Ḏẖig ṯinĥĝ ḝĝ jīvi▫ĝ jinĝ vidĝṇī ĝs. ||21||

Cursed are the lives of those who place their hopes in others. ||21||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਮੈ ਹੋਦਾ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤਾ ਆਇੜਿਆਂ ॥

Farīḝĝ je mai hoḝĝ vĝri▫ĝ miṯĝ ĝ▫iṛi▫ĝʼn.

Fareed, if I had been there when my friend came, I would have made myself a sacrifice to him.

ਹੇੜਾ ਜਲੈ ਮਜੀਠ ਜਿਉ ਉਪਰਿ ਅੰਗਾਰਾ ॥੨੨॥

Heṛĝ jalai majīṯẖ ji▫o upar angĝrĝ. ||22||

Now my flesh is burning red on the hot coals. ||22||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਦਾਖ ਬਿਜਉਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਕਰਿ ਬੀਜੈ ਜਟ੝ ॥

Farīḝĝ loṛai ḝĝkẖ bij▫urī▫ĝʼn kikar bījai jat.

Fareed, the farmer plants acacia trees, and wishes for grapes.

ਹੰਢੈ ਉਂਨ ਕਤਾਇਦਾ ਪੈਧਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਪਟ੝ ॥੨੩॥

Handẖai unn kaṯĝ▫iḝĝ paiḝẖĝ loṛai pat. ||23||

He is spinning wool, but he wishes to wear silk. ||23||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਗਲੀਝ ਚਿਕੜ੝ ਦੂਰਿ ਘਰ੝ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨੇਹ੝ ॥

Farīḝĝ galī▫e cẖikaṛ ḝūr gẖar nĝl pi▫ĝre nehu.

Fareed, the path is muddy, and the house of my Beloved is so far away.

ਚਲਾ ਤ ਭਿਜੈ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਰਹਾਂ ਤ ਤ੝ਟੈ ਨੇਹ੝ ॥੨੪॥

Cẖalĝ ṯa bẖijai kamblī rahĝʼn ṯa ṯutai nehu. ||24||

If I go out, my blanket will get soaked, but if I remain at home, then my heart will be broken. ||24||

ਭਿਜਉ ਸਿਜਉ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਅਲਹ ਵਰਸਉ ਮੇਹ੝ ॥

Bẖija▫o sija▫o kamblī alah varsa▫o mehu.

My blanket is soaked, drenched with the downpour of the Lord's Rain.

ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਜਣਾ ਤ੝ਟਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਨੇਹ੝ ॥੨੫॥

Jĝ▫e milĝ ṯinĝ sajṇĝ ṯuta▫o nĝhī nehu. ||25||

I am going out to meet my Friend, so that my heart will not be broken. ||25||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮੈ ਭੋਲਾਵਾ ਪਗ ਦਾ ਮਤ੝ ਮੈਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

Farīḝĝ mai bẖolĝvĝ pag ḝĝ maṯ mailī ho▫e jĝ▫e.

Fareed, I was worried that my turban might become dirty.

ਗਹਿਲਾ ਰੂਹ੝ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਸਿਰ੝ ਭੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨੬॥

Gahilĝ rūhu na jĝṇ▫ī sir bẖī mitī kẖĝ▫e. ||26||

My thoughtless self did not realize that one day, dust will consume my head as well. ||26||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸਕਰ ਖੰਡ੝ ਨਿਵਾਤ ਗ੝ੜ੝ ਮਾਖਿਓ”੝ ਮਾਂਝਾ ਦ੝ਧ੝ ॥

Farīḝĝ sakar kẖand nivĝṯ guṛ mĝkẖi▫o mĝʼnjẖĝ ḝuḝẖ.

Fareed: sugar cane, candy, sugar, molasses, honey and buffalo's milk -

ਸਭੇ ਵਸਤੂ ਮਿਠੀਆਂ ਰਬ ਨ ਪ੝ਜਨਿ ਤ੝ਧ੝ ॥੨੭॥

Sabẖe vasṯū miṯẖī▫ĝʼn rab na pujan ṯuḝẖ. ||27||

all these things are sweet, but they are not equal to You. ||27||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰੋਟੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਠ ਕੀ ਲਾਵਣ੝ ਮੇਰੀ ਭ੝ਖ ॥

Farīḝĝ rotī merī kĝṯẖ kī lĝvaṇ merī bẖukẖ.

