Baba Narinder Singh - “Main Kutta Baba Nand Singh Da, Dipti Mera Naam”

From Brigadier Partap Singh Ji Jaspal

Baba Narinder Singh Ji, my father, hailed from an aristocratic family of Ahluwalia Chieftains of Kapurthala State. He was the son of Sardar Sahib Sardar Suchet Singh, Police Chief of Kapurthala state, and grandson of Sardar Sahib Sardar Isher singh, Representative of Kapurthala state with the British. Both his father and grandfather held high positions of honour, eminence and dignity in the erstwhile Kapurthala state. Our grandfather was a renowned and gallant police officer and had won a number of gallantry awards including The King's Police Medal for gallantry. It filled my father with pride to say that in his profession he derived all inspiration from our grandfather.

Father was one of the most highly decorated police officers for gallantry at the time of partition of the country No account could possibly be kept of the numerous deadly encounters he had with most notorious dacoits. In addition to other gallantry awards, he had been awarded the King's Police Medal for gallantry and again a Bar to the Kings Police Medal also for gallantry. This was the highest award for gallantry in the police. His name had become a legend in Punjab because of his exploits and adventures in dacoit hunting and a terror for dacoits. In many instances, on merely learning, that he had surrounded them the most dreaded and notorious dacoits had laid down their arms and surrendered immediately.

Once I happened to be traveling with him in a jeep at midnight on the Ferozepur-Ludhiana road. From a distance he noticed in the light of the jeep a villager crossing the road. He stopped the vehicle and called the person. He made certain enquiries from him with regard to his credentials. The man gave his name and that of his village and further told that he was proceeding to his fields to avail his turn for water. Father proceeded but again stopped the jeep and beckoned that person, and asked him about the zaildar of that village. The man fumbled. He was covering himself with a blanket. Suddenly he took out a revolver and pointed it at father who with unique presence of mind thundered and roared like a lion and the revolver fell from the hands of that person. Father always used to keep his loaded revolver on his right side, and instantly that was pointed at that person. He was tied and bundled into the jeep and was later identified as a wanted notorious criminal. When father had thundered and roared like a lion, we all were also shaken from our roots.

He was blessed with highly magnetic, impressive and charming personality, which radiated majestic influence. His subordinates, equals and superiors and all others who came in contact with him confronted him with compelling reverence. His life was saga of gallant feats and spiritual fervour.

In 1942, when he was standing alone in the holy presence of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, Mahan Babaji while looking deep into father’s eyes had said-

Jaam Guru Hoey Val
Lakh Baheyan Kia Kejay
Sri Guru Granth Sahib (1399)

Thus Mahan Babaji had assured father of His Eternal Presence, company and protection against thousands of adversaries in all challenging situations.

Before the partition of 1947, he was posted at Rawalpindi. Firmly established in the Lord, fearless of death, totally dedicated and wedded to his profession, he was tireless and full souled in action.

With this fire of immortality in his radiant eyes, he performed great heroic acts of valour at Rawalpindi. He came to be widely known there as the ‘Savior of Rawalpindi’.

Mr. Scot, Deputy Inspector General of police, Rawalpindi, Range, once remarked to me that he had never seen a more gallant police officer than my father in his whole service. A brief account of some of these incidents will be given in the next issue. Unique and wonderful was the Eternal Presence and Glory of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, with His beloved spiritual son, in every challenging situation.

He was well known for his charitable disposition, religious fervour and hospitality. Not a single needy person ever went away from him disappointed. After partition, when many refugees known to him and members of the Sangat of Babaji approached him for help, he provided all help to them. Many of them turned up penniless and without any warm clothes. I still remember there was no blanket left in our house for our personal use because everything was given away to the needy. He was the Police Chief of Ludhiana District then.

Sri Guru Granth Sahib embodies the divine utterances of the Lord Himself and whoever hears these holy hymns in His Living Presence, is rewarded and blessed.

Faith in Sri Guru Granth Sahib has a great redeeming and dynamic force. The powerful Nectar, which flowed from the most compassionate glance of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib, turned the greatest sinners into seers/sages/gods. The same Nectar continues to flow even today from His Eyes due to His Eternal presence in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Powerful rays of Love beaming out of His Holy Glance, engulf everything that comes in its way and sweep, and are sufficient for the liberation of the soul.

Father’s mind was always saturated with this sterling faith and devotion and the Guru’s abiding presence with him wrought wonderful miracles in his life.

His whole life sparkles in all its fullness. It sparkles with illustrious, heroic valour, it sparkles with rare devotion and it sparkles in its full divine glory.

The First Divine Encounter

It was in the year 1935 that once Sardar Gurdial Singh Thapar, a well known Rais of Ludhiana and intimately known to my father, impressed by my father's divine bent of mind mentioned about Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. He further disclosed that sometimes Babaji pays a visit there and stays at Rambagh, a garden located on Ludhiana-Jagroan road.

My father requested him to take father along with him on Babaji's next visit to that place. One day Sardar Gurdial Singh Thapar came to my father and informed him about Babaji's arrival. My respected father immediately took couple of baskets of fruits and proceeded along with Sardar Gurdial Singh Thapar to Rambagh for Darshans.

Near a Talai in the Garden, Babaji was in Samadhi and Holy Shabad Kirtan was in progress. A large congregation was rapturously bathing in the overflowing Grace of Babaji's physical presence. The whole atmosphere was surcharged with Divinity.

My esteemed father and S. Gurdial Singh Ji after paying their obeisance sat close to Babaji. After sometime Babaji opened His Holy Eyes and looked around. Seeing my father His Holy Eyes got riveted on him. Then Babaji asked S. Gurdial Singh about my father, and he accordingly introduced him with reverence and humility.

After that, Babaji took leave of the Sangat in His characteristic humility and proceeded inside the place where arrangements for His stay were made. My father also followed Him along with S. Gurdial Singh. Babaji inclined on a cot, and my father and S. Gurdial Singh sat close to the Lotus Feet of Babaji.

Again, Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj focused His Holy Eyes on my father and conveyed a deep Divine Message that only the recipient could feel and understand. It was recognition and discovery of someone most intimate, nearest and dearest one.

Nectar was flowing from the 'Pools of Nectar’, which the Holy Eyes of Babaji were, and that Nectar was drenching father's body, mind and soul.

Father, who intimately knew most of the Saints of his time, at once realized that he only belonged to Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj from times immemorial.

Completely dissolved in the Nectar of the Grace of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj he reached home. Love-smitten father proclaimed to my mother and all of us, with all the joy and cheer at his command that he had discovered and found the God - The Guru Nanak.

I had never seen father so happy before. He kept on telling about his visit and holy darshan of Mahan Babaji, for quite sometime that day. He had totally forgotten and lost himself in the Eternal Glory of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

While doing Holy Kirtan, my younger sister Bibi Bholan Rani, in a state of madness of love, used to invariably sing:

Aseen Babey Labh Laey Jee Sara Jag Dhundh Ke

We have discovered Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj after scanning the whole world.

This first encounter was a most wonderful spiritual miracle. The very first time my father saw and met Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj his whole being was possessed by Him, possessed by His All-Enveloping Splendor, by His All-Penetrating Divinity.

