ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ 1 ॥

ਮਨਹ੝ ਨ ਨਾਮ੝ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਧਿਆਈਝ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਤਿਵੈ ਸ੝ਖ੝ ਪਾਈਝ ॥1॥

ਮੈ ਅੰਧ੝ਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ੝ ਲਕ੝ਟੀ ਟੋਹਣੀ ॥ ਰਹਉ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਨ ਮੋਹੈ ਮੋਹਣੀ ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਗ੝ਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਾਲਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥2॥

ਸੇਵੀ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ ਭਾਇ ਨਾਮ੝ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ॥ ਤ੝ਧ੝ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਰਜਾਇ ਭਰਮ੝ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨਾ ॥3॥

ਜਨਮਤ ਹੀ ਦ੝ਖ੝ ਲਾਗੈ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥ ਜਨਮ੝ ਮਰਣ੝ ਪਰਵਾਣ੝ ਹਰਿ ਗ੝ਣ ਗਾਇ ਕੈ ॥4॥

ਹਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੂ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤ੝ਧ ਹੀ ਸਾਜਿਆ ॥ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਿਆ ॥5॥

ਦੇਹੀ ਭਸਮ ਰ੝ਲਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਪੀ ਕਹ ਗਇਆ॥ ਆਪੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ੝ ਭਇਆ ॥6॥

ਤੂੰ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੝ਰਭ ਦੂਰਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਭ ਤੂ ਹੈ ॥ਗ੝ਰਮ੝ਖਿ ਵੇਖਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭੀ ਤੂ ਹੈ ॥7॥

ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸ੝ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ॥ ਗ੝ਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ੝ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ੝ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥8॥3॥5॥

ਪਦਅਰਥ: ਮਨਹ੝—ਮਨ ਤੋਂ। ਅਹਿ—ਦਿਨ। ਨਿਸਿ—ਰਾਤ। ਰਾਖਹਿ—(ਹੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਰੱਖੇਂ। ਧਾਰਿ—ਧਾਰ ਕੇ, ਕਰ ਕੇ।੧।

ਲਕ੝ਟੀ—ਛੋਟੀ ਲੱਕੜੀ, ਡੰਗੋਰੀ, ਸੋਟੀ। ਟੋਹਣੀ—ਆਸਰਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਡੰਗੋਰੀ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਟੋਹ ਟੋਹ ਕੇ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕੇ)। ਰਹਉ—ਮੈਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਟੇਕ—ਆਸਰਾ। ਮੋਹਣੀ—ਮੋਹ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੀ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਜਹ—ਜਿਧਰ, ਜਿਥੇ। ਦੇਖਉ—ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਗ੝ਰਿ—ਗ੝ਰੂ ਨੇ। ਭਾਲਿ—ਢੂੰਢ ਕੇ। ਸਬਦਿ—(ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ। ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ—ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।੨।

ਸੇਵੀ—ਮੈਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਸਿਮਰਾਂ। ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰ ਭਾਇ—ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੇ ਅਨ੝ਸਾਰ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ। ਭੰਜਨਾ—ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ।੩।

ਜਨਮਤ ਹੀ—ਜੰਮਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ। ਮਰਣਾ—ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ। ਆਇ ਕੈ—(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆ ਕੇ। ਜਨਮ੝ ਮਰਣ੝—ਜਨਮ ਤੋਂ ਮਰਨ ਤਕ (ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ)।੪।

ਹਉ—ਮੈਂ। ਤ੝ਧ ਹੀ—ਤੂੰ ਹੀ। ਥਾਪਿ—ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ। ਉਥਾਪਿ—ਉਥਾਪੇ, ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਿਵਾਜਿਆ—ਆਦਰ—ਮਾਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ।੫।

ਦੇਹੀ—ਸਰੀਰ। ਭਸਮ—ਸ੝ਆਹ, ਮਿੱਟੀ। ਰ੝ਲਾਇ—ਰ੝ਲਾ ਕੇ, ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ। ਕਹ—ਕਿਥੇ? ਵਿਸਮਾਦ੝—ਹੈਰਾਨੀ, ਅਸਚਰਜਤਾ।੬।

ਹਦੂਰਿ—ਅੰਗ—ਸੰਗ, (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਹਾਜ਼ਰ।੭।

ਮੈ—ਮੈਨੂੰ, ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ। ਦੇਇ—ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੮।

ਅਰਥ: ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੝ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਡੰਗੋਰੀ (ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਦੇਂਦਾ) ਹੈ, (ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ) ਟੋਹਣੀ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਟੋਹ ਟੋਹ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹਾਂ)। (ਜਦੋਂ) ਮੈਂ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

(ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਭ੝ਲਾ। ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਝ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੝ਰਾਪਤ ਹ੝ੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।

(ਹੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਧਰ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਧਰ ਹੀ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ। ਬਾਹਰ ਲੱਭ ਲੱਭ ਕੇ ਹ੝ਣ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।੨।

ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ! ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੇ ਅਨ੝ਸਾਰ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਹੇ ਭਰਮ ਤੇ ਭਉ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ! ਜੋ ਕ੝ਝ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੈਂ ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੩।

(ਜੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਦੇਈਝ ਤਾਂ) ਜੰਮਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦ੝ੱਖ ਆ ਵਾਪਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗ੝ਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੪।

ਹੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਨਿਵਾਜਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੂੰ (ਪਰਗਟ) ਹ੝ੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ 'ਹਉਮੈ' ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ।੫।

ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰ੝ਲਾ ਕੇ, ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ, ਕਿੱਥੇ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਚਰਜ ਕੌਤਕ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਪਰ ਹੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ।੬।

ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨ੝ੱਖ ਗ੝ਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਹੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ (ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈਂ, ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ, ਅੰਦਰ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ (ਬਾਹਰ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ) ਤੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ-ਨਾਜ਼ਰ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ।੭।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ-ਹੇ ਪ੝ਰਭੂ!) ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ। (ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗ੝ਰੂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਦਾਸ (ਤੇਰੇ) ਗ੝ਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੮।੩।੫।

Soohee, First Mehla:

Never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, from your mind; night and day, meditate on it. As You keep me, in Your Merciful Grace, so do I find peace. ||1||

I am blind, and the Lord's Name is my cane. I remain under the Sheltering Support of my Lord and Master; I am not enticed by Maya the enticer. ||1||Pause||

Wherever I look, there the Guru has shown me that God is always with me. Searching inwardly and outwardly as well, I came to see Him, through the Word of the Shabad. ||2||

So serve the True Guru with love, through the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. As it pleases You, so by Your Will, You destroy my doubts and fears. ||3||

At the very moment of birth, he is afflicted with pain, and in the end, he comes only to die. Birth and death are validated and approved, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||

When there is no ego, there You are; You fashioned all of this. You Yourself establish and disestablish; through the Word of Your Shabad, You elevate and exalt. ||5||

When the body rolls in the dust, it is not known where the soul has gone. He Himself is permeating and pervading; this is wonderful and amazing! ||6||

You are not far away, God; You know everything. The Gurmukh sees You ever-present; You are deep within the nucleus of our inner self. ||7||

Please, bless me with a home in Your Name; may my inner self be at peace. May slave Nanak sing Your Glorious Praises; O True Guru, please share the Teachings with me. ||8||3||5||
