Uttam singh is a music direstor. Uttam Singh was born on 25th May 1948. He came to Mumbai in 1960 with his parents.He learned how to play Tabla when he was only 5- 6 years old. Western violin being his passion, he started learning it the day soon after he arrived in the city.

He belongs to quite a rich family that took to singing kirtanas at various Gurudwaras and religious functions to supplement their income.He worked as a violinist in his struggling years.The first break came in 1963 as a violinist for a documentary being made by Mohammad Safi, an assistant to Naushad. Uttam Singh has played the stringed instrument for all the leading composers of the early sixties and seventies from Naushad, Roshan, Madan Mohan, C. Ramachandra, S. D. Burman and others. Later on he became the main violinist of the late R. D. Burman.

He worked with Jagdish for a couple of years.Uttam Singh worked as an arranger for about 65 films in various languages of the country including Tamil, Malayalam, Konkani, Gujrati, Marathi, Haryanvi and Punjabi. Their biggest successes as arrangers were the mammoth Rajshri hits Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989 and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Jagdish passed away in 1992.

Manoj Kumar provided the break to the duo Uttam - Jagdish in film Painter Babu. Uttam's subsequent venture Clerk, was a major failure. Another film for which they had composed music was Waaris, which had some good numbers including Uttam Singh’s personal favourite sung by the inimitable Kishore Kumar, ‘Husn Ki Wadiyon Mein’. Uttam again composed for daughter Preeti Uttam’s Sur,released in 2002 ,which had Indian Classical music for its base at a time when beats were burgeoning.

He was back with success of Dil To Pagal Hai and his later films include Gaddar, featuring a 20 minute song spread over the length of the film, Pyar Deewana Hota Hai and Shahaadat.
