Punjab minister Capt. Kanwaljit Singh succumbed to injuries received when his Hundai was struck by two trucks. The 67 year old Kanwaljit Singh, the Senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal party in Punjab, was apparently seated to the left of his driver when it was struck in the side he was seated on.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Minister Kanwaljit Singh died on Sunday when the car in which he was travelling was hit by two trucks in Kharar near here.

The 67-year-old leader of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab and two other injured were first taken to civil hospital at Kharar from where he was rushed to PGIMER here in a critical condition, Mohali's Senior Superintendent of Police, J S Aulakh said.

"He was put on oxygen and his condition was quite serious," doctors at PGIMER said.

Kanwaljit, who represents Banur Assembly seat and is the Minister for Cooperation, was returning here from Ludhiana when his private car was first hit by a truck near the T-point in Kharar on Ropar road in Khanpur village.

"The car was hit by truck and it skidded. A second truck which was following the first one also crashed into the car which overturned," Kharar city's Station House Officer Dalbir Singh said.

As the model code of conduct was in force, Kanwaljit was using a private car and had only one pilot vehicle ahead of his car.

Kanwaljit was sitting on the front seat of the car while his driver Jasbir Singh was driving the vehicle. There was on more person sitting in the car's backseat.
