Question : According to our religious teachings we should do our prayers in the wee hours of morning during 'amritwela' which is more powerful. But if by not doing then but later in late morning, are our mornings prayers still useful.

Answer : Prayers are useful at all times. Prayers are to be done at all times. Prayers should not be forsaken at anytime. You life would be useless and meaningless without Prayers... but having said that,

there are important reasons behind some prayers being subscribed to the early hours of the morning and other left to other times. To understand these reasons and hidden benefits of doing them at those specific times, we have to be as elevated as the Masters and Guru Jis who prescribed us these :

Eeyvd Ooocha Hoveh Koee | Tes Ooochey Ko Janeh Soee | (5-10, jpu, mhlw 1)

Only one as Great and as High as God, can know His Lofty and Exalted State. (and thus understand the logic behind the instructions left to us)

Rise and shine! The early morning hours before the world awakens are known as the Amrit Vela – the Ambrosial Hours. These are the ideal for a spiritual practice that leads you back to what is important in life.

The logical mind, always tries to rationalise and justify that doing these specific prayers at other times would still have the same net effect. But this is far from the truth...

Ask a Doctor, why he prescribed a certain medicine to be taken preciously at given times, and for a given period and he will tell you all the positive effects it would have. Not following the said instruction may not heal us as quickly and effectively and in the same way, the medicinal effect to our soul, from doing the correct prayers at the correct time may be lessened if we do not follow the prescription.

To just reaffirm what Guru Ji says about AmritVela :

Aanmert Veyla Sch Nao Vdeaaei Vechar | (144-8, mwJ, mhlw 1)

In the Amrit Vaylaa, the ambrosial hours before dawn, chant the True Name, and contemplate His Glorious Greatness.

Jhalaghey Outhe Nam Jpe Nese Basur Aaradhe | Karha Tujheh N Beaapei Nank Meteh Oupadhe |1| (255-6, gauVI, mhlw 5)

Rise early in the morning, and chant the Naam; worship and adore Waheguru Ji, night and day. Anxiety shall not afflict you, O Nanak, and your misfortune shall vanish. ||1||

Outh Phrida Oujoo Saje Subh Nevaj Gujare | Jo Ser Sanei Na Neveh So Ser Kpe Outare |71| (1381-13, slok, syK PrId)

Rise up, Fareed, and cleanse yourself; chant your morning prayer. The head which does not bow to Waheguru Ji - chop off and remove that head. ||71||

Babiha Aanmert Veyleh Boleaa Tan Dre Suni Pukar | (1285-3, mlwr, mhlw 3)

The rainbird chirps in the ambrosial hours of the morning before the dawn; its prayers are heard in the Court of Waheguru Ji.

Vdareh Jhale Jhluanbhleh Navara Leiaeh Kes | Nao Leiaeh Prmeysreh Bhannn Gharn Smrth |62| (1420-15, slok vwrW qy vDIk, mhlw 3)

In the early hours of the morning, whose name should we chant? Chant the Name of the Transcendent Waheguru Ji, who is All-powerful to create and destroy. ||62||

Hre Dhn Rtn Jveyhr Mank Hre Dhneh Nale Aanmert Veyleh Vteh Hre Bhgti Hre Lev Laei | Hre Dhn Aanmert Veyleh Vteh Ka Bijeaa Bhgt Khaee Khrche Rhey Nekhuteh Nahi | Hlte Plte Hre Dhneh Ki Bhgta Ko Meli Vdeaaei |3| (734-4, sUhI, mhlw 4)

Waheguru Ji's wealth is like jewels, gems and rubies. At the appointed time in the Amrit Vaylaa, the ambrosial hours of the morning, Waheguru Ji's devotees lovingly center their attention on Waheguru Ji, and the wealth of Waheguru Ji. The devotees of Waheguru Ji plant the seed of Waheguru Ji's wealth in the ambrosial hours of the Amrit Vaylaa; they eat it, and spend it, but it is never exhausted. In this world and the next, the devotees are blessed with glorious greatness, the wealth of Waheguru Ji. ||3||

Early morning prayer hours are usually from 12:15 am to 6 a.m. This silent time before the world wakes up allows you a still space to remember who you are. Two and a half hours may seem like a long time for a spiritual practice. Any amount of time in the morning, though, can be a good start. Setting your clock back half an hour to provide time for a spiritual practice can reap tremendous benefits. If nothing else, it requires intention and discipline to let go of that extra half hour of sleep in favor of reconnecting with your highest inner self and remembering who you are beyond your every day responsibilities. It is so easy to get caught up in the routine of life and forget that it has a higher purpose than running around taking care of deadlines and errands.