Fareed, my bread is made of wood, and hunger is my appetizer.

ਜਿਨਾ ਖਾਧੀ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਘਣੇ ਸਹਨਿਗੇ ਦ੝ਖ ॥੨੮॥

Jinĝ kẖĝḝẖī cẖopṛī gẖaṇe sėhnige ḝukẖ. ||28||

Those who eat buttered bread, will suffer in terrible pain. ||28||

ਰ੝ਖੀ ਸ੝ਖੀ ਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਠੰਢਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਉ ॥

Rukẖī sukẖī kẖĝ▫e kai ṯẖandẖĝ pĝṇī pī▫o.

Eat dry bread, and drink cold water.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਨਾ ਤਰਸਾਝ ਜੀਉ ॥੨੯॥

Farīḝĝ ḝekẖ parĝ▫ī cẖopṛī nĝ ṯarsĝ▫e jī▫o. ||29||

Fareed, if you see someone else's buttered bread, do not envy him for it. ||29||

ਅਜ੝ ਨ ਸ੝ਤੀ ਕੰਤ ਸਿਉ ਅੰਗ੝ ਮ੝ੜੇ ਮ੝ੜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

Aj na suṯī kanṯ si▫o ang muṛe muṛ jĝ▫e.

This night, I did not sleep with my Husband Lord, and now my body is suffering in pain.

ਜਾਇ ਪ੝ਛਹ੝ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਤ੝ਮ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੩੦॥

Jĝ▫e pucẖẖahu dohĝgaṇī ṯum ki▫o raiṇ vihĝ▫e. ||30||

Go and ask the deserted bride, how she passes her night. ||30||

ਸਾਹ੝ਰੈ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹੈ ਪੇਈਝ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥

Sĝhurai dẖo▫ī nĝ lahai pe▫ī▫ai nĝhī thĝ▫o.

She finds no place of rest in her father-in-law's home, and no place in her parents' home either.

ਪਿਰ੝ ਵਾਤੜੀ ਨ ਪ੝ਛਈ ਧਨ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੩੧॥

Pir vĝṯ▫ṛī na pucẖẖ▫ī ḝẖan sohagaṇ nĝ▫o. ||31||

Her Husband Lord does not care for her; what sort of a blessed, happy soul-bride is she? ||31||

ਸਾਹ੝ਰੈ ਪੇਈਝ ਕੰਤ ਕੀ ਕੰਤ੝ ਅਗੰਮ੝ ਅਥਾਹ੝ ॥

Sĝhurai pe▫ī▫ai kanṯ kī kanṯ agamm athĝhu.

In her father-in-law's home hereafter, and in her parents' home in this world, she belongs to her Husband Lord. Her Husband is Inaccessible and Unfathomable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਜ੝ ਭਾਵੈ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ ॥੩੨॥

Nĝnak so sohĝgaṇī jo bẖĝvai beparvĝh. ||32||

O Nanak, she is the happy soul-bride, who is pleasing to her Carefree Lord. ||32||

ਨਾਤੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਸੰਬਹੀ ਸ੝ਤੀ ਆਇ ਨਚਿੰਦ੝ ॥

Nĝṯī ḝẖoṯī sambhī suṯī ĝ▫e nacẖinḝ.

Bathing, washing and decorating herself, she comes and sleeps without anxiety.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਹੀ ਸ੝ ਬੇੜੀ ਹਿੰਙ੝ ਦੀ ਗਈ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਗੰਧ੝ ॥੩੩॥

Farīḝĝ rahī so beṛī hiń ḝī ga▫ī kathūrī ganḝẖ. ||33||

Fareed, she still smells like asafoetida; the fragrance of musk is gone. ||33||

ਜੋਬਨ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨਾ ਡਰਾਂ ਜੇ ਸਹ ਪ੝ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

Joban jĝʼnḝe nĝ darĝʼn je sah parīṯ na jĝ▫e.

