He was a scholar of Sanskrit and the Vedas which were not allowed to be taught to the children and adults of the, so called lower  Varnas (caste). Before Guru Nanak's teaching women (even of the higher castes) were not allowed or strongly encouraged not to study the Vedas.

Pandit Brij Lal a teacher of Guru Nanak in the village of Talwandi, Now known as Nanaki Saheb, located in modern day Pakistan in West Punjab. He was a scholar of Sanskrit and the Vedas which were not allowed to be taught to the children and adults of the, so called lower Varnas (caste). Before Guru Nanak's teaching women (even of the higher castes) were not allowed or strongly encouraged not to study the Vedas.
