Gurcharan Singh Rishi

Gurcharan Singh Rishi, a victim of the anti-sikh riots, who was severely burned over half of his body and has been bed ridden for the last 25 years at the residence of his two brothers, in Mohali, near Chandigarh, has died without seeing any justice.

During the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, he was thrown into a burning vehicle in front of his house in Uttam Nagar, New Delhi. He said that his suffering was caused by Sajjan Kumar, who led the mob.

He survived the ordeal with the help of his wife. They were rescued by Bonnie and Tarlok Chand, Dalit Hindu neighbors, who helped to keep him alive, after the mob had left. At the risk of their own lives the these people helped to keep him alive him for three days by hiding them in the burned out ruins of a relative's home.

  • The mob led by Sajan Kumar, started beating his father and his maternal uncle Santokh Singh who died on the spot. All his family started hiding in the house, but his brother was injured.
  • He was hiding in the kitchen, where he was overpowered by members of the mob who carried him outside and threw him into a burning truck outside their house.
  • He and his father were taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he was given only some minor medical attention, before being abruptly discharged. Because of the lack of proper immediate medical attention, he still had many open wounds on his legs and knees.
  • He has registered an FIR in Delhi and Mohali a couple of times, but no officials have paid any attention to his charges.
  • He has never received a single rupee in compensation from the Indian Govt.
  • His family approached the All-India Sikh Student Federation (AISSF) president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad. Through him, he told media persons that he saw Sajjan Kumar inciting his henchmen at Navada in Delhi, before they went on a rampage setting fire to many Sikh homes and businesses as well as burning down Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Mohan Garden, where his father was the president.