I am not afraid of losing my youth, as long as I do not lose the Love of my Husband Lord.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਿਤੀ ਜੋਬਨ ਪ੝ਰੀਤਿ ਬਿਨ੝ ਸ੝ਕਿ ਗਝ ਕ੝ਮਲਾਇ ॥੩੪॥

Farīḝĝ kiṯīʼn joban parīṯ bin suk ga▫e kumlĝ▫e. ||34||

Fareed, so many youths, without His Love, have dried up and withered away. ||34||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਚਿੰਤ ਖਟੋਲਾ ਵਾਣ੝ ਦ੝ਖ੝ ਬਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਛਾਵਣ ਲੇਫ੝ ॥

Farīḝĝ cẖinṯ kẖatolĝ vĝṇ ḝukẖ birėh vicẖẖĝvaṇ lef.

Fareed, anxiety is my bed, pain is my mattress, and the pain of separation is my blanket and quilt.

ਝਹ੝ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਚੇ ਵੇਖ੝ ॥੩੫॥

Ėhu hamĝrĝ jīvṇĝ ṯū sĝhib sacẖe vekẖ. ||35||

Behold, this is my life, O my True Lord and Master. ||35||

ਬਿਰਹਾ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਆਖੀਝ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਤੂ ਸ੝ਲਤਾਨ੝ ॥

Birhĝ birhĝ ĝkẖī▫ai birhĝ ṯū sulṯĝn.

Many talk of the pain and suffering of separation; O pain, you are the ruler of all.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿਤ੝ ਤਨਿ ਬਿਰਹ੝ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਤਨ੝ ਜਾਣ੝ ਮਸਾਨ੝ ॥੩੬॥

Farīḝĝ jiṯ ṯan birahu na ūpjai so ṯan jĝṇ masĝn. ||36||

Fareed, that body, within which love of the Lord does not well up - look upon that body as a cremation ground. ||36||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਝ ਵਿਸ੝ ਗੰਦਲਾ ਧਰੀਆਂ ਖੰਡ੝ ਲਿਵਾੜਿ ॥

Farīḝĝ e vis ganḝlĝ ḝẖarī▫ĝʼn kẖand livĝṛ.

Fareed, these are poisonous sprouts coated with sugar.

ਇਕਿ ਰਾਹੇਦੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਝ ਇਕਿ ਰਾਧੀ ਗਝ ਉਜਾੜਿ ॥੩੭॥

Ik rĝheḝe rėh ga▫e ik rĝḝẖī ga▫e ujĝṛ. ||37||

Some die planting them, and some are ruined, harvesting and enjoying them. ||37||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਹੰਢਿ ਕੈ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੰਮਿ ॥

Farīḝĝ cẖĝr gavĝ▫i▫ĝ handẖ kai cẖĝr gavĝ▫i▫ĝ samm.

Fareed, the hours of the day are lost wandering around, and the hours of the night are lost in sleep.

ਲੇਖਾ ਰਬ੝ ਮੰਗੇਸੀਆ ਤੂ ਆਂਹੋ ਕੇਰ੝ਹੇ ਕੰਮਿ ॥੩੮॥

Lekẖĝ rab mangesī▫ĝ ṯū ĝʼnho kerĥe kamm. ||38||

God will call for your account, and ask you why you came into this world. ||38||

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਰਿ ਦਰਵਾਜੈ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਿਉ ਡਿਠੋ ਘੜੀਆਲ੝ ॥

Farīḝĝ ḝar ḝarvĝjai jĝ▫e kai ki▫o diṯẖo gẖaṛī▫ĝl.

Fareed, you have gone to the Lord's Door. Have you seen the gong there?

ਝਹ੝ ਨਿਦੋਸਾਂ ਮਾਰੀਝ ਹਮ ਦੋਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲ੝ ॥੩੯॥

Ėhu niḝosĝʼn mĝrī▫ai ham ḝosĝʼn ḝĝ ki▫ĝ hĝl. ||39||

This blameless object is being beaten - imagine what is in store for us sinners! ||39||

ਘੜੀਝ ਘੜੀਝ ਮਾਰੀਝ ਪਹਰੀ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

Gẖaṛī▫e gẖaṛī▫e mĝrī▫ai pahrī lahai sajĝ▫e.

Each and every hour, it is beaten; it is punished every day.

ਸੋ ਹੇੜਾ ਘੜੀਆਲ ਜਿਉ ਡ੝ਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੪੦॥

So heṛĝ gẖaṛī▫ĝl ji▫o dukẖī raiṇ vihĝ▫e. ||40||

This beautiful body is like the gong; it passes the night in pain. ||40||