Hunger for God and hunger for worldliness cannot co-exist. A lover of God does not crave for worldly things and pleasures of the senses. He wants the Lord and the Lord alone to the exclusion of everything else. He is totally immersed in all- absorbing love of the beloved Lord.

Saachi Preet Na Tuti Piarey Jug Jug Rahi Samaey
 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (432)

Divine Love of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj penetrated deep into the heart, the very soul of father and thereafter he could think of nothing else. He pined day and night to rush to Him and see Him again and again. He intensely felt and experienced within him, a burning love for Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. It was continuity from births immemorial through Eternity.

Such was the wonderful expressions of love we heard from our respected father after his first meeting with Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

Miracle of Holy Name

It was in Chotta Thaath after the ‘Samapti’ of evening programme that Mahan Babaji got up from His Asan and took leave of the sangat with His characteristic humility. As Babaji came out, Father after picking up the cloth chappals of Mahan Babaji placed those in front of His holy feet. Mahan Babaji while putting His holy feet in the chappals placed His hand on one of the shoulders of father for support. Babaji’s bare wrist happened to touch father’s ear. An indescribable melody of ‘Waheguru’ from each and every pore (rome) of Babaji’s bare wrist struck father’s ear and rushed deep into his soul giving him a sublime taste of Nam Ras.

Close physical proximity, Babaji’s holy hand resting on father’s shoulder, gentle bare forearm of Babaji touching father’s left ear, melodious chanting of Waheguru issuing forth from every pore of Babaji’s forearm sent father in maddening ecstasy. Embrosial Nam bursting forth from every pore of Babaji’s Eternal Being got enshrined in father’s heart and filled his whole being with spiritual joy. Father stumbled on his feet and was about to fall but Babaji kindly held him up. Thus blessed, with his heart completely illumined and intoxicated with Amrit Nam, father looked up in deep gratitude, and was further blessed with a most wonderful glowing spark of Grace in the elevating glance of Mahan Babaji.

This elixir of nam emanating from every pore of the embodied Lord seeped deeply into father’s heart and soul and filled him with ever lasting Bliss.

About this unique experience, father once told me that in hearing the divine melody of Amrit Nam from the holy pores of Babaji’s body, he had experienced a real taste of nam ras - atam ras - prem ras. He had felt as if he had touched the very source of Amrit Nam and he had been completely drenched in the Ocean of the Nectar of Nam. He further remarked that Amrit Nam itself had incarnated as Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj and His holy form was the Viswa Swaroop of Amrit Nam, and all the seven crore pores of His holy body were continuously chanting the Divine NAM every moment of His whole life.

As narrated earlier, each pore of the body of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was vibrant with the immortal Nam; a strange and miraculous phenomenon. It was supreme expression of the Gupt and immortal Nam of God otherwise unheard of and unseen. The Supreme Divine Truth was in its most wonderful and perfect play in a human garb. His physical body was the very form of immortal Nam; it was an indivisible part of Truth and Eternal - Light. His divine body was the greatest source of blessedness for the whole creation. Such was the blazing and divine personality of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. Mighty rays of the immortal Nam radiated from every pore of His body and so grandly and overwhelmingly enveloped and overpowered father as to fill him with Bliss-Supreme. Father’s heart and mind always remained tuned to this most enchanting and divine melody directly received from the holy pores of Baba Nand Singh Ji’s arm.

The outcome of this grace was beatific. After his retirement, his face, mind, thought and soul were totally turned towards his beloved Master. His intense longing, yearning, craving for realising his Baba Ji face to face had assumed proportions of total madness in love. His only prayer to Mahan Baba Ji, in totality of his burning love, was Baba Ji himself. He begged Baba Nand Singh Ji only, from Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. He coveted his beloved Baba Nand Singh Ji alone to the exclusion of everything else. The whole world had paled into insignificance in comparison with his magnificent object of love. He wept bitterly after physical separation from the Master and was granted direct face-to-face vision when he had resolved to end his life unable to bear the pangs of separation any more.

 	Nanak Jachak Dar Terai

Prabh Tudh Nu Mangai Daan

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (218)
Nanak, the Mendicant, is standing at Thy Altar, O Lord And Begs only Thyself O Lord as Charity.

Hunger for God and hunger for worldliness cannot co-exist. A lover of God does not crave for worldly things and pleasures of the senses. He wants the Lord and the Lord alone to the exclusion of everything else. He is totally immersed in all- absorbing love of the beloved Lord.

Such is the sublime power of the Immortal Nam that it illumines the craver's body and the soul with Eternal Light. It fills him to the brim with its elixir and nectar, the holy flavour and fragrance of which is the greatest blessing to the world. In the Glory of Nam Swarup Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj Shines eternally.

When the body repeats the Holy Name, Soul benefits, when the Self (soul) repeats the Holy name, the world benefits.
 	Baba Narinder Singh Ji

He begged and prayed for Prema Bhagti from Mahan Babaji. He yearned and begged for His love only from his Lord of Love. He never craved for anything worldly or even for Mukti.

He was totally possessed by Divine Love. His life was a perpetual burning incense of love and no one who came in contact with him could remain unaffected and untouched by the fragrance of this strong incense of love, love of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

This pure love of Mahan Babaji was the primary feature of his personality and, the real beauty and glow that radiated from his face.

Divine Love is an inexhaustible and indescribable Bliss experienced only by true Lovers. It is a wonderful mystic experience confirming the truth of the adage that God is Love and Love is God.

Maharaj - Soul of all souls

As the news of Mahan Babaji’s physical departure spread, hundreds of thousands of devotees thronged to have a last holy glimpse.

Father had arranged a large fleet of vehicles - buses and trucks from Moga. All these vehicles were loaded far beyond their capacity to proceed to the river site where the holy body of Mahan Babaji was supposed to be consigned to water. One very old man was hanging on precariously to the tailboard of a truck heavily overloaded with devotees. Father requested him to kindly alight as he could fall down from the moving truck.

Father could not bear the Physical separation from his beloved Master and on returning home, burst into tears like a child in the holy room of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. While thus suffering pangs of separation, he saw a strange vision. Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj transfigured Himself as the very same old person whom father had requested to get down from the heavily loaded truck. There-after Father could not rest at all. He left in the early hours of next morning and after fetching some responsible persons of the area was able to locate that old man after a search of many hours. In utmost humility, he kept his head at the feet of that old man in the presence of many others and prayed for his pardon and forgiveness.

Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj thus unfolded a vision of sublime Knowledge that only one Reality; one Divine Essence pervades all beings, the whole creation. This day He compassionately granted to His dear disciple equanimity of vision, a deep realization of God’s presence in all at all times everywhere.

Sab Gobind Hai Sab Gobind Hai

Gobind Bin Nahin Koi

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (485)

Sabhi Ghat Ram Bole Rama Bole

Ram Bina Ko Bole Re

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (988)

Truth and unity are one. One supreme Reality pervades the whole universe. A true devotee of God has a universal vision, a perception of oneness. Bhagat Namdev perceives his Lord everywhere and sings the Glory of his all pervading Lord accordingly in the foregoing hymns.

