The Honourable Gurbax Singh Malhi was first elected to the House of Commons in 1993. He was re-elected in 1997 and again in November of 2000, and was the first turbaned member of Parliament in the western world. Mr. Malhi is also the recipient of a Cultural Doctorate in Cultural Philosophy.

Mr. Malhi is currently the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, with Special Emphasis on Entrepreneurs and New Canadians. Previously, Mr. Malhi was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, and served as a member of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development.

He has been the Chairman of the House of Commons Standing Committee for the Library of Parliament, and has served as a member of the Standing Committees on Industry, Scrutiny of Regulations, Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights, Government Operations, and Procedure and House Affairs. Mr. Malhi also served as Chair of the Canada-South Asia Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Prior to entering politics, Mr. Malhi was the President of the Bramalea-Gore-Malton Federal Liberal Riding Association. He has been an active member of the community and has acted as a Director of the Malton Neighbourhood Services. He has been a volunteer member of the Peel Police Ethnic Race Relations Committee, and a volunteer member of the Parent's Advisory Council of Marvin Heights Public School in Mississauga. A successful businessman, he is a member of the Toronto Real Estate Board.
