Question: Only a Sikh may perform kirtan in a congregation. Reading this I may believe that I should keep my mouth shut and not sing even if others (Sikhs) are or does this mean that only a Sikh can perform or Sing Kirtan to the Sangat. Either seems exclusive and not Gurmat. Why have four doors to admit all if all cannot participate equally?

Guru Nanak Dev said there is no Musalman, there is no Hindu - he spoke of equality before the American constitution and called for equality for women long before -- anyone?

Guru Arjan, according to his father's wishes invited Hazrat Mian Mir to lay the foundation of the Harminer Sahib and designed the building's plan so that people who believed there were only certain directions for proper worship could enter from all sides.

But according to 4/5/p-q,

(p) There are five Takhts (lit, thrones, fig., seats of high authority) namely -

(I) The holy Akal Takht Amritsar (II) The holy Takht, Patna Sahib (III) The holy Takht, Kesgarh Sahib, Anandpur (IV) The holy Takht Hazur Sahib, Nanded (V) The holy Takht Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo.

(q) Only an Amritdhari (baptized) Sikh man or woman, who faithfully observes the discipline ordained for the baptized Sikhs, can enter the hallowed enclosures of the Takhts.

Does not this go against the very reason for Sikhi reversing the designs and intentions of Guru Nanak and Guru Arjan. When and by whom were such rules of exclusivity passed. This reminds me of the behavior of Old Hindu Brahmins who own Hindu temples, passed down through a particular family for centuries who keep all non Hindus (specifically foriegners who are considered to be of the same low castes as the Indians they did not allow to enter their temples or read their Holy texts).

This means that non-Sikhs, even Sikhs sans beards or the other 5 Ks can never view the treasures of the toshkhannas. No wonder that so many, not of the Sikh faith, stood for hours even in inclimate weather to view the weapons and Bir from the Takhat during the Yagity Yatra's trip throught India.

That brings me to the line that says I may not read to the Sangat from the SGGS, yet it says I may read from the open SGGS in a Gurdwara--when?

Specifically this was a lot of work and answers many of my questions i have asked, I want to thank you, Jarnail ji, for going to the trouble.

Sikh rehat Maryada

Sir Jee i just uploaded the Sikh rehat maryada which was decided but know it needs changes as we all know many many many of sikhs are now Rauda(Inhead).

My Views:Only a Sikh may perform kirtan in a congregation :

I knew Bhai Chaman Lal was hindu and perform kirtan, Even Bhai Mardana Decendents performs the kirtan and they are muslims.

A person who is sitting at top aside of guru granth sahib (Ragi kirtanis) should look sikh physically, mentally and spiritually. Well other religon people are supposed to sing gurus rhymes but i think its better that only gursikhs amritdharis should sit aside of guru.

So performing kirtan is something else do not confuse it with that you cant sing gurus rhymes or to preach guru rhymes. Main thing is this i prefer amritdhari persons read guru granth sahib(In physical Roop). I suggested non amritdhari sikhs like me not to sit before guru granth sahi(Physical Roop).

Maryada is known to a amritdhari sikh but not like me tucha - rucha sikh. Guru granth sahib is not a book, not a holy book, he is guru, so first sit in congregation hear what guru says adopt the teachings and then a person will have right to sit before guru.

Like do good works, treat god your father, help human beings then wish for heaven.

How it looks if Osama Bin Laden Is reading Guru Granth Sahib in a gurdwara? Even he do not know the meaning of that? How it looks like Jarnail Singh is reading quran, reading bible it feels quite au chau rau.

A person should not make its own maryada.