Also, Guru Ji says in Gurbani that if you call yourself the Sikh of a Guru, then there are no 2 ways about this ....

Gur Stegur Ka Jo Sekh Akhaeey S Bhlkey Outhe Hre Nam Dheaaveh | (305-16, gauVI kI vwr, mhlw 4)

One who calls himself a Sikh of Guru Ji, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on Waheguru Ji's Name.

So You are a Sikh of the Guru Ji, aren't you ? :o)

Another good point is that not all people can awake at this heavenly hour, but only those who are blessed with good Karma by God himself. Guru Ji says :

Krmvanti Salaheaa Nank Kre Gur Pir | Choutheh Phre Sbah Keh Surteaa Oupjeh Chao | Tena Driaava Seo Dosti Mne Mukhe Scha Nao | Otheh Aanmert Vandiaeh Krmi Hoee Psao | (146-10, mwJ, mhlw 2)

Those blessed with the karma of good actions praise Waheguru Ji. O Nanak, they make Guru Ji their spiritual teacher. In the fourth watch of the early morning hours, a longing arises in their higher consciousness. They are attuned to the river of life; the True Name is in their minds and on their lips. The Ambrosial Nectar is distributed, and those with good karma receive this gift.

Moving forward, Guru Ji in fact proposes that at these Ambroisial hours, God himself comes to your home, if you connect with Him ! Not just your mind, body and soul, but also your home and possessions and all around are cleansed by this :

Bhlkey Outhe Prahuna Meyreh Ghre Aavo | Pao Pkhala Tes Key Mne Tne Net Bhavo | Nam Suney Nam Sangrheh Namey Lev Lavo |Nam Suney Nam Sangrheh Namey Lev Lavo | Hre Nam Vapari Nanka Vdbhagi Pavo |2| (318-5, gauVI kI vwr, mhlw 5)

I rise up in the early morning hours, and the Holy Guest comes into my home. I wash His feet; He is always pleasing to my mind and body. I hear the Naam, and I gather in the Naam; I am lovingly attuned to the Naam. My home and wealth are totally sanctified as I sing the Glorious Praises of Waheguru Ji. The Trader in Waheguru Ji's Name, O Nanak, is found by great good fortune. ||2||

Prathkal Lago Jn Chrni Nes Basur Drs Pavo | Tn Mn Arpe Kro Jn Seyva Rsna Hre Gun Gavo |1| (533-10, dyvgMDwrI mhlw 5)

In the early hours of the morning, I fall at the feet of Your humble servants; night and day, I obtain the Blessed Vision of their Darshan. Dedicating my body and mind, I serve the humble servant of Waheguru Ji; with my tongue, I sing the Glorious Praises of Waheguru Ji. ||1||

Also, do you want to ensure that you have a wonderful life here in this world and also the world ahead and want all your sins to be washed, erased and forgiving ? Want to achieve salvation ? then Guru Ji suggests :

Prathkle Hre Nam Ouchari | Sda Sda Jpiaeh Hre Nam | (743-5, sUhI, mhlw 5)

In the early hours of the morning, I chant Waheguru Ji's Name. I have fashioned a shelter for myself, hear and hereafter. ||1||

Run Jhuno Sbd Anahd Net Outhe Gaeiaeh Santn Keh | Kelvekh Sbhe Dokh Benasn Hre Nam Jpiaeh Gur Mantn Keh | (925-14, rwmklI, mhlw 5)

Rise early each morning, and with the Saints, sing the melodious harmony, the unstruck sound current of the Shabad. All sins and sufferings are erased, chanting Waheguru Ji's Name, under Guru's Instructions.

Prbhatey Prbh Name Jpe Gur Key Chrn Dheaaee | Jnm Mrn Ml Outreh Schey Key Gun Gaee |1| (1099-17, mwrU, mhlw 5)

In the early hours of the morning, chant the Name of God, and meditate on the Feet of Guru Ji. The filth of birth and death is erased, singing the Glorious Praises of the True Waheguru Ji. ||1||

Outhe Eesnan Krho Prbhatey Soeey Hre Aaradhey | Bekharey Dao LµGhaveh Meyra Stegur Sukh Shj Seyti Ghre Jatey |3| (1185-13, bsMqu ihMfol, mhlw 5)

Rise in the early hours of the morning, and take your cleansing bath. Before you go to bed at night, remember to worship Waheguru Ji. My True Guru will assist you, even on your most difficult moves; you shall reach your true home in celestial peace and poise. ||3||

To conclude, An intellectual answer, like this one, could easily be given and lengthened; however it is preferred that this question be answered from within. For that, you would need to start waking up at amrit vela (anytime from 12.15 am to 6 am ) and jap naam and do your prayers for as long as possible and within a month, this question will be answered.
