SECTION

ਅਥ ਅਤਕਾਇ ਦਈਤ ਜ੝ੱਧ ਕਥਨੰ ॥

Now begins the description of the war with the demon Atkaaye :

ਸੰਗੀਤ ਪਧਿਸਟਕਾ ਛੰਦ ॥

SANGEET PADHISTAKA STANZA

ਕਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਕੋਪ ਕੈ ਦਈਤ ਰਾਜ ॥ ਜਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਜ੝ੱਧ ਕੋ ਸਜਿਯੋ ਸਾਜ ॥

The demon-king in great fury, began the war,

ਬਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਬੀਰ ਬ੝ੱਲੇ ਅਨੰਤ ॥ ਰਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਰੋਸ ਰੋਹੇ ਦ੝ਰੰਤ ॥੪੮੩॥

Calling his innumerable warriors, full of resentment and very wrathful.483.

ਪਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਪਰਮ ਬਾਜੀ ਬ੝ਲੰਤ ॥ ਚਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਚੱਤ੝ਰ ਨਟ ਜਿਯੋਂ ਕ੝ਦੰਤ ॥

Very swift-moving horses were brought who jumped hither and thither like and actor;

ਕਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਕ੝ਰੂਰ ਕੱਢੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ॥ ਆਗੜਦੰਗ ਆਨਿ ਬੱਜੇ ਜ੝ਝਾਰ ॥੪੮੪॥

Taking out their frightening weapons, the warriors began to fight with one another.484.

ਰਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਰਾਮ ਸੈਨਾ ਸ੝ ਕ੝ਰ੝ੱਧ ॥ ਜਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਜ੝ਵਾਨ ਜ੝ਝੰਤ ਜ੝ੱਧ ॥

On this side, the warriors in the army of Ram, started fighting in great rage;

ਨਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਨਿਸਾਣ ਨਵ ਸੈਨ ਸਾਜਿ ॥ ਮਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਮੂੜ ਮਕਰਾਛ ਗਾਜਿ ॥੪੮੫॥

The foolish Makrachh thundered, carrying his new banner.485.

ਆਗੜਦੰਗ ਝਕ ਅਤਿਕਾਇ ਵੀਰ ॥ ਰਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਰੋਸ ਕੀਨੇ ਗਹੀਰ ॥

There was one demon named Atkaaye in the demon forces who rushed with serious fury;

ਆਗੜਦੰਗ ਝਕਹ੝ੱਕੇ ਅਨੇਕ ॥ ਸਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਸਿੰਧ੝ ਬੇਲਾ ਬਿਬੇਕ੝ ॥੪੮੬॥

Many warriors confronted him and began to fight with discriminating intellect.486.

ਤਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਤੀਰ ਛ੝ਟੈ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ ਬਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਬੂੰਦ ਬਨ ਦਲ ਅਨੂਆਰ ॥

There was huge shower of arrows which fell like rain-drops;

ਆਗੜਦੰਗ ਅਰਥ ਟੀਡੀ ਪ੝ਰਮਾਨ ॥ ਚਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਚਾਰ੝ ਚੀਟੀ ਸਮਾਨ ॥੪੮੭॥

The army looked like locusts and array of ants.487.

ਬਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਬੀਰ ਬਾਹ੝ੜੇ ਨੇਖ ॥ ਜਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਜ੝ੰਧ ਅਤਕਾਇ ਦੇਖਿ ॥

The warriors reached near Atkaaye in order to see him fighting.

ਦਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਦੇਵ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਹੰਤ ॥ ਭਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਭੂਪ ਧਨ ਧਨ ਭਨੰਤ ॥੪੮੮॥

The gods hailed him and the king uttered "Bravo, Bravo !".488.

ਕਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਕਹਕ ਕਾਲੀ ਕਰਾਲ ॥ ਜਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਜੂਹ ਜ੝ੱਗਣ ਬਿਸਾਲ ॥

The terrible goddess Kali began to shout and great number of Yoginis roamed in the battlefield.

ਭਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਭੂਤ ਭੈਰੋ ਅਨੰਤ ॥ ਸਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਸ੝ਰੋਣ ਪਾਣੰ ਕਰੰਤ ॥੪੮੯॥

Innumerable Bhairvas and ghosts began to drink blood.489.

ਡਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਡਉਰ ਡਾਕਣਿ ਡਹੱਕ ॥ ਕਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਕ੝ਰੂਰ ਕਾਕੰ ਕਹੱਕ ॥

The tabors of vampires sounded and the inauspicious crows began to caw;

ਚਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਚਤ੝ਰ ਚਾਵਡੀ ਚਿਕਾਰ ॥ ਭਾਗੜਦੰਗ ਭੂਤ ਡਾਰਤ ਧਮਾਰ ॥੪੯੦॥

On all the four sides there were heard and seen shrieks of vultures and leapings and hopping of ghosts and fiends.490.

ਹੋਹਾ ਛੰਦ ॥

HOHA STANZA

ਟ੝ਟੇ ਪਰੇ ॥ ਨਵੇ ਮ੝ਰੇ ॥ ਅਸੰ ਧਰੇ ॥ ਰਿਸੰ ਭਰੇ ॥੪੯੧॥

The warriors felt weakness and then regained strength and in rage caught hold of their swords.491.

ਛ੝ਟੰ ਸਰੰ ॥ ਚਕਿਯੋ ਹਰੰ॥ਰ੝ਕੀ ਦਿਸੰ॥ ਚਪੇ ਕਿਸੰ ॥੪੯੨॥

Seeing the discharge of arrows the clouds wondered; because of the arrows all the sides were hindered.492.

ਛ੝ਟੰ ਸਰੰ ॥ ਰਿਸੰ ਭਰੰ ॥ ਗਿਰੈ ਭਟੰ ॥ ਜਿਮੰ ਅਟੰ ॥੪੯੩॥

The arrows are being discharged in fury and the warriors are falling on the earth like the earth like the effacement of the through ones.493.

ਘ੝ਮੇ ਘਯੰ ॥ ਭਰੇ ਭਯੰ ॥ ਚਪੇ ਚਲੇ ॥ ਭਟੰ ਭਲੇ ॥੪੯੪॥

The frightened warriors, while wandering, are being wounded and great heroes are flying fast.494.

ਰਟੈ ਹਰੰ ॥ ਰਿਸੰ ਜਰੰ ॥ ਰ੝ਪੈ ਰਣੰ ॥ ਘ੝ਮੇ ਬ੝ਰਣੰ ॥੪੯੫॥

They are reciting the name of Shiva in order to kill the enemies with jealousy in their mind and they are tighting in the field wandering with fear.495.

ਗਿਰੈ ਧਰੰ ॥ ਹ੝ਲੈ ਨਰੰ ॥ ਸਰੰ ਤਛੇ ॥ ਕਛੰ ਕਛੇ ॥੪੯੬॥

The people are getting delighted with the falling of demons on the earth; the arrows are penetrating into the demons and the warriors are being crushed.496.

ਘ੝ਮੇ ਬ੝ਰਣੰ ॥ ਭ੝ਰਮੇ ਰਣੰ ॥ ਲਜੰ ਫਸੇ ॥ ਕਟੰ ਕਸੇ ॥੪੯੭॥

The wounded warriors are wandering and writhing in the battlefield; they are feeling shy in being entrapped, having been girdled.497.

ਧ੝ਕੇ ਧਕੰ ॥ ਟ੝ਕੇ ਟਕੰ ॥ ਛ੝ਟੇ ਸਰੰ ॥ ਰ੝ਕੇ ਦਿਸੰ ॥੪੯੮॥

The throbbing of the hearts continues, the arrows are being discharged intermittently and the directions are being hindered.498.