Everyone may be theoretically aware of this fact but rare indeed is a blessed soul gifted with this Sam - drishti. Thus blessed, one does not hate or envy anyone. He injures no one and showers the Love of God on all alike. He belongs to the whole universe.

Father had envisioned Mahan Babaji as the indwelling soul of all and derived a spiritual pleasure in serving the Sangat, wiping their shoes with his white flowing beard, feeding, and serving the poor and afflicted. Because he envisioned and beheld his beloved Lord in everyone of them, he experienced unmatched spiritual joy and satisfaction in this humble service.

Lest Mahan Babaji be hurt, he was extremely cautious there- after not to hurt anyone, not to injure any heart or feelings. He was truly blessed with Sam-Drishti - even sightedness.

He saw everyone with equal eye and loved everyone with the same humility and devotion. With such equanimity of vision, with such samdrishti, one loves the whole creation. He once even said.

“How can a true saint curse anyone because he envisions the Lord pervading everyone? He therefore blesses even those who curse and persecute him. This is the true grandeur of Divine Lovers.”
 	Baba Narinder Singh Ji

For Bhai Kanhaiya and Bhai Nand Lal, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib pervaded the whole universe. Their vision had become Divine and what they beheld and perceived was all-Divine. In this vision - Divine, all distinction based on religion, caste, colour, creed, race and nationality disappears, vanishes.

During the performance of first Chalisa, Mahan Babaji showed him a vision, a glimpse of his own ‘Self Aapa’. This glimpse of his ‘Self ’ totally dazzled him. It was a climax of ecstasy, spiritual joy and delight, simply inexpressible. It was a journey into the very source of Divinity and Bliss. After the Chalisa was over, he went out for a stroll. And now Mahan Babaji reveals to him an external vision of the ‘Self ’ accompanying every living being moving on earth. Everyone was invested with this Divine Self.

Sab Main Jot Jot Hai Soi

Tis Ke Chanan Sab Main Chanan Hoi Gur Sakhi Jot Pargat Hoi

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (663)

During this wonderful vision, Mahan Babaji revealed to him the all pervading Lord in all His glory and splendour and the lord started shining in his vision and he saw nothing else but God in everyone and everywhere.

This experience became perpetual thereafter.

Kutta Marg

“Main Kutta Baba Nand Singh Da, Dipti Mera Naam”

He conquers the unconquerable with the humility of a dog for his Master, with the exclusive love and faith of a dog for his Beloved Lord. Even the dog named ‘Kalu’ was an object of respect and adoration for father. Kalu was named Kalu because of its black colour and was always found sitting at the threshold of the Kutia (Thaath) of Babaji. Whenever Babaji came out, Kalu always used to lay itself at His lotus feet and express his love and faith by licking His shoes and by wagging its tail. Babaji used to compassionately respond and acknowledge Kalu's love by keeping His long stick on his forehead. Father’s thoughts, words and speech, service to the sangat, homage at historical gurdwaras, all activities of day-to-day life were invariably saturated with this unparalleled humility and fervour of a dog for its Beloved Master and His Sangat.

Devotional Music and Salami with Band

Band Salami (A Pioneer)

Baba Narinder Singh Ji was a pioneer in offering his homage in yet another unique manner. On the auspicious occasions of Annual Samagams of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj in August every year when hundreds of Akhand paths are simultaneously recited in Mahan Babaji’s sacred memory and when lakhs of devotees visit Nanaksar to pay their homage, Baba Narinder Singh Ji arranged PAP Pipers and Brass Bands to offer salutations to his Supreme Monarch, Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

Bands used to play devotional music for hours and Baba Narinder Singh Ji offered Band salami at Bara Dari, SachKhand, Chhota Thath and lastly in front of the Bara Thath. With thousands of devotees around, it used to be a touching and angelic vision. It was a collective homage, sajda and salute to the Lord.

His call to Mahan Babaji used to be direct and personal, a face-to-face conversation and prayer. Everyone present experienced the Divine presence of Mahan Babaji. Baba Narinder Singh Ji’s holy words of deep love instantly set ablaze the fire of Virha in every heart and devotees used to profusely weep and cry.

A salutation should be rightly presented to the supreme Monarch, Supreme Sovereign of countless worlds. Satgur Sache Patshah is the true Supreme Monarch and presentation of Salami at His Lotus Feet is but the least a mortal can offer.

It was a most fascinating treat to hear his yearning call to his beloved Master, his sole, grand and supreme Lord. As the call welled from the glory and purity of his very soul, it filled every heart with rare expectations and peace of mind. At that very moment of his divine call, tears would start rolling down every cheek. That in itself was a sure sign of the gracious appearance of the Lord, to receive the offer of pure love and salami from His most beloved son. Many blessed souls used to envision the soul-stirring holy scene and later joyfully narrated their experiences. Invariably, all the holy details would tally.

Worldly dignitaries arrive at the appointed time and on their arrival, salute is given to the accompaniment of the Band. But in this case, father would call his Lord with such passionate humility and intense yearning that he would set ablaze the fire of Virha in every heart. In response to father’s cry of the soul, the Mahan Babaji would manifest His holy presence and then would follow a direct, intensely personal and face-to-face holy prayer for the offer of humble salutation, which would make everyone experience the intimate Divine presence of the Lord, as a result of which members of the congregation would profusely weep and cry.

All those who were blessed with the sight of this Holy Communion would break down with tears flowing on every face, and the whole atmosphere, the whole place would vibrate with the Divine presence of the Lord.

These were all the ecstatic outpourings of a full-souled lover of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

Lord of Love showers unlimited Grace on Baba Narinder Singh Ji

It was in December 1972 that Baba Narinder Singh Ji took both these bands to offer his homage and worship to Mahan Baba Harnam Singh Ji Maharaj at Bhuchon in Bathinda District. It was just past midnight, the day being the Auspicious Annual Samagam of Mahan Baba Harnam Singh Ji Maharaj. Bands struck the tunes of devotional music at the Holy Feet of Mahan Babaji. Village folk awakened from their deep slumber, rushed towards the holy spot and soon there was a collection of thousands of devotees in addition to the large congregation, which was already present there.

Baba Narinder Singh Ji offered his Band Salami.

Oh Lord of all Universes Oh Lord of my Supreme Lord (Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj) My Most adorable Dada Guru (Dada stands for Grand Father as Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was his spiritual father) All divine celestials are paying their obeisance to you. All the Universes are singing your Glories. Crores of Akhand and Sampat Akhand Paths are being recited in your honour.

Eh Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj Da Kutta Eh Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj De Dar Da Kutta Eh Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj De Kuttian Da Kutta Eh Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj De Kalu Kutte Da Vee Kutta Eh Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj Da Churha (Sweeper) Terey Dar Te Ik Tuchh Band Lai Kay Haazir Hoya Hai Sachay Patshah Parwaan Karo

This humble dog of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, This humble dog of the altar of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, This humble dog of the dogs of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, This humble dog of kalu dog of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, This humble sweeper of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj is standing with folded hands at your door and altar, with a humble band to offer to you, the Lord of my Lord, a humble Salami (salute). O Merciful Lord, accept this humble salutation as a token of my humble love at your holy feet.

