Karori Mal (or Duni Chand) was the Governor of Kalanaur (about 14 Km from Kartarpur) in the time of Guru Nanak. Bothered by the number of Hindus and Muslims who were converting to Sikhism he set out to arrest the Guru, but mounting his horse he slipped and fell on the ground. His turban, a sign of his authority, fell to the ground rolling to a stop at the feet of a bystander.

On his second attempt, tradition has it that he became blind. Thinking that his misfortunes were the result of the ill will he had for Guru Nanak he ultimately fell at the feet of the Guru and apologised for his past ill will. The Guru blessed him notwithstanding and he became a devout Sikh of the Guru, donating 100 acres of land on the bank of river Ravi on which Guru founded Kartarpur.

Some historians say that Karori Mal is not the correct person in this story. They say the person associated with this story was Duni Chand a grandson of Jawahar Mal, after whom Jawahar street in Lahore was named.

Bakshi Bhagat Ram, a minister in Maharaja Ranjit Singh's court, was a descendant of this Karori Mal or Duni Chand.