ਛਪੈ ਛੰਦ ॥

CHHAPAI STANZA

ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਆਰ੝ਹੇ ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕਨ ਕਹ ਤੱਕੈ ॥

The warriors excelling one another are coming and looking at each other one by one;

ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਲੈ ਚਲੈ ਇੱਕ ਕਹ ਇੱਕ ਉਚੱਕੈ ॥

They are moving with each one and are being startle by each one;

ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਸਰ ਬਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਧਨ ਕਰਖਿ ਰੋਸ ਭਰਿ ॥

On one side they are discharging arrows and on the other they are pulling their bows in rage;

ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਤਰਫੰਤ ਇੱਕ ਭਵ ਸਿੰਧ ਗਝ ਤਰਿ ॥

On one side the fighters are writing and on the other side the dead ones are ferrying across the world-ocean;

ਰਣਿ ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਵੰਤ ਭਿੜੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਹ੝ਝ ਬਿਝੜੈ॥

The warriors excelling one another have fought and died;

ਨਰ ਇੱਕ ਅਨਿਕ ਸਸਤ੝ਰਣ ਭਿੜੈ ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਅਵਝੜ ਝੜੈ ॥੪੯੯॥

All the warriors are alike, but the weapons are many and these weapons are striking blows on the soldiers like rain.499.

ਇੱਕ ਜੂਝਿ ਭਟ ਗਿਰੈ ਇੱਕ ਬਬਕੰਤ ਮੱਧ ਰਣ ॥

On one side the warriors have fallen and on the other they are shouting;

ਇੱਕ ਦੇਵ ਪ੝ਰਿ ਬਸੈ ਇੱਕ ਭਜਿ ਚਲਤ ਖਾਇ ਬ੝ਰਣ ॥

On one side they have entered the city of gods and on the other, having been wounded, they have sped away;

ਇੱਕ ਜੂਝਿ ਉੱਝੜੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਛੜੇ ਝਾੜਿ ਅਸਿ॥

Some are fighting in the war firmly and on the other side they are falling down having been chopped like trees;

ਇੱਕ ਅਨਿਕ ਬ੝ਰਣ ਝਲੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਮ੝ਕਤੰਤ ਬਾਨ ਕਸਿ ॥

On one side many wounded are being endured and on the other the arrows are being discharged with full strength;

ਰਣ ਭੂਮਿ ਘੂਮਿ ਸਾਵੰਤ ਮੰਡੈ ਦੀਰਘ੝ ਕਾਇ ਲਛਮਣ ਪ੝ਰਬਲ ॥

Diraghkaya and Lakshman have wounded and created such a situation in the battlefield,

ਥਿਰ ਰਹੇ ਬ੝ਰਿਛ ਉਪਵਨ ਕਿਧੋ ਜਣ੝ ਉੱਤਰ ਦਿਸਿ ਦ੝ਝ ਅਚਲ ॥੫੦੦॥

As if they are large trees in a forest or eternal and immovable pole-stars in the north.500.

ਅਜਬਾ ਛੰਦ ॥

AJBA STANZA

ਜ੝ੱਟੇ ਬੀਰੰ ॥ ਛ੝ੱਟੇ ਤੀਰੰ ॥ ਢ੝ੱਕੀ ਢਾਲੰ ॥ ਕ੝ਰੋਹੇ ਕਾਲੰ ॥੫੦੧॥

The warriors fought, the arrows were discharged, there was knocking on the shields and the death-like warriors were infuriated.501.

ਢੰਕੇ ਢੋਲੰ ॥ ਬੰਕੇ ਬੋਲੰ ॥ ਕੱਛੇ ਸਸਤ੝ਰੰ ॥ ਅੱਛੇ ਅਸਤ੝ਰੰ ॥੫੦੨॥

The drums sounded, the blows of the swords were heard and the weapons and arrows were struck.502.

ਕ੝ਰੋਧੰ ਗਲਿਤੰ ॥ ਬੋਧੰ ਦਲਿਤੰ ॥ ਗਜੈ ਵੀਰੰ ॥ ਤਜੈ ਤੀਰੰ ॥੫੦੩॥

Highly infuriated and with great understanding, the forces are being mashed, the warriors are thundering and showering arrows.503.

