Jogi ਜੋਗੀ s  is a word used in Gurbani and represents a person who is striving to attain "Joog" or ਜੋਗ s  meaning "union" with God. The word "jogi" is commonly substituted as "yogi" in western society although the meaning of "jogi" in gurbani differs from the meaning given to the word "yogi" in modern society.

A Jogi is a person who follows a path to "union with God"; an ascetic, a saint, a Yogi, a devotee.


Gurbani

ਜੋਗੀ ਕਹਤ ਮ੝ਕਤਾ ॥ ਤਪਸੀ ਤਪਹਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
Jogī kahaṯ mukṯĝ. Ŧapsī ṯapėh rĝṯĝ. (2)
the Jogi speaks of liberation, and the ascetic is absorbed in self-denial, abstinence and austerity.(2)