With burning fire of his love for his beloved Master, he instantly set ablaze the minds of all those present with devotion. One could hear outbursts of loving cries from all directions and see tears flowing on every face. Such was invariably the ecstatic impact and powerful influence of his mighty sentiment of devotional love.

The congregation there met a true inheritor of the pure love of his Beloved Baba Ji, a true inheritor of the Grace and Humility of Baba Ji, a true inheritor of the Kingdom of Bliss of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

After the touching and tearful salami we, along with father, retired to a room, arranged for his stay. An old Pandit Ji followed with tearful eyes and sat respectfully on the ground.

Pandit Ji’s gaze was fixed on Baba Narinder Singh Ji and tears were streaming down his cheeks. Father paid courteous compliments to Pandit Ji with reverence. Pandit Ji then conversed the following:

“My name is Jai Lal. I have been the Pujari of the Temple down below since the times of Mahan Baba Harnam Singh Ji Maharaj. Once I was sitting in His presence. It was nearly 45 to 50 years ago. Mahan Baba Ji suddenly said, ‘Oh Pandit’ I replied ‘Ji Maharaj’. He again repeated -

‘Oh Pandit, sun, sadha ati piara putt band liyaegaa tay saanu bare hi piar naal salamian deveygaa - yaad rakheen’.

‘Listen Oh Pandit, my most beloved son will bring bands here and offer salutations here with utmost love- remember this.’ ”

“As it was 45 to 50 years old incident, the same had faded from my mind. But today, as I heard the deafening roar of Devotional Band Tunes, the whole old scene flashed before my eyes. I got up and rushed here to have the Darshans of that beloved son of Mahan Baba Harnam Singh Ji Maharaj. That son whose love and devotion was so warmly acknowledged in anticipation and in advance by the Lord of Love. The same Noor, the same Parkash radiates from your face and you are the same Saroop. Such deep resemblance.”

And saying this he tried to touch father’s feet. But father with due respect and reverence stopped him. But both father and esteemed Pandit Ji burst into tears like children and so did we all in sacred memory of Mahan Baba Harnam Singh Ji Maharaj, Lord of All Grace and Compassion.

The Lord of Love was awaiting, in earnestness, the loving homage of His most beloved son, his unique Band Salami. He was anxiously waiting nearly 50 years in advance and when Salami was offered, the Lord warmly accepted it in flesh and blood and took His beloved son in His warm embrace. Many viewers envisioned the whole soul - stirring event totally wonderstruck.

Babaji took these bands to a number of Historical Gurdwaras and offered his humble salutations there. Notable amongst these were salutations at Sri Harimandir Sahib during 1972 (Kar Sewa) and Sri Goindwal Sahib on the 500th Sacred Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Amar Das Ji. If possible, holy incidents relating thereto will be detailed in next issue.

Climax of Divine Love

Father was a total disciple of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. His love and devotion for Babaji was his tears. He would pour forth a flood of them. He would invariably, as a daily routine, bathe the Lotus Feet of the Lord with these precious pourings of love. He used to weep like a child in divine ecstasy thereby not only completely dissolving his own heart but also that of anyone present around him. The climax was uniquely fascinating. His love and devotion with its intensity would move, and melt the heart of the Lord to an extent that the Lord himself would bathe His devout son with His own tears. In this mutual love of the Lover and the Beloved everyone present intimately felt the presence of the Lord at close quarters and many lucky ones envisioned the whole eternal sport.

It was on the morning of 4th March 1980 at breakfast time. Father was sitting outside, in front of the garage, in the open space in our house No. 203, Sector 33-A, Chandigarh. Kamaljit Singh, son of Sardar Bhagwant Singh of Air Force who was then in personal service of father, served breakfast. Father had just emerged from his prayer room after a span of 5 to 6 hours and suddenly again went into a divine rapture. With holy tears flowing like streams, he started bathing the lotus feet of his beloved Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. This was his daily Nit - Nem.

This exotic stream of love flowed from the depths of his rapturous soul to the depths of the Supreme Soul. It was a continuous process and the stream never dried up. He was blessed with an inexhaustible treasure of intense Love and from this precious treasure poured forth the precious gems of his holy tears in sublime ecstasy.

The Pangs of separation were unbearable. The Condition of the bereaved Lover was pathetic. His yearning for His beloved Master was maddening, His entire yearning, contemplation and meditation were directed and focused on the lotus feet of Babaji. And Babaji was no finite person. He was the all pervading Reality, Truth and Divinity supreme/supernal. With streams of flowing tears, his clothes were completely drenched. But we noticed a very strange thing that day. With tears streaming down, his clothes had become wet-but how strange it was that his turban had also been drenched and had become totally wet.

Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj that day could contain no more, the mighty flood of divine Love within, and flooded and inundated his beloved devotee’s turban, dress nay his whole being with His holy tears. Such concrete, rock-like, solid is the eternal presence of Mahan Babaji though seemingly he had physically disappeared in 1943. The Lord clears the debt of devotion in such unique ways. Mysterious are the ways of the Lord.

Like the burning desire of Mati Das to continue beholding the beloved Satguru (Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib) till his last breath, my respected father's spiritual ambition was to continue beholding the glorious vision of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib and his beloved Babaji every moment of his life.

Father’s devotional instinct/impulse/emotion was always in spate within and gushed forth in streams of tears daily to bathe the sacred feet of his beloved Lord. What a unique daily Nit-Nem, which he never missed till the very last day of his physical existence. When he was thus bathing the lotus feet of Babbage with his streaming tears of love, Babbage’s love for His devotee, which had welled unto the brim, burst forth and bathed the true lover in His own tears.

My younger sister, Bibi Bholan Rani, eldest sister Bibi Ajit Kaur and Kamaljit Singh have preserved with utmost care that holy turban of respected father so compassionately drenched in holy tears of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

The Climax of this unique love was also soul stirring. Some blessed souls who envision Mahan Babaji and bask in His Grace, beheld that his lotus feet and socks were invariably wet. On their humble enquiry, Mahan Babaji most touchingly replied, “Unending torrential tears of Love of my beloved son (Dipty) do not let them dry up”.

As Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Sri Guru Nanak Sahib and Baba Harnam Singh Ji Maharaj had revealed the most intimate and close relationship of father with them in previous births, this process of tearful ecstasy and tearful reunion was repeated frequently with all of them.

Mahan Babaji once remarked that these devotional tears were the most precious jewels of the heaven and the sins of the whole world could be washed away with these. No doubt, with this price-less weapon of tears he had won and conquered the Lord.

Wonder of Wonders

It so chanced one day that my respected father went to pay his humble homage at the Lotus Feet of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. He was called inside. Baba lsher Singh Ji was about to wash the Lotus Feet of Mahan Babaji. My father with folded hands, humbly prayed for Babaji's kind permission for this sacred service, which the most compassionate Babaji granted.

Father placed the Holy Feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj in a small tub; half filled with water and with his trembling hands washed the Holy Feet. After wiping the Holy Feet with a towel, father picked up the tub and went aside to dispose of the water as advised by Baba Isher Singh Ji but he drank to his heart's content, the Blissful 'Charan Amrit' of Mahan Babaji's Lotus Feet. Some of the Charan Amrit he sprinkled over his face, head, and body and tried to pour the leftover on the grass. He experienced a strange and mysterious phenomenon there. He noticed that 'Charan Amrit' while in the process of being poured, physically vanished before touching the ground.