ਰੱਤੇ ਨੈਣੰ ॥ ਮੱਤੇ ਬੈਣੰ ॥ ਲ੝ੱਝੈ ਸੂਰੰ ॥ ਸ੝ੱਝੈ ਹੂਰੰ ॥੫੦੪॥

The warriors with red eyes are shouting, having been intoxicated they are fighting and the heavenly damsels are looking at them.504.

ਲਗੈ ਤੀਰੰ ॥ ਭਗੈ ਵੀਰੰ ॥ ਰੋਸੰ ਰ੝ੱਝੈ ॥ ਅੱਸਤ੝ਰੰ ਜ੝ੱਝੈ ॥੫੦੫॥

Having been pierced by arrows, the warriors are fleeing and (some) are fighting with arms, being highly enraged.505.

ਝ੝ੱਮੇ ਸੂਰੰ ॥ ਘ੝ੱਮੇ ਹੂਰੰ ॥ ਚੱਕੈ ਚਾਰੰ ॥ ਬੱਕੈ ਮਾਰੰ ॥੫੦੬॥

The warriors are swinging and the heavenly damsels, while wandering, are looking at them and are wondering on listening to their shouts of "Kill, Kill".506.

ਭਿੱਦੇ ਬਰਮੰ ॥ ਛਿੱਦੇ ਚਰਮੰ ॥ ਤ੝ੱਟੈ ਖੱਗੰ ॥ ਉੱਠੈ ਅਗੰ ॥੫੦੭॥

The weapons, coming into contact with armours, are piercing the bodies; the spars are breaking and the sparks of fire are coming out from them.507.

ਨੱਚੇ ਤਾਜੀ ॥ ਗੱਜੇ ਗਾਜੀ ॥ ਡਿੱਗੇ ਵੀਰੰ ॥ ਤੱਜੇ ਤੀਰੰ ॥੫੦੮॥

The horses are dancing and the warriors are thundering; they are falling while discharging the arrows.508.

ਝ੝ੱਮੇ ਸੂਰੰ ॥ ਘ੝ੱਮੀ ਹੂਰੰ ॥ ਕੱਛੇ ਬਾਣੰ ॥ ਮੱਤੇ ਮਾਣੰ ॥੫੦੯॥

Seeing the heavenly damsels moving, the warriors are swinging and, being intoxicated, are discharging arrows.509.

ਪਾਧਰੀ ਛੰਦ ॥

PAADHARI STANZA

ਤਹ ਭਯੋ ਘੋਰ ਆਹਵ ਅਪਾਰ ॥ ਰਣ ਭੂਮਿ ਝੂਮਿ ਜ੝ੱਝੇ ਜ੝ਝਾਰ ॥

In this way, the war ensued and many warriors fell in the field;

ਇਤ ਰਾਮ ਭ੝ਰਾਤ ਅਤਕਾਇ ਉੱਤ ॥ ਰਿਸ ਜ੝ੱਝ ਉੱਝਰੇ ਰਾਜ ਪ੝ੱਤ ॥੫੧੦॥

On one side there is Lakshman, brother of Ram and on the other there is the demon Atkaaye and both these princes are fighting with each other.510.

ਤਬ ਰਾਮ ਭ੝ਰਾਤ ਅਤਿ ਕੀਨ ਰੋਸ ॥ ਜਿਮ ਪਰਤ ਅਗਨ ਘ੝ਰਿਤ ਕਰਤ ਜੋਸ ॥

Then Lakshman became highly infuriated and increased it with zeal like the fire blazing fiercely when the ghee is poured over it;

ਗਹਿ ਬਾਣ ਪਾਣਿ ਤਜੇ ਅਨੰਤ ॥ ਜਿਮ ਜੇਠ ਸੂਰ ਕਿਰਣੈ ਦ੝ਰੰਤ ॥੫੧੧॥

He discharged the scorching arrows like the terrible sunrays of eh month of Jyestha.511.

ਬ੝ਰਣ ਆਪ ਮੱਧ ਬਾਹਤ ਅਨੇਕ ॥ ਬਰਣੈ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਝਕ ਝਕ ॥

Getting himself wounded he discharged so many arrows which are indescribable;

ਉੱਝਰੇ ਵੀਰ ਜ੝ੱਝਣਿ ਜ੝ਝਾਰ ॥ ਜੈ ਸਬਦ ਦੇਵ ਭਾਖਤ ਪ੝ਕਾਰ ॥੫੧੨॥

These brave fighters are absorbed in fight and on the other hand, the gods are raising the sound of victory.512.

