MOHALI: In a clear indication of power going to his head, a traffic cop on Saturday recklessly ran over two hapless children after hitting them and their mother at the Mohalis, phases II and IV, roundabout. While Sawarn Kaur sustained minor injuries, her critically injured son Ishu, 7 and daughter Simran, 5 were declared dead upon arrival by doctors at PGI, Chandigarh.

The three were crossing the road when Parminder Singh, posted as a head constable with Mohali traffic police, did not bother to see that little children were ahead of him and hit the accelerator, ramming the children and mother before driving over them. Stunned eyewitnesses said the car was being driven at such a high speed that the cop could not control it even after the accident.

The badly damaged bonnet of the car bore marks of the tragic tale. Passers-by informed the police and emergency vehicles were called in to take the victims to hospital. A PGI doctor said that both kids (students of Sant

Ishwar Singh Public School, Sector-71) suffered multiple injuries, especially on their heads and died before they were brought to the hospital.

Kaur, a homemaker, was given first-aid at the scene of the accident. The heart-broken father of the deceased, Dalbeer Singh, employed with a private company, was too stunned to speak as he mourned the death of his kids whom he had shifted to their new house in Phase-XI, Mohali, only 15 days back. Equally inconsolable relatives said the three were on their way to the market to do some shopping ahead of a wedding in the family.

Arresting the killer cop after registering a case, Harbeer Singh Atwal, station house officer, Phase-I, Mohali said, We have arrested Parminder Singh and his medical examination will soon be conducted. An inquiry has also been initiated.

The accused will be produced in the district court on Monday when the victims' school will also be holding a condolence meeting.