Baffled and Dazzled by this miracle, he went into deep contemplation when confronted with a revealing vision. Celestial Beings in thousands were yearning just for a single drop of that exalted Charan Amrit and did not let a single drop fall on the ground. He was really amazed to observe the yearning, the real thirst on their Holy Faces. This could be compared to a Chatrik bird who does not care for any other source of water, the mighty rivers, the beautiful lakes and flowing springs, for nothing else, but only for a very special drop of rain water called 'Swanti Boond'. It would prefer death rather than quench its thirst from any other source of water. It only craves for this drop (boond). So were celestial beings, who were craving for a drop of glorious Charan Amrit of the Lotus Feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

This is no ordinary Swanti Boond, for which the Celestial Beings were yearning and craving. Chatrik bird is only a mortal bird, thirsting for a drop of rainwater, whereas in this case, Celestials of Heaven were craving for a drop of this rarest of rare Nectar-Charan Amrit of THE LORD OF ALL CELESTIALS - BABA NAND SINGH JI MAHARAJ.

It was really a Wonder of Wonders. Who had assumed this physical body of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj? A Divine Body each pore of which was aglow with the Nectar of NAM. Seven crore pores (Romes) of Mahan Babaji's Holy Body were reciting the Divine Name every Moment in the Sphere of Time.

All the Dargahi Hasti's - Celestial Beings of Heavens, like the Chatrik bird, were craving for just a drop of the Nectar, the Charan Amrit of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. The craze for a drop of the Nectar of this Swanti Boond on those Divine faces is unimaginable and defies description.

It so appears that Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was the Supreme Object of Adoration and Worship for all the Celestials; He was the very support of all Celestials, all the Worlds, being the Incarnation of Nam.

Nam Ke Dharey Khand Brhamandh Nam Ke Dharey Simrit Bed Puran Nam Ke Dharey Sunan Gian Dhian Nam Ke Dharey Aagas Pataal Nam Ke Dharey Sagal Aakar Nam Ke Dharey Puria Sabh Bhavan Nam Kai Sang Udbre Sun Sarvan Kar Kirpa Jis Aapnai Nam Layey NANAK Chauthey Pad Meh So Jan Gat Payey

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (284)

Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was the Greatest Manifestation-Avtar of the Divine Name on this Mother Earth and being so shines Eternally in all His Glory. He is the Repository of all the Divine Excellencies and Virtues. He is IMPERISHABLE. The radiance, the lustre of seven crore romes (pores) of His Holy Body shine far above and beyond such like seven crore Suns of the Universe.

His Holy Body was an Ocean of Bliss and every drop of the water used for the Sacred wash of His Holy Feet became the most precious Nectar (Swanti Boond) for the Celestials. Fragrance of the Divine Nam and the Grace of the Lord was scattered far and wide through every pore of His Holy Body.

Having witnessed this intensity of a unique Tarap and Vyakulta on the Holy Faces of the Celestials, my worshipful father's face also radiated a peculiar and most touching sign of Tarap and Vyakulta, each and every moment of His life. It was easily discernable on his radiant face that Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was the Life of his life and the Supreme Enchanter of his loving heart.

No wonder He used to proclaim with the beat of drum, that Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was the Lord of this World and the Worlds hereafter and the Holy Name of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj Purifies All The Three Worlds.

It become father's Nit-Nem, a daily routine to profusely bathe the Lotus Feet of his Beloved Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj with his humble and holy tears flowing from the depths of his heart.

After this holy experience father's devotional instinct was always in spate within and gushed forth in a stream of tears daily to bathe the Sacred Feet of Babaji and then drink that Nectar to his heart's content. He never missed this Holy Nit-Nem till the very last day of his physical existence.

Some of the Charan-Amrit, He had sprinkled on his face, head and body.

Gur Ki Rein Nit Majan Karo

Janam Janam Ki Haumain Mal Haro

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (239)

He took both internal and external bath in the Charan Amrit of Babaji. It was the Nectar of Humility he had drunk to his heart's content. It was a mortal's dip in the Nectar of Immortality. With the Charan Amrit overflowing in the body, the humble heart of father became a perpetual seat for Babaji's Lotus Feet. A heart totally free from egotism and darkness. With this marvelous effect of intense humility on him, his was the Nam Packed Heart, his was the Nectar Filled Body, and his was the Light Packed Soul in the rarest of the rare Grace of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

And from that humble heart, a powerful mighty petition of Mercy, later, arose to the Lord of Lords, the Supreme Lord of Kalyug Sri Guru Nanak Sahib, known the World over for His Mercy and Compassion on the poor and the downtrodden.

Guru Nanak Data Baksh Lai Baba Nanak Baksh Lai

Guru Nanak Data Baksh Lai Baba Nanak Baksh Lai

One day I was busy for quite some time in writing down all my personal accounts of the last few months and in filing the relevant receipts.

When I went into the holy presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at the time of my evening prayer and got immersed in Nam Simran I was blessed with a revealing vision.

Baba Harnam Singh Ji Maharaj asked me “You spent most of the day today in account keeping. You ask for the details of accounts from every one you deal with. If you are asked to furnish the accounts of this birth of yours?” (I was shaken). “Not only of this birth if the whole account of all your previous births is called for, what shall happen to you?” He added. I was totally shaken and realized that everyone is accountable for one’s deeds, good or bad. Every one is answerable for one’s sins to God. One has to render a detailed account of all the deeds. And how perfect would be the accountability and dispensation of justice in the highest Court of Truth and nothing but the Truth.

Suddenly I remembered the holy words of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj:

‘Saadhi Hasaab Naal Nahin Mukini Hasaab Naal Saadhi Poori Nahin Paini’

We can never be saved on the basis of our accounts, deeds. And thereafter, I suddenly saw my own worshipful father standing with folded hands in utmost humility with a prayer rising deep from his soul.

Guru Nanak Data Baksh Lai Baba Nanak Baksh Lai

I then fully understood the significance of this great spiritual prescription, a wonderful remedy for the dreadful malady of one’s deeds from which none can escape.

Sri Guru Nanak Sahib's infinite mercy knows no limits. Guru Nanak forgives the greatest sinners. The all compassionate Lord Guru Nanak did not ask Kauda, Sajjan, Leper of Dipalpur, and so many others to render their accounts.

This prayer uplifts every aspirant into the orbit of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib's infinite Grace. It rescues every one from the clutches of one’s accounts. I stood behind my father and prayed to Sri Guru Nanak Sahib, the most compassionate Lord, for His mercy. Sri Guru Nanak Sahib's very nature is mercy and compassion.

Satguru Daya Nidh Mehma Agadh Bodh

Namo Namo Namo Namo Net Net Net Hai

 	Bhai Gurdas Ji

Baba Harnam Singh Ji Maharaj smiled and the vision was over.

