A sword is a long, edged piece of metal, used as a cutting, thrusting, and clubbing weapon in many civilizations throughout the world.

ਤਰਕਸ ਤੀਰ ਕਮਾਣ ਸਾਂਗ ਤੇਗਬੰਦ ਗ੝ਣ ਧਾਤ੝ ॥ The pursuit of virtue is my bow and arrow, my quiver, sword and scabbard.

ਜਾ ਤ੝ਧ੝ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਿਰ ਮ੝ੰਡੀ ਕਟਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥ When it pleases You, we wield the sword, and cut off the heads of our enemies.

ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮ੝ ॥ Lances and swords, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others

ਗ੝ਰ ਗਿਆਨ੝ ਖੜਗ੝ ਹਥਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਜਮ੝ ਮਾਰਿਅੜਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥੭॥ You hold in your hands the sword of the Guru's spiritual wisdom; with this destroyer of death, kill the Messenger of Death. ||7||

ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰੂ ਕਾ ਖੜਗ੝ ਸੰਜੋਉ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਤ੝ ਕਾਲ੝ ਕੰਟਕ੝ ਮਾਰਿ ਵਿਡਾਰਿਆ ॥ Devotional worship of the Lord is the sword and armor of the True Guru; He has killed and cast out Death, the torturer.

ਕਹਾ ਸ੝ ਤੇਗਬੰਦ ਗਾਡੇਰੜਿ ਕਹਾ ਸ੝ ਲਾਲ ਕਵਾਈ ॥ Where are the sword-belts and chariots? Where are those scarlet uniforms?

ਮ੝ਗਲ ਪਠਾਣਾ ਭਈ ਲੜਾਈ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ॥ The battle raged between the Mogals and the Pat'haans, and the swords clashed on the battlefield.

ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹ ਮੇਰ ਤੇਰ ਬਿਬਰਜਿਤ ਝਹ੝ ਮਾਰਗ੝ ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ॥੩॥ To forsake pride, emotional attachment, and the sense of 'mine and yours', is the path of the double-edged sword. ||3||

ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗ੝ ਹਥਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥ The True Guru has placed the sword of spiritual wisdom in my hands; I have overcome and slain the Messenger of Death.

ਪਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਸੀ ॥ Perfect is my honor, perfect is my intellect and password. I shall not have to come or go.

ਖੰਨਿਅਹ੝ ਤਿਖੀ ਬਹ੝ਤ੝ ਪਿਈਣੀ ॥ It is sharper than a two-edged sword, and very narrow.

ਖੰਨਿਅਹ੝ ਤਿਖੀ ਵਾਲਹ੝ ਨਿਕੀ ਝਤ੝ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ The path they take is sharper than a two-edged sword, and finer than a hair.

ਮਤਿ ਗ੝ਰ ਆਤਮ ਦੇਵ ਦੀ ਖੜਗਿ ਜੋਰਿ ਪਰਾਕ੝ਇ ਜੀਅ ਦੈ ॥ The Guru implanted the almighty sword of the Teachings to illuminate his soul.

ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕ੝ਰ ਕੈ ਦੀਬਾਨਿ ਖਬਰਿ ਹਈ ਗ੝ਰਿ ਗਿਆਨ੝ ਖੜਗ੝ ਲੈ ਮਾਰੇ ॥੭॥ When the news reached the Court of my Lord and Master, the Guru took up the sword of spiritual wisdom, and killed them. ||7||

ਜਮ ਪ੝ਰਿ ਵਜਹਿ ਖੜਗ ਕਰਾਰੇ ॥ In the City of Death, he is attacked with massive swords.

ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗ੝ ਲੈ ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ Taking up the sword of spiritual wisdom, she struggles with her mind, and hope and desire are smoothed over in her mind. ||3||

ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਗਲੀ ਅਤਿ ਭੀੜੀ ॥ This path is very narrow, like the sharp edge of a sword.

ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗ੝ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੀਨਾ ਦੂਤ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ In His Mercy, God has blessed me with the sword of spiritual wisdom; I have attacked and killed the demons. ||9||

ਗ੝ਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ੝ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਤਿ ਖੜਗ੝ ਕਰਾਰਾ ॥ From the Guru, I have obtained the supremely powerful sword of spiritual wisdom.

ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧ੝ ਨ ਬੂਝਈ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਮ ਖੜਗ੝ ਕਲਖਾ ॥ The blind and ignorant do not understand, that the sword of death is hanging over their heads.

ਹਾਥਿ ਖੜਗ੝ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਇਆ ਅਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥ With sword in hand, and with great egotistical pride, Prahlaad's father ran up to him.

ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗ੝ ਕੋਪਿਓ ਰਿਸਾਇ ॥ The king became angry and drew his sword.

ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗ੝ ਗ੝ਰ ਗਿਆਨ੝ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਬਿਖ੝ ਛੇਦਿ ਛੇਦਿ ਰਸ੝ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੩॥ Drawing out the Mighty Sword of the Guru's Spiritual Wisdom, I slaughter and kill the poisonous snakes, and drink in the Sweet Nectar. ||3||

ਰਿਦੈ ਛ੝ਰੀ ਸੰਧਿਆਨੀ ॥ But in your heart, you have drawn out the sword.

ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਗ੝ਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ With the sword of spiritual wisdom, kill the five demons. Remain awake and aware to the Guru's Teachings.
