Gopal Tero Aarta is a Spiritual poetry of Devotee Dhanna present in Guru Granth Sahib. This Shabad is pretty example of humbleness and Satisfaction.

A Kid always tell his wishes to his father, but when kid becomes mad and over demanding everything, father always ignore him or slap him because of Greed, One of Vices. Devotees are sons of God. They call God their Father/Mother. Their all wishes are to god and god fulfill their wishes. When they ask worldly requirements they never show greed but demand in limit, not extending(Greed) and demanding those things which are actually required to balance themselves with nature. They never go against nature, same is present in this Shabad.

Etymology

  • Gopal: means God i.e Go + Pal (Earth + Nourish), who is sustainer of word.
  • Tero: is pronoun used with
  • Aarta : it means demander/beggar/wisher

Which means i am beggar of your's.

This line have synonym with some other lines of Guru Granth Sahib like . We are Beggers of god's house, God need worship and our aim should be to worship him and if demand should demand, not exceeding limits(Greed).

Veechar

Devotee Dhanna set an example, how to demand. Some people generally questions that one should not demand worldly things from god and gurmukh will never do so, so they criticize Dhanna's Bani. but this bani is actually stopping sikhs from unnecessary demands.

This Bani is telling in very beginning that,ਜੋ ਜਨ ਤ੝ਮਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਤਾ ॥੧॥, one who worship on god only their affairs are looked after by god(Worldly or Spiritually). Such people are very Humble and they ask for only those things which are actually required to live fruitful life.

Dhanna is asking for Dairy animals, which help in earning in his livelihood and demanding for Horse which help him to visit place when needed.