 	Lekha Maange Ta Kin Diey

Sukh Nahi Fun Dooey Tiey Aapey Baksh Laye Prabh Saacha Aapey Baksh Milawanyia

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (111)

Sri Guru Amar Das Ji says-

Should the Lord demand an account of one’s deeds Who can render it to the satisfaction of the Lord? Bliss can never be attained on the basis of one’s accounts Only the Lord through His Grace forgives And bestows the Bliss of union with Him.

Guru Nanak Data Baksh Lai Baba Nanak Baksh Lai

It is an all out petition of Mercy to the all Merciful Lord Guru Nanak. And this soulful petition works wonders, works miracles. Power and Potency of Celestial Hymns

If I remember correctly it was on the morning of 14th/15th December, 1971, that some members of the Sangat at Pathankot approached father and requested for his permission to leave Pathankot with their families for reasons of safety, as Pathankot was being successively air-raided many a time round the clock after the outbreak of hostilities. I distinctly remember that this request was voiced through Sardar Bhagwant Singh and his devoted wife Bibi Baldev Kaur of Model Town, Pathankot.

On hearing this, Babaji went into meditation for some time. With due permission from his Lord Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, he drew an imaginary line encircling Pathankot with the stick of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj while reciting the following holy hymn of Sri Guru Granth Sahib:

Taati vau na lagaee parbrahm sarnaee,

Chaugird hamaray Ram kar dukh lagay na bhaee Satguru poora bhetiya jin banat banaee, Ram nam aukhadh deeya eka liv laee. (Rahau) Rakh leeyey tinn rakhanhar sabh biyadh mitaee. Kaho Nanak kirpa bhaee Prabh bhyay sahaee.

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (819)
Under shelter of the Lord, the danger dare not touch me.

Around me is Ramkar (Lord’s circle of protection) and no misery can afflict me, O brother. I have met the perfect Guru who has molded me in His Will. He has blessed me with the Nectar of the Lord’s Name as remedy and with the love of the beloved Lord. The All Protecting-Lord has saved me and bestowed on me freedom from all maladies. Nanak says: “The Lord has blessed me with His Grace and protection.”

And with the mighty power and potency of this celestial hymn, he made the line so drawn impenetrable. He advised the sangat to stay at Pathankot with peace and free of worry, as no enemy aircraft would disturb Pathankot any more. And this is precisely what happened. No air raids took place on Pathankot-thereafter. So miraculous is the power and potency of celestial hymns of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Many years, later when I asked him why the enemy aircraft did not touch Pathankot, he explained to me the aforementioned.

After retirement he spent most of his time in very hard austerities. He undertook Chalisas one after the other and he used to complete many in a year. It involved nearly twelve hours of recitation of a holy hymn of Sri Guru Granth Sahib preceded by Mool Mantar upto ‘Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach’ and followed by ‘Sat Nam Sri Waheguru’ on each bead. He used to complete thirty-two malas (one mala means Rosary of 108 beads) daily for a continuous period of forty days without any break. This simran and meditation used to be in addition to his daily ‘Nit-Nem’.

He further told me that he had once completed a Chalisa of the above mentioned Hymn (Tati Vao Naan Lagaee) also. With successful completion of a chalisa of a hymn, with the Grace of the Satguru, one is consecrated in the halo and the grace of that divine hymn. The Divine Power and Potency of the said hymn can then work wonders.

During such holy Chalisas, his mystic experiences had touched the pinnacle of divine attainment. Father once in a divine mood, told me that Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj once led father to the holiest of the holy place called Sach-Khand. In ecstatic gratitude, spellbound by the Bliss of Supreme Sach-Khand father paid his humble homage to the Supreme Samast Jot Nirankar and Lord Guru Nanak in the holy presence of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. When he lifted his head, he now beheld Lord Guru Nanak in all luminosity embodying all the three, i.e. Himself, Samast Jot Nirankar, and Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. He again prostrated for the sublime vision of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib in all the three Divine Manifestations. When father again lifted his head, he now beholds Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, manifesting all the three Divine manifestations. Father again bowed in total reverence and humility.

Having narrated to me this direct experience of his, he advised me not to differentiate between Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, Supreme Lord Guru Nanak and Akal Purkh Nirankar.

Having bathed in the Light of Divine wisdom from its very source (Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj), nothing more remains to be known or learnt. Having seen Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, nothing more remains to be seen, having heard Him, nothing more remains to be heard, and having experienced His Supreme Bliss, nothing more remains to be enjoyed.
 	Baba Narinder Singh Ji

It was during one of such holy chalisas that father one day envisioned the world on fire. Father started flying upwards and while so rising up in the air, he was reciting

Guru Nanak Data Baksh Lai Baba Nanak Baksh Lai

The people, in agony, down below heard the life saving hymn from father with wonderful effect. Whosoever recited this humble prayer to Sri Guru Nanak Sahib started rising up towards father totally safe from the world on fire. Then came the divine oracle of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

Put Jera Bhi Eh Shabad Japey Ga,

Oh Samey Di Ag Ton Bach Jaaye Ga

Oh my son, whosoever recites this prayer to the All Merciful Lord Guru Nanak shall be saved from

forthcoming terrible times of this Kalyug.

Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj - Parting Holy Gift

In August 1943, we were present at the holy Thaath on the eve of physical departure of Mahan Babaji. Babaji's Holy Body was placed on a cot in Baradari, for a last Holy glimpse. My respected father, along-with all the members of our family, was standing nearby. It was very painful for all of us to bear the pangs of separation from our Beloved Lord and all of us were in tears. Particularly my father's condition was very pathetic. He was wailing and crying like a child, unable to bear the pangs of this physical separation. For him life was now more miserable than death and he was on the verge of collapse, while uttering the Holy Hymn of the Greatest Lover of all times - Sri Guru Angad Sahib.

Jis Piarey Sion Nehu Tis Aagai Mar Chaliai

Dhrig Jiwan Sansar Takai Pachhai Jiwana

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (83)

It was absolutely clear that my revered father could not live and survive for long without his Sole and Supreme Object of Love, Worship and Adoration-Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. It was at this critical juncture of father's death like-agony that Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj suddenly opened His Merciful Holy Eyes and the Nectar of Mercy flowed from these Pools of Nectar to his most Beloved Devotee, showering on him the most needed Divine consolation. Babaji with His right hand then pointed towards His footwear (slippers) lying on the side of the cot.

My father indicated to me accordingly and I picked up the sacred footwear of Mahan Babaji, wrapped the same in my turban and placed it on my head. Father informed the sewadars who were present at that time and after obtaining due permission later took this sacred footwear along with us.

For Baba Narinder Singh Ji, the Holy Footwear of his Beloved Lord became his life. He worshipped the Holy Footwear of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj for the rest of his life. For Baba Narinder Singh Ji, the Sacred Footwear of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was the most prized possession of his life and much more valuable than the Kingdom of Earth and Heaven.

His worship, love and devotion for Babaji's footwear was his tears, which he would pour forth in unending streams.

My venerable father used to rapturously narrate the gospel of adoration of the Sacred Sandals of Lord Rama by Bharat Ji during the absence of the Lord for a long period of fourteen years and also the incident of the great sacrifice made by Amir Khusro, an illustrious disciple of Hazrat Nizammudin Aulia, in purchasing the worn out and old foot-wear of his Pir-Murshid (Hazrat Nizammudin Aulia) from another frustrated disciple of his Murshid in exchange of all the riches, he possessed.

