All the stories I have read of this, the singer was a girl and I have always read of then going on their pilgrimage on foot. Wearing gongras would not work well on horseback. But the many versions I have read of his going to visit Guru Nanak have had him completing his duty as the leader of the group and later going by horseback to meet Guru Nanak.
