Pangong Lake is situated at an altitude of 4350mts above sea level in the northeast of Leh,some 140 km from Leh city. This is one of the most spactacular lakes in Ladakh. Its 40% area is in India and the rest is in China. This famous blue blackish lake of Pangong is 5-6 Km wide and over 144 long with half of it running to the other side of the Indo China border. While travelling from China to Ladakh this route was used by Guru Nanak. The long and narrow lake lies in the neighborhood of the famous Chushul Mountains on Indo China border. The size of the lake is best inferred from the etymology of its name Pangong which means 'extensive concavity' . Tso in Ladakhi means Lake.