When I used to hear the above incidents from his lips, I used to very much feel the Most Wonderful Glory of his own Devotion to the Holy Footwear of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

On 12 March 1983, during the last few moments of his physical presence here, my father asked my eldest sister Bibi Ajit Kaur to bring the Sacred Foot-Wear of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, which on presentation, my respected father, while lying on a bed placed on his shining broad Forehead with utmost reverence. And paying his last humble homage thereat, he disappeared in and breathed his last unto the Holy Footwear.

He thus blissfully breathed his last unto the Holy Footwear of the Lotus Feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. He dissolved himself in that Purest of the Pure Holy Dust in which he had bathed and flourished all his life. He disappeared body, mind and soul, into the highest and the Supreme Object of his Love-the Holy Feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

It appeared at the moment that He had disappeared into the very source of His Life, which were the Lotus Feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. It also appeared that He had His last Holy Dip in the Sacred Dust of Babaji's Holy Feet.

Prior to his physical departure from earth, Baba Narinder Singh Ji had desired and instructed us that His Holy Body should not be touched for five days and thereafter His Body be consigned to waters in the river Sutlej at Bhavor Sahib in Nangal. As per the instructions, we kept the Holy Body for Five days without using any ice during the month of March from 12th March to 16th March 1983. There was no trace of decomposition; the Holy Body was as fresh as alive. His Holy face was radiating like a sun with the same intensity of Spiritual Glow.

What the Holiest of the Holy Disappearance In the Holiest of the Holy Dust of Holiest of the Holy Lotus- Feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj meant was gloriously revealed In the Divine Procession, which ensued after this Holy Dip.

Then started a Divine Procession led by numerous Dargahi Bands. Throughout the route of Procession, passing through all the Great Pilgrimage Centers of all the Religions-Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Goindwal Sahib and all other Historical Gurdwaras, Great Historical Temples, Great Mecca and the Churches of Lord Christ, there was non-stop performance of Devotional Music by the Divine Bands and constant and continuous showering of fragrant flowers from the Divines and the Celestials. The Holy Procession culminated at SACHKHAND) on 16th March 1983 at the time when the Holy Body was consigned to waters.

Such was the Grand Procession organized for a True Lover of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. Father was made to sit in a beautifully decorated palanquin of Light. The Procession was led by Dargahl Bands Playing Devotional Music and was followed by multitude of Celestial Beings. A Divine Voice In unison arose and roared surcharging the whole atmosphere with the spirit of Divinity. In tune with the beat of the drums, the Bands were playing, the bards were singing and the Holy ones were chanting the Glory of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, in unison.

Baba Nand Singh Ji Teri Jai Howey Baba Nand Singh Ji Teri Jai Howey

They all hailed glory to Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj in wonderful rapturous ecstasy.

One really cannot imagine the extreme agony caused by physical separation of the Beloved. This extreme agony of Sri Guru Angad Sahib radiates out of His famous outpouring:

Jis Piarey Sion Nehu Tis Aagai Mar Chaliai

Dhrig Jiwan Sansar Takai Pachhai Jiwana

 	Sri Guru Granth Sahib (83)

With heart and soul exclusively set in the Beloved, one can sustain and survive only on one ray of hope and that is union with the Lord. One can never otherwise be delivered of one's anguish and extreme death like agony on account of separation. For an embodied soul physical union with the beloved means everything.

This is how Baba Narinder Singh Ji physically departed from this world to permanently reside, to eternally dwell in the Lotus-Feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj-His Lord of Love. Such was the most wonderful last Divine Journey of a most illustrious Divine Lover of Baba Nand Singh Maharaj. It was a most rewarded Divine Voyage from the earth to the Celestial Home. It was a mind-boggling ascent from earth to the Divine Destination.

Conclusion

Baba Narinder Singh ji lived a unique Religion, a Religion of unending Holy tears, a Religion of Love Supreme, a Religion of total humility and a Religion of exclusive devotion, complete surrender and loyalty to his beloved Master as His humble dog.

Initially he beheld His visions, felt the gentle pressure of His Holy Hand on his head and heard His reassuring holy voice but later beheld and talked to Him face to face. For him the eternal physical presence of Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was thus a direct experience of Reality, of Eternal Truth and not a matter of sheer blind faith.

He was completely immersed in the sweetness of His Nam (Nam Ras) and drenched in the fragrance of His Lotus feet (Prem Ras). Sat Guru is the real and true bestower of Love-Divine, of Prema. His pull is highly magnetic and powerful. He pulls and draws the blessed devotee with such intensity that he is lifted to the highest plane of Bliss - Prem Ras.

The Sun-like spiritual glow on his face was a mere reflection of the Eternal Glory of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

Baba Narinder Singh Ji was a blazing flame of Divine Love and none who came in his contact could remain unaffected. He scattered the fragrance of this Love wherever he stayed. Even the atmosphere of the place he stayed got surcharged with this unusual fragrance and spread joy and peace.

Once he said that the sun and moon provide physical illumination and that illumination is also restricted to a part of the day. Illumination bestowed by Mahan Baba Ji is eternal. It never sets and does not get exhausted.

Pure divine love was his Supreme Religion and humility of heart was his prime wealth.

Having surrendered his all i.e. mind, body, possessions at the holy feet of his beloved Master and having become a bonded laborer to the Master’s Will, he performed wonderful deeds of great heroic valor.

His look had a remarkable spiritual majesty and charm.

He observed immaculate purity in the service and worship of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

How glorious, wonderful and miraculous is the power of the Lord’s pure love and His Amrit Nam. So intense was the force of this love in the hearts of true Bhagats like Namdev and Dhanna that they could perceive the Lord in flesh and blood with their physical eyes. My respected father, Baba Narinder Singh Ji, sought only one boon from his beloved Master. He sought from Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, Baba Nand Singh Ji Himself. He asked from the Lord, the Lord Himself because he yearned and wailed for his beloved Master only and for nothing else. He had staked his all for the sake of his beloved Master. He consecrated every breath of his life to the sacred love of his beloved Satguru.

Always bereaved with the pangs of separation from his beloved Satguru, his condition became pathetic. Unending tears of love were his prayer, his worship, his devotion and bhagti, his religion, his expression, his language, his tapasaya, his austerities.

With these over-flowing tears of love, he daily bathed the holy feet of his beloved Master Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. With these holy tears present, his eyes gleamed with vision eternal. This was unique Nit-Nem, a unique way of worship, a unique offering. These most precious pearls of his holy tears worked wonders and miracles. His over-flowing love attracted over-flowing grace.

Prema ras is the supreme ras. Prema ras is the essence, flavour of pure devotion, bhagti. There is nothing comparable with prema ras. Mahan Baba Ji, the most compassionate Master, had bestowed the boon of prema ras to father. Endowed and blessed with this unique and supreme boon, his whole life was actuated with this divine love. This pure love was his perpetual food, his very sustenance, his very life. Mati Dass gave supreme sacrifice fired with this love of his beloved Satguru Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib. It was this love, which glowed like a sun on his face. Divine Love, humility and sacrifice are synonymous. These shine and blaze together in a loving heart. This love of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj was writ-large on father’s broad forehead and nothing could conceal this.

