Dasam Granth on Idol Worship
In Dasam Granth, Guru Gobind Singh wrote strictly against Idol Worship. Guru Gobind Singh vanquished the vicious hill chiefs, they were idol-worshippers and I am idol-breaker.(ਮਨਮ ਕਸ਼ਤਹਅਮ ਕੋਹਿਯਾਂ ਪਰਫਿਤਨ ॥ ਕਿ ਆਂ ਬਤ ਪਰਸਤੰਦ ਮਨ ਬਤਸ਼ਿਕਨ ॥੯੫॥)
In Shabad Hazarey:
ਕਹਾ ਭਯੋ ਜੋ ਅਤਿ ਹਿਤ ਚਿਤ ਕਰ ਬਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਿਲਾ ਪਜਾਈ ॥
ਪਰਾਨ ਥਕਿਓ ਪਾਹਨ ਕਹ ਪਰਸਤ ਕਛ ਕਰ ਸਿਧ ਨ ਆਈ॥1॥
ਅਛਤ ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਅਰਪਤ ਹੈ ਪਾਹਨ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਖੈਹੈ ॥
ਤਾ ਮੈਂ ਕਹਾਂ ਸਿਧਿ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਜੜ ਤੋਹਿ ਕਛੂ ਬਰ ਦੈਹੈ॥2॥
ਜੌ ਜੀਯ ਹੋਤ ਤੌ ਦੇਤ ਕਛ ਤਹਿ ਕਰ ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
ਕੇਵਲ ਝਕ ਸਰਣ ਸਆਮੀ ਬਿਨ ਯੌ ਨਹਿ ਕਤਹਿ ਉਧਾਰ॥3॥9॥
So what if you worshipped statues, monuments or pictures? Worshiping these, your soul has been tired (meaning you are close to death) but you have not found anything. You donate rice rice, you burn joss-stick, wick lamps or frankincense, you burn oil lamps and perform many other rituals but that statue does not get you anything because it has no life. You fool! What do you get out of performing these rituals? What can a stone give you? If this stone had life, then it would have been able to give you something. Think this over and start reciting God’s praises, then you will know the right path and you will know that without God, you cannot get away from this cycle of birth and death. :::::(Shabad Hazaray, Guru Gobind Singh Ji)
In Akal Ustat:
ਕਾਹੂ ਲੈ ਪਾਹਨ ਪੂਜ ਧਰਯੋ ਸਿਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਲੈ ਲਿੰਗ ਗਰੇ ਲਟਕਾਇਓ ॥
ਕਾਹੂ ਲਖਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਅਵਾਚੀ ਦਿਸਾ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਹੂ ਪਛਾਹ ਕੋ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਇਓ ॥
ਕੋਊ ਬਤਾਨ ਕੋ ਪੂਜਤ ਹੈ ਪਸ ਕੋਊ ਮਰਿਤਾਨ ਕੋ ਪੂਜਨ ਧਾਇਓ ॥
ਕੂਰ ਕਰਿਆ ਉਰਝਿਓ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਜਗ ਸਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਕੋ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ॥10॥
While worshipping stones some people are bowing before them and some others are withholding idols of stones in their necks. Some people have faith that God is in the south while others consider God is toward the west and they are bowing their heads in those directions. Some people are worshiping idols foolishly while others are adoring the dead. The whole world is busy in such false performances without knowing the secret mystery of God. In Bachittar Natak:
ਤਾਹਿ ਪਛਾਨਤ ਹੈ ਨ ਮਹਾ ਪਸ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਪਰਤਾਪ ਤਿਹੂੰ ਪਰ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
ਪੂਜਤ ਹੈ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੈ ਜਿਹ ਕੇ ਪਰਸੈ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਪਰਾਹੀ ॥
ਪਾਪ ਕਰੋ ਪਰਮਾਰਥ ਕੈ ਜਿਹ ਪਾਪਨ ਤੇ ਅਤਿ ਪਾਪ ਲਜਾਹੀ ॥
ਪਾਇ ਪਰੋ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੇ ਜੜ ਪਾਹਨ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੯੯॥
O foolish beast! You do not recognize Him, Whose Glory hath spread over all the three worlds. You worship the creatures of God, on account of which your future (in the yond) is lost. For self interest you do such sin that even then great sin is ashamed of that. O ignorant, fall at the feet of the Lord. God does not reside in these stones.

