The term or name Sayyid is an honorific title added to the names of males who claim decendance from the Muslim Rasul or Prophet Muhammad, Mohamet through his grandsons Hasan ibn' Ali and Husayn ibn' Ali.

The female equivalent title is Sayyida. If only the mother and not the father carries the blood of the Rasul their children may use the title/name Mirza but not the title Sayyid.
