Putana by remembering the Lord, Putana attained salvation; she, who was the fraudulent child-killer. (Gond Namdev, SGGS p. 874)

She, a female demon, was the daughter of Bali. She was known as a child-killer and 'was sent by Kansa to kill the baby Krishna. She applied poison to her teats and attempted to suckle the infant Krishna to death, but instead she herself was sucked to death by the divine child.

In Italy the word is used as a very derisive term for women (of a particular profession), a word often slung about in drunken anger by thoughtless (uluu) males.
