There are speculations about the time when the Sikhs actually arrived in Kashmir. Walter Lawrence wrote, The Sikhs of Kashmir were probably Punjabi Brahmins who embraced Sikhism when the valley passed into the hands of Ranjit Singh, but the Sikhs of Trahal declare their ancestors came to Kashmir in the time of the Afghan rule.

There are two kinds of Sikh communities that exist in Kashmir- The Kashmiri Sikhs and the Punjabi Sikhs. Though their habits differ, they still manage to maintain the historical Gurudwaras in Kashmir.
