research from various sites:

Poonch gave a tough fight to Mahmood Ghazanavi who invaded this area in 1020 A.D. In 1596, Mughal King Jahangir made Siraj-Ud-Din ruler of Poonch. Siraj-Ud-Din and hisdescendent Raja Shahbaz Khan, Raja Abdul Razak, Raja Rustam Khan and Raja Khan Bahadur Khan ruled this area upto 1792 AD. In 1819 this area was captured by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh and it remained under the occupation of Khalsa Darbar of Lahore till 1850. In 1850, Raja Moti Singh who was son of Raja Dhayan Singh, the Prime Minister of Khalsa Darbar set up its separate Principality known as Poonch state. This dogra dynasty ruled Poonch state

Moti Mahal : Moti Mahal is situated on the outskirts of Poonch city. It is the most imposing of the palaces in and around the city of Poonh. The foundation of Moti Mahal was laid by Raja Sukhdev Singh on 15 February 1926 and it took nearly ten years for its construction. The palace has a British design with sloping red roofs, dormer windows and wide eave boards though its architecture was actually developed by a Sindhi engineer. The location of the place has in the background the Garhi Jungle. This was the Maharaja’s personal shooting enclave but is now a mostly barren feature. Some of the trees in the palace grounds are over 200 years old. Moti Mahal has been associated with the Indian Army since 1947 when Brig. Pritam Singh first made it the Headquarters of the gallant Brigade which held on through the siege for almost a year till the Poonch Link Up. this is also a good article[1]

Jammu, October 8 The earthquake that rocked northern India did not spare four historical monuments in the Jammu region where at least 200 houses suffered major damage, most of them in the twin border districts of Poonch and Jammu.

The first to give in to the severe tremors was the roof of Moti Mahal in Poonch, housing the Brigade headquarters. It was Raja Sukhdev Singh who had laid the foundation stone of the mahal on February 15,1926. It took the Maharaja 16 years to complete its construction.

Years of neglect had already damaged portions of the mahal having a British design with sloping red roofs and dormen windows. In the 1947 conflict with Pakistan, Brig Pritam Singh used the mahal as the first headquarters of his Gallant Brigade. Since then, it has been under the occupation of the Army.
