Guru Granth Sahib the boat: Difference between revisions

A boat is a watercraft designed to float on, and provide transport over, water. Usually this water will be inland or in protected coastal areas.. In this article the boat is considered as life and death.

ਨਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਾ ਤ੝ਲਹੜਾ ਨਾ ਪਾਈਝ ਪਿਰ੝ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥
ना बेड़ी ना तढ़लहड़ा ना पाईझ पिरढ़ दूरि ॥१॥
Nĝ bėṛī nĝ ṯulhaṛĝ nĝ pĝ­ī­ai pir ḝūr. ||1||
No boat or raft can take you to Him. Your Husband Lord is far away. ||1||

Gur pa­oṛī bėṛī gurū gur ṯulhĝ har nĝ­o.
The Guru is the Ladder, the Guru is the Boat, and the Guru is the Raft to take me to the Lord's Name.

Bikẖ bohithĝ lĝḝi­ĝ ḝī­ĝ samunḝ manjẖĝr.
The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea.

O my mind, without a boat, you shall not reach the other shore.

Chant the Name of the Lord. Build your boat, and pray, "O Merciful Lord, please be merciful to me."||1||

If you are a learned and wise religious scholar, then make a boat of the letters of the Lord's Name.

Page 1287, Line 15 ਬੰਧ੝ ਤ੝ਟਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾ ਤ੝ਲਹਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਥ ॥
बंधढ़ तढ़टा बेड़ी नही ना तढ़लहा ना हाथ ॥
Banḝẖ ṯutĝ bėṛī nahī nĝ ṯulhĝ nĝ hĝth.
The dam has burst. There is no boat. There is no raft. The water's depth is unfathomable.

सतिगढ़रढ़ बोहिथढ़ बेड़ढ़ सचा रखसी ॥
Saṯgur bohith bėṛ sacẖĝ rakẖsī.
So climb aboard the boat of the True Guru, and the True Lord will rescue you.

साइर सपत भरे जल निरमलि उलटी नाव तरावै ॥
Sĝ­ir sapaṯ bẖarė jal nirmal ultī nĝv ṯarĝvai.
The seven seas are overflowing with the Immaculate Water; the inverted boat floats across.

Page 1410, Line 10 ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ ਸਿਉ ਆਲਾਇ ਬੇੜੇ ਡ੝ਬਣਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਉ ॥੪॥
सतिगढ़र सिउ आलाइ बेड़े डढ़बणि नाहि भउ ॥४॥
Saṯgur si­o ĝlĝ­ė bėṛė dubaṇ nĝhi bẖa­o. ||4||
If you cry out for help from the True Guru, you have nothing to fear - your boat will not sink. ||4||

With the Shabad installed as the boatman, the Lord Himself shall take you across. In this way, the difficult ocean is crossed.

कागउ होइ न ऊजला लोहे नाव न पारढ़ ॥

The crow does not become white, and an iron boat does not float across.

Mūl rahai gur sėvi­ai gur pa­oṛī bohith.
Serving the Guru, his capital is preserved. The Guru is the ladder and the boat.

नानक सतिगढ़रि बोहिथै वडभागी चड़ै ते भउजलि पारि लंघाइ ॥३४॥
Nĝnak saṯgur bohithai vadbẖĝgī cẖaṛai ṯė bẖa­ojal pĝr langẖĝ­ė. ||34||
O Nanak, the very fortunate ones embark on the Boat of the True Guru; they are carried across the terrifying world-ocean. ||34||