ਕਿਸੂ ਨ ਭੇਖ ਭੀਜ ਹੋਂ ॥ ਅਲੇਖ ਬੀਜ ਬੀਜ ਹੋਂ ॥੩੪॥
I do not feel pleased with any particular garb, I sow the seed of God`s Name.34.
ਪਖਾਣ ਪੂਜ ਹੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ॥ ਨ ਭੇਖ ਭੀਜ ਹੋ ਕਹੀਂ ॥
I do not worship stones, nor I have any liking for a particular guise.
ਪਾਇ ਪਰੋ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੇ ਜੜ ਪਾਹਨ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੯੯॥
O fool! Fall at the feet of Lord-God, the Lord is not within the stone-idols.99.
In 33 Swaiyey:
ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਪੂਜਤ ਪਾਹਨ ਕਉ ਕਛ ਪਾਹਨ ਮੈ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
ਤਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਪੂਜ ਪਰਭੂ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਜਿਹ ਪੂਜਤ ਹੀ ਅਘ ਓਘ ਮਿਟਾਹੀ ॥
ਆਧਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਜੇਤਕ ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਲੇਤ ਸਭੈ ਛਟਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
ਤਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਧਯਾਨ ਪਰਮਾਨ ਸਦਾ ਇਨ ਫੋਕਟ ਧਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਫਲ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨੦॥
Why do you worship stones? The Lord-God is not within those stones; you may only worship Him, whose adoration destroys clusters of sins; with the remembrance on the Name of the Lord, the ties of all suffering are removed; ever mediate on that Lord because the hollow religious will not bear any fruit.

ਫੋਕਟ ਧਰਮ ਭਯੋ ਫਲ ਹੀਨ ਜ ਪੂਜ ਸਿਲਾ ਜਗਿ ਕੋਟ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
ਸਿੱਧ ਕਹਾ ਸਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਸੇ ਬਲ ਬਰਿੱਧ ਘਟੀ ਨਵਨਿੱਧ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
ਆਜ ਹੀ ਆਜ ਸਮੋ ਜ ਬਿਤਯੋ ਨਹਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਰਯੋ ਕਛ ਲਾਜ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
ਸਰੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਜਯੋ ਨ ਅਰੇ ਜੜ ਝਸੇ ਹੀ ਝਸ ਸ ਬੈਸ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੨੧॥
The hollow religion became fruitless and O being ! you have lost millions of years by worshipping the stones; you will not get power with the worship of stones; the strength and glory will only decrease; In this way, the time was lost uselessly and nothing was achieved and you were not ashamed; O foolish intellect! You have not remembered the Lord and have wasted your life in vain. :::::(33 Swayeas, Guru Gobind Singh Ji)
ਪਾਹਨ ਕੋ ਅਸਥਾਲਯ ਕੋ ਸਿਰ ਨਯਾਇ ਫਿਰਯੋ ਕਛ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਆਯੋ ॥ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੂੜ ਅਗੂੜ ਪਰਭੂ ਤਜਿ ਆਪਨ ਹੂੜ ਕਹਾ ਉਰਝਾਯੋ ॥੨੬॥
You had been wandering with bowed head in the temples of stones, hut you realized nothing; O foolish mind ! you were only entangled in your bad intellect abandoning that Effulgent Lord.26.