ਰਿਪ੝ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਸਸਤ੝ਰ ਅਸਤ੝ਰੰ ਬਿਹੀਨ ॥ ਬਹ੝ ਸਸਤ੝ਰ ਸਾਸਤ੝ਰ ਬਿੱਦਿਆ ਪ੝ਰਬੀਨ ॥

Ultimately Lakshman deprived Atkaaye, the specialist in many sciences of weapons and arms, of his weapons and arms;

ਹਯ ਮ੝ਕਟ ਸੂਤ ਬਿਨ੝ ਭਯੋ ਗਵਾਰ ॥ ਕਛ੝ ਚਪੇ ਚੋਰ ਜਿਮ ਬਲ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ॥੫੧੩॥

He was deprived of his horse, crown and garments and he tried ot conceal himself like a thief mustering his strength.513.

ਰਿਪ੝ ਹਣੇ ਬਾਣ ਬੱਜ੝ਰਵ ਘਾਤ ॥ ਸਪ ਚਲੇ ਕਾਲ ਕੀ ਜ੝ਆਲ ਤਾਤ ॥

He discharged arrows causing destruction like Indra`s Vajra and they were striking like the advancing fire of death;

ਤਬ ਕ੝ਪਿਯੋ ਵੀਰ ਅਤਿਕਾਇ ਝਸ ॥ ਜਨ ਪ੝ਰਲੈ ਕਾਲ ਕੋ ਮੇਘ ਜੈਸ ॥੫੧੪॥

The hero Atkaaye become highly infuriated like the clouds of doomsday.514.

ਇਮ ਕਰਨ ਲਾਗ ਲਪਟਂ ਲਬਾਰ ॥ ਜਿਮ ਜ੝ੱਬਣ ਹੀਣ ਲਪਟਾਇ ਨਾਰਿ ॥

He began to prattle like a man without the energy of a youth, clinging to a woman without satisfying her,

ਜਿਮ ਦੰਤ ਰਹਤ ਗਹਿ ਸ੝ਵਾਨ ਸਸਕ ॥ ਜਿਮ ਗਝ ਬੈਸ ਬਲ ਬੀਰਜ ਰਸਕ ॥੫੧੫॥

Or like a teethless dog on catching a rabbit whom he can do no harm, or like a libertine without the semen.515.

ਜਿਮ ਦਰਬ ਹੀਣ ਕਛ੝ ਕਰਿ ਬਪਾਰ ॥ ਜਣ ਸਸਤ੝ਰ ਹੀਣ ਰ੝ਝਿਯੋ ਜ੝ਝਾਰ ॥

Atkaaye was in such a situation which is experienced by a trader without money or a warriors without weapons.

ਜਿਮ ਰੂਪ ਹੀਣ ਬੇਸਯਾ ਪ੝ਰਭਾਵ ॥ ਜਣ ਬਾਜ ਹੀਣ ਰਥ ਕੋ ਚਲਾਵ ॥੫੧੬॥

He looked like and ugly prostitute or a chariot without horses.516.

ਤਬ ਤਮਕਿ ਤੇਗ ਲਛਮਣ ਉਦਾਰ ॥ ਤਹ ਹਣਿਯੋ ਸੀਸ ਕਿਨੋ ਦ੝ਫਾਰ ॥_

Then the benevolent Lakshman stuck his sharp-edged sword and chopped the demon into two halves.

ਤਬ ਗਿਰਿਯੋ ਬੀਰ ਅਤਿਕਾਇ ਝਕ ॥ ਲਖਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੂਰ ਭੱਜੇ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੫੧੭॥

That warriors named Atkaaye fell in the battlefield and on seeing him (falling) many warriors fled away.517.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੝ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੝ਰ ਨਾਟਕੇ ਰਾਮਵਤਾਰ ਅਤਕਾਇ ਬਧਹਿ ਧਿਆਇ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ॥੧੪॥
