnu bowing his head said with folded hands,

ਧਰਿਹੋਂ ਦਿਨਾਂਤ ਵਤਾਰ ॥ ਜਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਜਗਤ ਕ੝ਮਾਰ ॥੮॥

I shall assume the form of Chandra incarnation, so that the beauty may prosper in the world.8.

ਤਬ ਮਹਾਂ ਤੇਜ ਮ੝ਰਾਰਿ ॥ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਸ੝ ਚੰਦ੝ਰ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥

Then the extremely glorious Vishnu manifested himself as Chandra (incarnation),

ਤਨ ਕੈ ਮਦਨ ਕੋ ਬਾਨ ॥ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ਤ੝ਰੀਯਨ ਕਹ੝ ਤਾਨਿ ॥੯॥

And he shot continuously the arrows of the god of love towards women.9.

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਭਈ ਤ੝ਰੀਯ ਦੀਨ ॥ ਸਭ ਗਰਬ ਹ੝ਝ ਗਯੋ ਛੀਨ ॥

Because of this the women became modest and all their pride was shattered.

ਲਾਗੀ ਕਰਨ ਪਤਿ ਸੇਵ ॥ ਯਾਤੇ ਪ੝ਰਸੰਨਿ ਭਝ ਦੇਵ ॥੧੦॥

They again began to perform service to their husbands and by this all the gods were pleased.10.

ਬਹ੝ ਕ੝ਰਿਸਾ ਲਾਗੀ ਹੋਨ ॥ ਲਖਿ ਚੰਦ੝ਰਮਾ ਕੀ ਜੌਨ ॥

Seeing Chandra, people began to do farming to a large extent.

ਸਭ ਭਝ ਸਿਧ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥ ਇਮ ਭਯੋ ਚੰਦ੝ਰ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥੧੧॥

All the thoughts-out works were accomplished, in this manner, Chandra incarnation came into being.11.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHAUPAI.

ਇਮ ਹਰਿ ਧਰਾ ਚੰਦ੝ਰ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥ ਬਢਿਯੋ ਗਰਬ ਲਹਿ ਰੂਪ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

In this way Vishnu manifested himself as Chandra incarnation, but Chandra also became egoistic about his own beauty;

ਆਨ ਕਿਸੂ ਕਹ੝ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਲਿਆਯੋ ॥ ਤਾਤੇ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਲੰਕ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥੧੨॥

He also abandoned the meditation of any other, therefore he was also blemished.12.

ਭਜਤ ਭਯੋ ਅੰਬਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਰਾ ॥ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕੀਯ ਮ੝ਨਿ ਰੋਸ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

He was engrossed with the wife of the sage (Gautam), which made th sage highly infuriated in his mind;

ਕਿਸਨਾਰਜ੝ਨ ਮ੝ਰਿਗ ਚਰਮ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥ ਤਿਹ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਲੰਕ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥੧੩॥

The sage struck him with his deer-skin, which created a mark on his body and he was thus blemished.13.

ਸ੝ਰਾਪ ਲਗਿਯੋ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਮ੝ਨ ਸੰਦਾ ॥ ਘਟਤ ਬਢਤ ਤਾ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਚੰਦਾ ॥

With the curse of the sage he keeps on decreasing and increasing;

ਲਜਿਤ ਅਧਿਕ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਮੋ ਭਯੋ ॥ ਗਰਬ ਅਖਰਬ ਦੂਰ ਹ੝ਝ ਗਯੋ ॥੧੪॥

Because of this event, he felt extremely ashamed and his pride was extremely shattered.14.

ਤਪਸਾ ਕਰੀ ਬਹ੝ਰਿ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਲਾ ॥ ਕਾਲ ਪ੝ਰਖ ਪ੝ਨਿ ਭਯੋ ਦਿਆਲਾ ॥

He then performed austerities for a long time, by which the Immanent Lord became merciful towards him;

ਛਈ ਰੋਗ ਤਿਹ ਸਕਲ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥ ਭਯੋ ਸੂਰ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥੧੫॥

His destructive ailment decayed and by the Grace of the Supreme Immanent Lord, he attained a higher status than the Sun.15.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੝ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੝ਰ ਨਾਟਕ ਗ੝ਰੰਥੇ ਚੰਦ੝ਰ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਉਨੀਸਵੋਂ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤ੝ ਸ੝ਭਮ ਸਤ੝॥੧੯॥
