I am a Canadian Sikh who is on a spiritual journey, trying to live life as I understand it according to Sikh principles. Though I make mistakes, I try to be a better person by being a better Sikh. Sikhism is a life path and trying to stay on that path requires understanding and a genuine desire to implement Guru Ji's teachings into practical life. Calling yourself a Sikh without working towards being one is hypocritical.

In order to keep Sikhi alive, one must practice the faith and not just discuss or engage in endless guftgu. I believe strongly in the concept of MIRI-PIRI. The martial and the spiritual must be there in equal parts for both men and women in order to fulfill our obligations as Sikhs. People who call themselves Sikhs based on their outward appearance and dedication to nitnem and simran without having any martial capabilities are the same as those who call themselves Sikhs and have no outward appearance or dedication to nitnem and simran. Both are lacking, the only true Sikhs are those who have both MIRI and PIRI. Without Miri, the Pir cannot put into practice the values and principles of Sikhism as laid down by the Gurus, including justice and equality. Without Piri, the warrior doesn't have the guiding hand of God or Guru in staying within the bounds of truth in battle or war.
