This is normally a final verse or a verse found at the beginning of a Bani composition. The final verse in the morning prayer of the Sikhs, called the Japji Sahib, is a Salok and this Bani is given below with the original Gurmukhi verse with the English transliteration and translation:
Salok in Japji
ਸਲੋਕ ॥ ਪਵਣ ਗਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਮਹਤ ॥ |
Salok. Pavaṇ gurū pĝṇī piṯĝ mĝṯĝ ḝẖaraṯ mahaṯ. |
Shalok: Air is the Guru, Water is the Father, and Earth is the Great Mother of all. |
Salok in Sukhmani
Each of the 24 sections of the Bani composition of Sukhmani sahib starts with a salok. The very beginning of this bani is given below:
ਗਉੜੀ ਸਖਮਨੀ ਮ: ੫ ॥ ਸਲੋਕ ॥ |
