Comments about the "picture" of Guru Gobind Singh
Many thanks for your comments. Many Sikhs appear to hold this view. Personally, I cannot understand the objection to the "pictures" of the Gurus as long as they comply with the the general view expressed by historical records or by view expressed by other writers of the time. I do not think that most Sikhs would "worship" these pictures.

I have a very poor quality black & white photo of my Granddad - As the quality of the picture is not very good, it's not a very good likeness of him - But it reminds me of him and the goodness in him. It motivates me to be like him; to aspire to tread on the path of righteousness like he did; to work hard and to be dedicated to family life - just like him. I do not use the picture to "worship" him!- appreciate him - yes, but not worship. Most people use these pictures as an icon to remember the Gurus. We use images & icons to remember things. This is the same thing.

I have never come across any Hukamnama forbidding these picture nor any tuk in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. I would be most interested in seeing any proof that you may have either from SGGS or other Bani or other Sikh authorities. Unless we have concrete proof, we should deal with these questions in a logical and moderate way. Sikhi and Sikhs are not weak that a mere picture will result in them losing their connection with the Guru.

I am not sure which picture of Guru Nanak Dev you are referring to - but if it show Guru ji in his 60s walking, it could be the Guru walking from Kartarpur towards "Amritsar" in about 1535 to bless the sangat there.

Please have an open mind. It is good to discuss and have a dialogue because we all learn from these "conversations". If these pictures distract you, then don't have them. However, if it helps others remember their Gurus, then please don't deny them that right.

Please forgive me for a rather hasty and depth-less reply but it is late and I am tired but I thought I must reply to your intriguing query - a view often expressed by many Sikhs. Kind regards, Hari Singh 20:48, 12 July 2007 (EDT)