As Nam cannot be cut by any weapon, cannot be burnt by fire, nor drowned in water, nor dried by air, nor robbed by robbers, similarly the most precious instinct, the emotion of pure love cannot be touched by any foreign element. Because the Nectar of Nam and love is lodged deep in the spiritual heart, in the soul and is the very support of life.

Nam is the bliss of the soul, it is the most enrapturing, enchanting, thrilling music and celestial melody of the soul, the spiritual heart. By Satguru’s grace, the celestial echo of His holy Nam throbs in the whole body, in the whole being, in the very fibre of the entire existence.

Though he had developed a strong disinclination towards worldly relations and activities, he had snapped all worldly ties after retirement and spent 30 years of his retired life in exclusive loving worship and service of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

He was a resolute, vigorous and totally devoted Police Officer in his profession. And after his retirement his steadfast determination, vigor, and the zeal and earnestness for which he was well known, were now fully diverted to spiritual pursuit.

Totally immersed in the all pervading reality, he used to envision his beloved Lord in all alike. In such perception no trace of jealousy, envy, rivalry or pride is left.

His dwelling place was the Lotus feet of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj and continues to be so. He once gave his permanent address as the Lotus feet of his beloved Master, Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, and he is eternally dwelling there. Surprisingly, whenever he is to be contacted now, it is through those Lotus feet that he responds to his admirers and clears their doubts.

In the early forties, in a vision, Babaji asked father to hide deep into His Lotus feet. Father dived deep into the Sacred feet. S. Sampuran Singh Ji along with some other disciples could not trace and search father. Unique feature of this incident was that father never left that blessed shelter and abode of Babaji’s Lotus feet, and lived the remainder of his life thereafter, deeply rooted in that abode. He operated and did his other duties from that abode only. His every activity emitted the fragrance of Babaji’s Lotus feet. Intense spiritual glow on his face was enough proof of his continuous immersion in the depths of the Lord’s feet. He had thus attained the bliss of the holy feet of his beloved Lord while living and remained intoxicated with that Nectar throughout.

He did not permit anyone to touch his feet. He once told me that if any one touched his feet, he felt as if a snake had bitten him. It was a most painful experience for him.

He did everything at the dictate of holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He invariably took Hukamnama from Sri Guru Granth Sahib and followed the dictate in letter and spirit with a rock-like faith. His sole guide in his spiritual and earthly life was Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Seeking the wish, the orders of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in everything spiritual and mundane had made his life totally God-oriented.

He drank the Nectar of Devotion to his heart’s content. Every moment of his life he was immersed in conscious service of the Divine. He invoked the Lord’s presence day and night. Every moment of his life he toiled with a yearning heart with his face, mind and soul turned to his beloved Master in perpetual sajda, in eternal homage.

As he had surrendered his all at the holy feet of his Master, his mind was always established in divine absorption and was always intoxicated with the elixir of the Lord’s Name. A unique divine glow on his face was in itself a proof of his perfect peace of mind and of total contentment.

After his early midnight bath, he would himself prepare Karah Prashad for the Lord. He used to be in the holy service and presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib from about 2.00 a.m. to 9.00 or 10.00 a.m. Whenever he emerged out of his prayer room his face used to be shining with the glow and luster of the rising sun. This extra ordinary glow on his face in itself spoke of his direct and intimate personal contact with his beloved Lord for the past many hours.

We had the good fortune of also seeing and watching him, a number of times, in another wonderful ecstatic mood. When his precious tears started flowing in streams to bathe the lotus feet of his beloved Master nothing could restrain him, nothing could divert his attention. He used to be actually sporting in an Ocean of Bliss. Sacred memory thereof is so overwhelming and elevating as to defy description.

Prema bhagti - divine love was predominant and transparent in every type of bhagti he did. In recitation of Gurbani, in listening to Kirtan, in service of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, whatever he did, he did all this in maddening ecstasy of love. He was totally possessed by Prema Bhagti and that was visibly the supreme essence of his earthly life. He had become an embodiment of true love.

On every challenging contingency in the face of death, he invariably experienced and felt a soft touch of pressing and patting of his head by the divine hands of Baba Ji to reassure the beloved son of His eternal presence and company with him. He many a time heard the divine voice of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj saying “Oh my beloved son, I am with you”.

In a vision at Rawalpindi, during the terrible days of partition, father saw the holy hand of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj bleeding. On enquiry, compassionate Baba Ji replied, “This hand takes upon itself, consumes all the blows and shots of the enemy on you. The Holy hand of Baba Ji always acted as the Divine shield for father against all odds.

When the Guru’s perpetual presence is felt in every breath, is experienced every moment of life, Guru consciousness rises to a state of sublimity and lofty bliss. The joy, the bliss of meditation on the Lotus feet of the beloved Lord and steadfast Guru consciousness rises far beyond the limits of intellectual understanding and mental grasp and cannot be described in words. As Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj spent every moment of His life in firm, and perpetual living presence of His beloved Lord Guru Nanak, so did Baba Narinder Singh Ji, consecrate every breath of his life on the Lotus feet of his beloved Master Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. He lived every moment in enchanting bliss of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj’s eternal presence.

The Lord grants a boon of suffering to those with whom he is pleased, in the annals of spiritual history, no one has attained God realization on a bed of flowers. Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib was asked the same question as to why devotees of God face and undergo so much suffering. “Real nature of the world cannot be otherwise comprehended and known” was His reply. It was really amazing that undergoing successive sufferings and calamities, spiritual glow on father's face correspondingly and progressively increased and glowed with more intensity. Even four days after his death, when his mortal body was to be consigned to waters, his face glowed with the same intensity. Physical death could not dampen and dim the spiritual glow radiating like a sun from his face. Such is the unique glory of divine love, which Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj had so graciously bestowed on His loving devotee.

As the sufferings of father multiplied and grew in intensity, his faith and devotion rather strengthened. No worldly challenges, no sufferings, no jolts how so ever strong, nor even deaths in the family of his wife and later his son, could shake his faith and devotion. He rather rejoiced in sufferings, sensing the divine hands of his own Saviour behind them. Amazingly, he had consecrated every suffering at the altar of his beloved Master. For true devotees, sufferings are accepted as blessings.

Suffering is a privilege of Divine Lovers. They welcome and rejoice in suffering. Those who consider and view God and Satguru as the sole Karta (Doer), for them any amount of suffering is a welcome blessing, a special boon from the Lord, Himself.
 	Baba Narinder Singh Ji

Many a time he used to say, “Narinder Singh had died long ago”. Supreme object of his love, adoration and worship was Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. Thus immersed and totally buried in Guru consciousness, every moment of his life he had completely lost his own individuality, ego and identity and instead in his form and personality radiated the splendour of Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj. Having thus literally died while actually living, he led an astonishingly blessed life.

Like a fragrant and vibrant flower of divine love, he perpetually lays prostrate at the lotus feet of his beloved Master Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.