ਭੰਜਨ ਗੜਹਨ ਸਮਰਥ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਭ ਜਾਨਤ ਹੈ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
He is always the Destroyer, the Creator and the Almighty; he the Creator is Omniscient…..Pause.
ਕਹਾ ਭਇਓ ਜੋ ਅਤਿ ਹਿਤ ਚਿਤ ਕਰ ਬਹਬਿਧਿ ਸਿਲਾ ਪਜਾਈ ॥
Of what use is the worship of the stones with devotion and sincerity in various ways?

Zafarnama
ਮਨਮ ਕਸ਼ਤਨਮ ਕੋਹੀਯਾਂ ਬਤ ਪਰਸਤ ॥
ਕਿ ਓ ਬਤ ਪਰਸਤੰਦ ਮਨ ਬਤ ਸ਼ਿਕਸਤ ॥95॥
I have killed the hill Rajas (kings) who were bent on mischief. They were stone idol worshippers, I am the breaker of idols and I worship the one Lord.

ਸੋਰਠ ॥
ਤਾਸ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਪਛਾਨਹੀ ਜੋ ਹੋਹਿ ਹੈ ਅਬ ਹੈ ॥ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਕਾਹੇ ਭਜਤ ਪਾਹਨ ਤੋਹਿ ਕਛ ਫਲਿ ਦੈ ॥
Why do you not pray to Him, who will be there in future and who is there in the present? You are worshipping the stones uselessly; what will you gain by that worship?
ਤਾਸ ਸੇਵਹ ਜਾਸ ਸੇਵਤਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਪੂਰਣ ਕਾਮ ॥ ਹੋਹਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਕਲ ਪੂਰਣ ਲੈਤ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥੧੧॥੮੫॥
Only worship Him who will fulfil your wishes; mediate on that Name, which will fulfil your wishes.11.85.

ਪਾਹਨ ਪਜੈ ਹੈ ਝਕ ਨ ਧਿਝ ਹੈ ਮਤ ਕੇ ਅਧਕ ਅਧੇਰਾ ॥ ਅੰਮਰਿਤ ਕਹ ਤਜਿ ਹੈ ਬਿਖ ਕਹ ਭਜਿ ਹੈ ਸਾਝਹਿ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਵੈਰਾ ॥
Worshipping the stones, they will not meditate on the one Lord; there will be prevalent the darkness of many sects; they will desire for poison, leaving the embrosia, they will name the evening time as early-morn;
ਫੋਕਟ ਧਰਮਣਿ ਰਤਿ ਕਕਰਿਤ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਤ ਕਹੋ ਕਹਾ ਫਲ ਪੈ ਹੈ ॥ ਬਾਂਧੇ ਮਰਿਤਸਾਲੈ ਜਾਹਿ ਉਤਾਲੈ ਅੰਧ ਅਧੋਗਤਿ ਜੈ ਹੈ ॥੭੧॥
Absorbing themselves in all the hollow religions, they will perform evil deeds and reap the reward accordingly; they will be tied and despatched to the abode of death, where they will receive the suitable punishment.71. (Page 1143)

ਜਹ ਤਹ ਕਰਨ ਲਗੇ ਸਭ ਪਾਪਨ ॥ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਤਜਿ ਕਰ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਨ ॥ ਪਾਹਨ ਕਉ ਸ ਕਰਤ ਸਭ ਬੰਦਨ ॥ ਡਾਰਤ ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਸਿਰ ਚੰਦਨ ॥੭੯॥
Here and there all will leave the religious injunctions and the remembrance of the Name of the Lord and perform the sinful acts; the stone-idols will be worshipped and only on them incense. Lamp-lights and sandal will be offered.79.
ਜਹ ਤਹ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਤਜ ਭਾਗਤ ॥ ਉਠ ਉਠ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਸੌ ਲਾਗਤ ॥ ਜਹ ਤਹ ਭਈ ਧਰਮ ਗਤ ਲੋਪੰ ॥ ਪਾਪਹ ਲਗੀ ਚਉਗਨੀ ਓਪੰ ॥੮੦॥
Here and there, forsaking the religious injunction, people will run away; they will be absorbed in sinful acts; no religion will remain visible and the sin will become fourfold.80.
