Jainism/

Jainism is one of the native religions of India. In the history of the religious tradition of India, Jainism occupies a place of immense eminence because of the fact that it has a great impact on Indian thought and culture. It represents the continu¬ation of indigenous 'Sramanic culture or ascetic cult which can be traced back to the Harappan age. The imprints on some seals of that period exhibiting nude ascetics in yogic posture remind us of this cult which believes in stern asceticism and yogic practices. Traditionally it is considered that Vardhaman or Mahavira (Great Hero) was the founder of the organized movement historically known as Jainism. According to Jain Scriptures be was the last of the 24 Tirthankaras, who had through asceticism attained release, and served to encourage man in his hard search for moksha.
Lord Mahavira was not the founder of a new doctrine but the reformer of an ascetic religion already in existence. One cannot think of Jainism without Jaina asceticism. Lord Mahavira and his preceding twenty-three Tirthankars were ideal monks and ascetics first, and then preachers and preceptors.
