Anyone with more patience than me could condense the page and make it a better article which might be read through. many questions are raised but repeated over and over and over.Allenwalla 13:12, 30 March 2008 (MDT)

I am not generally very happy with this article. It does not meet my expectation of an unbiased way in which we should approach writing about other faiths. Maharaj effectively say - Don't criticise the Koran or Vedas, etc. but the ones who do not follow the path of righteousness? Further, I am not happy with the criticisms of anyone without solid proof or references. As Sikhs, should we denigrate others? How does that help us become better people? Especially as we have no proof! Does this not become "nindeea" or "back biting"? Need to review this article - I agree with the comments by Richard Allenwalla. Hari Singh 14:16, 30 March 2008 (MDT)

third para - A resting place for the Sun?

(Quran 36: 38) And the sun runneth on unto a resting place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise.

(Quran 36: 39) And for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm leaf.

(Quran 36: 40) It is not for Sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.

Allah is indeed a big scientist. Where are the sun and moon situated? Can anybody tell me how they could collide/meet/overtake each other? Are the sun and the moon neighbors to each other? I have the answer for this error: Ancient Allah saw (bare eye observations) sun and moon traveling from east to west seemingly in the same Sky area or same path, without colliding, causing day and night etc. Allah hardly could imagine that all these phenomena are simply due to Earth’s rotation and NOT by Sun’s rotation. Sun is stationary for Earth, because the earth is caught in the sun’s Gravity, like we are caught in earth’s gravity. Allah never says, any where in the whole Quran that, the EARTH ROTATES. Perhaps Allah could not feel the earth’s rotation.

A better translation[1] is by the University of Southern California which lists 3 version of translation in English for each line:

38. And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.

What wrong with this? - If you are unbiased, this line make good sense to a person living in 700 AD. If you try and explain it any other way, the poor guys would not have understood! In relative terms, the sun travels in a path predetermined for it by the exalt and mighty Lord. A stationary person would see it for a period of time. There is no mention of "resting place" in this translation or another one by "SHAKIR" [2]

39. And the Moon,- We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date-stalk.

Again in terms of movement, the moon grows like a date stalk from a new moon to a full moon; then withers like a date stalk to a waning crescent and than no moon. This seems Ok to me.

40. It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).

This probably addresses the fears that people had during those times. The night might last for a long time or the sun and moon may collide. This line appears to be in the language that the Arabs could understand shows clearly that the sun & moon are on different trajectories or orbits never to meet. This help alleviate the serious worries of the people of that time who had no understanding of science. Also note that it does not say that the Sun goes around the Earth - it just says that the sun and moon are in different orbit - which we know they are.

One needs to remember that the original Arabic from 700 AD is not easy to understand and translate into English.

Further, as Gur Sikhs, we must remember that our Gurus were aware of the Koran but as far as I know have never criticised it or talked down anything that it said. Should we not follow their example? Our task is to understand Gurbani NOT to make judgement about the holy text of others which we have not properly studied or have proper knowledge.

What are your thoughts? Share them with us in a civil manner. das, Hari Singh 20:21, 1 April 2008 (MDT) References
